Something doesnt sit quite right as I'm thinking about this Nature's Rest or Latex Foam (or at least the cheap PU variety) offered by the S companies. As has been stated multiple times, the consensus is that Latex International makes the best Talalay latex foam. Many people, including myself, feel that 100% botanically grown natural is the best latex.

In about a week or so...

Hi there,

I've read through your entire post a few times, and you sound exactly like me.  I'm not a big guy, but I am a big girl :) and I too started out dazed and confused by this mattress business.  The last time I bought a mattress for myself was 15 years ago, my husband and I walked in a showroom, lay on one we liked, bought it for $800, and it was amazingly comfortable and lasted 15 years.  That was a Simmons that was made with quality materials (wool, not cheap PU foam).

Then I got a rude awakening a few years ago when I replaced my daughter's mattress with an $800 Simmons that cratered after less than a year.

When I started researching mattresses a few month ago, I soon found that none of the "S" brands make a quality product anymore.  They are all made with cheap PU foam...

The short answer is, the best latex mattress is a 100% latex mattress - not one that is layered with other PU foam.  You will not find this in any of the major "S" brand manufactured latex mattresses - they ALL have a relatively small layer of latex sandwiched between layers of PU foam.  The *possible* exception to this is the top of the line Vera Wang mattress, which one salesman told me was 100% latex - but I haven't independently confirmed this.  You get a 100% latex mattress by going to a company like sleeplikeabear, flobeds, sleepez, or saavyrest.

Latex comes processed by two methods - Dunlop and Talalay.  Dunlop was the first method developed over 50 years ago.  The Talalay method is more recently developed, it is a more complicated, and more expensive manufacturing process that produces a more uniform and consistent latex.  The two types have a slightly...

Hi there,

I would look into a Tempurpedic or a latex bed.  You can go right onto the Tempurpedic website to read about them, but personally I wouldn't go for anything lower than a Rhapsody.

Or, you could look into a latex bed.  Latex beds are made from rubber sap taken from a rubber tree (much like maple syrup from a maple tree).

Latex and memory foam (tempurpedic) products have what is called an open cell construction.  This means that when pressure is put on the bed, the air whooshes out of those cells and into adjoining cells.  What this means is that when you lie on the bed, the latex or memory foam will conform to your body, providing pressure relief, which I am sure your current bed does not.

As to latex vs. memory foam, both are great products that have a different feel.

With memory foam, when you press your...

I think Savvy Rest charges shipping both ways (as opposed to only 1-way like FloBeds does) AND, they don't vacuum pack the latex, so boxes are twice as large. Also dunlap is a bit heavier than talalay (the natural in each type; don't know anything about the blended). Hence the higher shipping charges.

I have slept on both all natural dunlap and talalay (however not a bed with both), and they do feel quite different (even if ILDs are the same). Unfortunately I did not have 2 beds side by side to try when I was researching, nor were my past dunlap mattresses comparable in depth or ocnfiguration to my current talalay one. And except for my last bed, which was very thin dunlap, the others, albeit much thicker, were literally decades ago (eg: I had a Sears dunlap mattress through childhood, and then another dunlap one, don't know what brand,...

Hi Linda!
I enjoyed reading your comments and hearing of your personal experience with sleeping on one of the old Sears dunlop mattresses!

Your points about Savvy's shipping were well expressed and make sense. I'd forgotten that dunlop weighs more than Talalay, and if they are charging both ways, then $86 for a twin xl makes sense!
Yes, Savvy doesn't compress their latex, so boxes are larger too. Perfect logic all around - you go girl!

While I sure understand the concern about Savvy's "no returns - exchanges only" policy, the reason I went with them is that I was 100% certain that we wanted latex, and knowing that they offer both Talalay and Dunlop (both 100% natural), almost made it impossible for us to go with anyone else.... I knew I wouldn't be returning, and had the option to go to Talalay if the Dunlop proved to be too firm, but...

Catlover: I really appreciated all the work you went to in posting your pictures.

It sure would be wonderful if you had an opportunity to sleep on an all Talalay bed of the proper firmness. Then you could give us your evaluation of the two different latex manufacturing processes as far as actual use is concerned.

Without ever having slept on a Dunlop mattress I naturally can only assume what you are experiencing compared to what I am experiencing with my all Talalay FlowBeds. It has always been my assumption that since Dunlop is a more dense product that it has a different feel because of this. At least that was my conclusion based on the samples that I received both from Savvy Rest ( Dunlop) and FlowBeds ( Talalay). As you indicated, with the small samples of Dunlop they felt less springy. This was a great concern...

I am giving it some time.  My back problems are severe, and I don't expect them to be solved overnight by a new mattress :)

Having said that, last night was comfortable and I woke up practically pain free, which is a huge improvement.

Husband said again this morning (as he has every morning) that he loves the new Flobed mattress.

I'm not sure about the firmness level.  I am heavy, and I'm concerned that if I got a softer layer I'd start sinking into it and body wouldn't be in alignment.  I think if anything I would order a firm layer and switch out one of the xfirm layers.  But I'm going to give it a good week before I decide on trying a different layer.

Hi Kimberly!
