Re: Flobeds question - eagle2

Kimberly: I'm glad to hear you found the proper firmness for you. I can appreciate your position as I am rapidly nearing the end of my 90 day period as well, and still trying to find that ideal comfort level. As far as "Unoriginal" goes, I understand. At first I thought that I would need softer material as well. I am finding out that the exact opposite is true. The thing we need to think about is not the initial feel of laying on the mattress. Most people like the feel of a soft surface. The need for support only becomes apparent after you have lain on the mattress for a period of time( within about one hour for me,depending on several factors) a too soft surface will loses its appeal because the support just is not there.

I must confess that I still wonder about Dunlop processed hundred percent natural...

What's this fourth layer you're having shipped out?

Kimberly, I am having FloBeds shipped me a 100% natural firm piece of latex. This will take the place of the blended piece of firm latex that they had recently shipped to me.

As you may recall I had this shipped as an experiment. This was due to the fact that it is so hard to find information comparing blended to natural by someone who is not selling it but actually sleeping on it.

My medium piece of natural is on the lower end of the ILD range. It is 26.2 ILD. But the firm piece of blended actually felt quite similar to my medium piece of natural. The surface tension of the blended felt a little firmer, but as I laid on it the more dense material in the natural made them feel very similar after laying on them for...

Hi. I bought two 1" talalay latex toppers from Foam by Mail and they feel great, but they smell horrible. It was oppressive. I put them outside for a week to air out, and at the end of the week I could smell them from 10 feet away. I decided to leave them out through the rain and let them dry out. The smell is still oppressive. I bought them in early summer, about June, and it still smells so bad I don't want to use them. Did I get a bad apple, or do all latex toppers smell? Should I buy some new ones from someone else?

As Kimberly has indicated, she and I both have latex from FloBeds who does business exclusively with Latex International.

Her bed is made out of blended latex. Mine is made out of 100% botanically grown natural latex. I recently acquired...

If you are interested in researching a good quality, latex mattress, then start with these websites:

Flobeds
Sleepez
Saavyrest
sleeplikeabear

I would also visit the website of Latex International, the US's major latex foam manufacturer, which is generally acknowledged to make the best quality of Talalay processed latex.

I have a 100% latex bed and I like it a lot.  It's quite a different feel from a traditional spring mattress.  My bed is firm, but with enough give to eliminate pressure points.  I also have terrible back issues.  Before I bought my bed it was hard to sleep through the pain at night.  Now I'm getting a great night's sleep, not *every* night is totally pain free, but most nights are and I'm not in the agony I once was.

I don't know what size bed you're thinking of, but a good quality queen latex bed is going to run you in the neighborhood of $2k -...

Hi Elaine, I have a lot of muscle, nerve and joint pain as well as back problems, so need a very supportive mattress but with soft on top in order to relieve pressure points (side sleeper). I ended up going with Flobeds who were great to deal with. I got 100% natural talalay latex (they don't carry dunlop or I probably would have gotten that for the lower layer at least as it's denser and perhaps more supportive). If you look through my past threads as well as those of others (Eagle and Kimberly have both posted their experiences with talalay latex in terms of their back issues, and others such as Catlover have posted positive experiences with dunlop from Savvyrest). And there are of course many other informative posts. Seems like a few people, such as Jim (known for his mattress surgery...

Hi Matt,

If they won't help with an exchange or return, here are a couple of things you might want to try:

1. Encase the pieces in a good allergy mattress protector. That will seal in the smell as much as possible. If you could stand to sleep on plastic, you could first wrap them in light plastic which would more efficiently seal in the smell, then cover with an allergy zip-around cover. And then as someone else suggested, cover with your bedding on top, perhaps even several layers, such as a heavy mattress pad (and maybe some kind of mattress topper) and then more than one sheet.  The more between you and the smell, the better I would think.

2.  Note: this one is experimental and rather extreme, and I don't know if it will hurt the latex, but if you find you absolutely cannot use the pieces anyway and are willing...

Hi Eagle, I know form experience that the density makes quite a difference (in addition to the ILD rating), hence the reason why dunlap rated at the same ILD as natural talalay will feel much firmer (in my experience). I wonder also about one other factor in your "experiment", that is, do you know the exact ILDs of the 2 pieces you are comparing? I know Flobeds tries to aim right in the middle of the range for each firmness (e.g. 28 for med and 32 for firm); however, if you got a piece of firm that was on the lower range of 30-34 and a piece of medium on the higher range of 26-30, they could effectively have very close to the same ILD. Some of the pieces from that this might be a factor as well as the difference in density. I'm still...

Just what I dont want to have to do, more hassle, ignore me as I am beginning to suffer actual depression over waking up in extreme pain every morning while laying on a $4,000 mattress

OK, now, the first thing I see on flobeds sight is I have to choose between

Latex Mattress/Talalay/V Zone/Natural Vzone

What?

(I will have more questions, I know I can ask Flobeds but I want unbiased opinions if possible)

Which one do I choose?  Why would I choose this over that?

also, for those of you who have had latex beds during warm times of the year, doesnt the bed react to that and dont they sleep warm?

I believe sleepez.com has 100% natural talalay toppers.  Might only come in 3".  Not sure who makes them, so you should call them.  Latex international seems to have a good reputation for quality.  It might be made by them.

Sleeplikeabear.com has various inches and ILDS, but only in blended Talatech and Celsion.

If you call some of the places, they may be able to order what you want even if they don't normally stock it.  Try flobeds, sleepez, or sleeplikeabear.

A number of people have complained about the foambymail latex.   They also have questioned the accuracy of the product description.

Good luck.  Sorry to hear you have had so many problems.

from sleepez.com website:

"Only the finest latex is used for our latex mattresses and latex mattress toppers. Our suppliers are the largest and most respected in the world: Latexo, Latex International, Dunlopillo, Radium, and Latex Green. We give you a choice of blended talalay, Dunlop...

Interesting.  Just one more variable to have to deal with.  It is hard to say if that will always apply, due to the differences in batches.  However, all natural talalay may be somewhere in between blended talalay and dunlop in terms of inherent firmness.

I seem to keep switching to firmer on mine because of a sense of sinking in too far.  Last night I used XF on the top 2 layers over firm.  However, I had 1" of extra Celsion as well.  ...
