Re: airing out latex? - cloud9

L.I. makes an excellent  product (Talatech) but that smell they infuse the latex with is really awful. After six weeks I returned the mattress but the smell lingered on. I had to wash my down comforter and air out my feather and down pillows to remove the odor that had permeated everything. For months after I would walk in the house and catch a whiff of that creme brulee smell of L.I. latex. It really turned my stomach. They really ought to tone it down or offer an unscented version for those of us who prefer a fragrance neutral environment.

Different manufacturers may introduce some kind of artificial scent in a latex product to disguise the faint rubber smell it has naturally. I bought a Natura latex topper which was made by Dunlopillo, and happily it had no artificial smell added. Whether the latex you order will have any nasty odor...

And just when I'd almost decided to go ahead and try the Sensus topper....  Hrmph. (But maybe the Sensus is better made and will last longer than your memory foam topper?)

My reasoning was that if I want to try another layer of Talatech in a few months, SleepLikeaBear will mostly likely still be around. But if I want to try the 1" Sensus topper from Overstock in a few months, it might be gone. And I woke up this morning with both hands asleep, so that makes me more inclined to try an additional layer of topper now.

Not sure how much any topper is going to help with the hands, though -- I've been up for a couple hours, and they're still falling asleep....

I was just wondering... seems like a lot of folks (think most have been side sleepers?) have said that something works for their hips, but not their shoulders, or vice versa.  So I was wondering if anyone's ever tried to make "zones" with different ILDs (or maybe even with memory foam vs latex)?  ...  In other words, just for example in your case, Catherine, cut the top third of your 1" 24 ILD latex topper off (where your shoulders and head would go), and (after having bought another 1" topper in something softer...) do the same thing - cut a third of it off, and put it in place where the 1/3 24 ILD topper was removed, if that makes sense?

Zoning probably works for some people, but I'd like to avoid that. For one thing, I don't think I could bring myself to slice up something...

I need good lower back support, but I crave that "pillow top" feel, so I'm uncertain as to how to best approach this issue. I've had memory foam toppers in the past and loved them, so I thought I might do well with either 2" of Sensus foam, or a layer of "cushion firm" latex and 1" of either Sensus memory foam or 1" of soft latex. I'm a side sleeper, so I don't know if a 2" comfort layer will be enough, but I'm more than willing to start with that and go from there.

So what do you think? 2" of Sensus, or a latex/Sensus combo, or a medium latex/soft latex combo? A combo I haven't thought of? I'm going for softness *and* support here, which I know is a tricky combination to pull off.

I received my Talatech topper (1") from SleepLikeABear yesterday afternoon, and am airing it out. The latex smell is not strong or offensive, but I figured that I might as well air the topper out for a day. I'll probably put it on the bed tonight.

Everyone is posting about how their foam-on-top-of-coil mattresses crap out with permanent depressions after anywhere from a few months to a year.  I'm wondering what people's experience is with the longevity of the latex mattresses?  I'm about to spring for a 10" latex mattress set (yes, all latex) but it's about $2.5k, and I'm worried I'm going to end up with the same problem.  That's a lot of money to lay out to end up with back-wrenching body depressions.

For the record, I am going with the Custom Comfort Mattress Company (local company in Orange County, CA) latex mattress, they use LI blended Talalay latex (Talatech), there will be a six inch firmer core with 2" softer latex on the top and on the bottom (because their mattresses are two sided).

Has anyone here had a latex mattress for a significant length of time (say 3-5 years) and...

I too am suffering from horrible back pain and have been researching latex mattresses.  I would look at several websites and read what everybody says about:

1.  Dunlop vs. Talalay latex - some people seem to prefer one kind or the other.  The short story is that Dunlop seems to be stiffer, have fewer ILD options, and is less consistent, and may break down sooner.  Dunlop is manufactured in Sri Lanka, if I remember correctly.

This site has some good information about the manufacturing methods and some nice video to watch:

http://www.latexmattresscompany.com/

2.  All "natural" Talalay latex vs. blended Talalay latex - blended being a combination of natural latex rubber from a rubber tree and synthetic latex, which is chemically identical to natural latex.  Again, you will hear differences of opinion with some feeling that all natural is the best latex, and others saying that blended Talalay has a more consistent structure and more...

Well I said in my post that they use Talatech latex from LI - talatech is a blend of natural and synthetic latex.  I agree with you about the confusion over latex - both the processing method and the type of latex used - natural, synthetic or blend.

There is actually no hard data about one form of latex being more durable than another.  Everything every website says is pure assertion.  After reading, and reading, and reading, I've actually come to a different conclusion than you and feel that I have a better chance at a more durable product if I use blended Talalay latex - the idea being that the blend is a more uniform product than "100% natural organic."

I think all anyone can do is read up on the manufacturing processes, the pros and cons of 100% natural latex vs. 100% synthetic latex vs a blended latex and...

I got a one-inch Talatech 24 ILD topper from SleepLikeaBear.com and the latex odor (something like vanilla, but it's not really vanilla) was strong when I unwrapped it. Very nice quality foam, good price and great service.

I aired it out in the back of my car (a hatchback) for three days, took a couple drives with the windows wide open. Sunlight came in but the UV portion was filtered out by the hatch window. This helped some, and, hoping the rest of the odor would gradually disappear, I put it on top of my 3" dunlop medium-firm latex pad (a clearance item from foamsweetfoam.com which had no smell at all) to complete my DIY latex/spring hybrid king bed.

A month later the odor remains, doesn't seem to have dissipated any more. I've aired it out a couple more times. In fact the odor permeates my down pillow, and I...
