This site is godsend. There are so many posters here giving good info.

But I would like to go to a retail location and try sleeping on a talalay/dunlop mattress.

Are there any retailers that carry 100% latex mattresses in dallas or ft worth locations? These are the only 2 big cities that I can drive to.

Well I can drive to Austin also if it comes to that.

Thank you folks.

Stearns and Foster makes some all latex mattresses though they are not widely available.

You may want to call S&F and ask them if any retailers in your area carry their all latex mattresses. When I say "all latex" I mean that one model they sell here in...

Jimsocal,  Congratulations on getting what works for you!  I found that the closest I got to the firm platform surface, the firmer my bed was.  I wanted a fatter mattress than just two layers due to my 6 foot tall headboard.  I had not had a pretty headboard since I was a child and I wanted this when I finally bought myself a solid Maple bedroom set.

I love my three layer latex mattress but I had to put a Super Firm Latex on both sides in order to make the bed firm enough for me.  If I had only two layers before my 1" topper (need the topper for some cushion for my pressure points), My configuration of two X-Firm layers over the Super Firm layer may have changed.  One one of my sides,...

Re: European mattresses are not discussed here...why? Any users...feedback? - jimsocal

I think no one talks about them because no one knows about them or owns one.

I live in a big city and have never run across any European mattresses here. They probably exist here but I'm just saying, they're not very common. I don't doubt that there are better mattresses made in Europe than in the USA. Here, only a few very expensive high end make "advanced" and quality mattresses. The rest are just mass-produced. We do have a lot in the way of latex mattresses though. Stearns and Foster makes a synthetic latex which is zoned and is included in some of their upper echelon mattresses. Or is it Simmons? One or the other does this. Simmons also has some mattresses with an extra layer of visco foam across the lumbar region and now even Sealy is doing somethng similar with a reinforced lumbar region.

Hi,

If you can give us the coil count and specs or more info we might be able to tell you more about your Simmons mattress. First of all, what size? Queen or Full or ?

I may be wrong but I think Simmons' line is "Classic" then "Anniversary" then "World Class". But I'm not sure if that transfers from store to store or not. Also I was doing some shopping myself and I know they are coming out with new ones this month. If you are buying an older model you should be able to get a cut-rate deal.

Yes, by all means ask for and get free delivery.

170 lb should be okay for most mattresses, that's not that much. When you generally have problems is when one is over 200 lb.

Basically you get what you pay...

Double tempered sounds a little gimmicky for pocket coils...technically you can only temper steel once.  Sometimes interactive coils are listed as double tempered as the coils are tempered individually and then the whole innerspring system gets baked later on so that the helical wires and border wires, etc, can all be tempered as well.  Higher gauge technically means thinner wire...perhaps they meant lower gauge but did not articulate this correctly.  And I find it incredibly hard to believe that the coils are actually nested by hand if there is a foam encased edge.  I would ask them how their coils are held together.  If the fabric pockets themselves are glued together one to the next...then it isn't hand nested.

I tried doing some searching Jim and I couldn't find anything.  Only a review on this website (or thread rather) and...

I agree with everything Budgy said. The flobeds software must be broken, you certainly do not want XFirm layers.

You really should call Flobeds and talk with them about your situation. You can get all the info you need in just a few minutes and there is no obligation to buy.

Many of the questions you are asking are impossible to answer. Only you can know whether you need this or that later, all anyone else can do is guess.

There is no certifiable research that shows that Natural Talalay is better than synthetic talalay to my knowledge, especially when comparing LI's talatech to natural talalay. I agree with Budgy, if the synthetic is a lot cheaper and if money is an issue you may want to go with that, that would be my preference. But then again I have not really tried or...

If they're willing to trade up, why not trade up to something else? Most Sealys have a side - to - side connected coil pattern which leads to a lot of transfer of motion and not very good support imho.

I'd trade up to a Stearns and Foster pocket coil or Dunlop latex model, or a Simmons high end, or ??? something other than Sealy. S&F is made by Sealy but I'd take their pocket coils over a Sealy continuous spring design.

Hey, thanks for the report Budgy.

I suspected that the mattress guy I talked to wasn't telling the whole truth when he claimed that he had not heard that the springs migrating was an issue. Either that or he was just so new he hasn't heard all the things we've heard! He seemed knowledgeable yet when he said that he had never heard migration being a problem I got the feeling he was either green or lying.

On that note, what do you think of the Stearns and Foster intellicoils (are they included in your comments above re the cheap material encasing them?), and have you heard anything about the Stearns and Foster beds (here called Golden Elegance and Silver Dream) that use a bit of latex and intellicoil springs, joma wool, horsehair, cahsmere, etc... My guess would be that...

Hi Budgy, I got this from the Ortho web site but as with most mattress co's they don't go into great detail about things:

But here's my question for you:

Out of Stearns & Foster and Simmons which do you think is the better coil design?

S&F's higher end uses an Intellicoil design (spring within spring, the spring in the center is a light gauge spring and the outer spring is heavier gauge.) Intuitively this looks like a great design but ?? Do you have any feedback or experience on it?

Simmons' higher end has 2 options: Either a higher coil count of up to 1000 and/or a dual coil system with a lighter gauge indiv....

I can't say for sure on the new top of the line Stearns and Fosters as they are not currently bringing in that kind of spec into Canada.  I suspect you are right regarding the upholstery...its still probably a decent bit of polyfoam, some blended latex and a mishmash of polyester fibre blended with low grade horsehair and cashmere. The coil-in-coil system also seems gimmicky, a properly designed coil can use progressive spring rates to acheive the same effect (and use thicker stronger wire at the same time).

I still believe the best coils you can get by far would be pocket coils but with extreme conditions.

-coils should be wrapped in good quality cotton, not polyester

-coils should be stitched and tied together, not using glue

-should not be foam encased, they should be reinforced with coir, or flax....
