Please update me on mattress buying basics! - Alisande
Oct 15, 2011 7:24 PM
Several years ago, when I was mattress-obsessed and in the throes of shopping for one, I was fairly active on this forum. Eventually, after three or four returned mattresses, I found one I was happy with: a Lemoyne Sleeper innerspring, rather firm, topped (by me) with an inch of memory foam and then an inch of latex. My mattress and I have been doing well ever since.

Now my son and daughter-in-law are shopping for a new mattress. They're furnishing a new house, and can't spend a lot on the mattress. I know that can translate to poor economy, and want to share with them what I learned here. To sum up, this is what I remember:

The S brands are to be avoided, with the possible exception of some Simmons models.

Many of today's mattresses are made with inferior materials, including poor quality...

Real quick,

My 5 week old Tempurpedic Cloud (set is $1999 in Queen) is best ever and should hold up for years.

A 3 layer blended ttalalay latex was not good for me on typical pine slat foundation.  Firmed up and hard on shoulders.  Reasonably comfortable on box spring, but lacked a solid, conforming feel.

iComfort memory foam had quality issues.

Stearns and Foster innerspring plush was pretty good in store, but cheapo batting in quilt and cheap top comfort foams compressed leaving a not so great mattress by morning time.

--------------------------

The only innerspring I might have tried out was Simmons beautyrest 'St. Bees Evenloft' from Sears ... although I'm not crazy about their box springs.  It was a blend of NxG memory foam with ordnary foam.  It may have been alright for the price.  I like...

Mattress feels OK, but still a bit too firm in warmer weather. Obviously, there is no way to try the bed out in Costco and the reason we bought it is due to the liberal return policy. Didn't think we were going to need it after the first week or so, but now we will take advantage of it.

You also said that Sleep Innovations is not in any chain store near you, but if the store has the Serta iComfort, they absolutely have Sleep Innovations in the store.

I would imagine that you may be correct about the middle core being the root cause of the problem. I would REALLY like to try out the TP, but the "no store...

I'll see if I could pick out a better looking king foam mattress on Costco ....

It seems all of the Novaform mattresses have 2.5" gel memory foam over some type of 2 ish inches of support foam or 'wave foam', then a 7" core.

At least the $999 11" Hybrid Bliss has 2" combined memory foam over 2" medium latex over the 7" core.  That should give a little softer feel than the 2.5" gel foam over the 'firm layer' that's in your basic Novaform.

Are you saying the stores in NE had '90 day trial' TP signs posted yet they didn't offer refunds when buying...

After getting rid of our Sealy Posturpedic plush pillowtop mattress (which was terribly saggy after 7 years), we just saved a lot of money and got a better quality product by buying a medium firm (not plush) mattress set and adding our own toppers instead of a pillowtop.  Plush pillowtop mattresses tend to have the shortest lifespan, both because the springs are softer/thinner and because the pillowtop is made of cheap, soft foams that wear out quickly.  If you buy your own toppers, you can get higher quality materials (we bought a 2" layer of zoned convoluted memory foam and a 3" layer of soft latex + foam) and just add layers until you get the perfect amount of cushion.  Meanwhile, the mattress underneath the toppers will be firm enough that it won't sag or suck you both into a crater in the middle of the bed.  If you need...

I think it really helps to think of the "support layer" (the actual mattress, not including pillowtop) and the "comfort layer" (the pillowtop or other cushion layer on top of the mattress) separately.    After our old plush pillowtop mattress started sagging in the middle, we bought a new Simmons Beautyrest Classic plush-firm mattress, but there was nothing plush about it.  It was *really* firm when we actually slept on it all night.  We added a 3" soft latex topper, but even that wasn't enough, and I had shoulder and neck stiffness in the morning.  We almost exchanged the mattress for the plush version, but after testing it out in the store, we realized the plush mattress was just going to turn into our old mattress in a few years, so we added a second topper instead.  We decided on a 2" convoluted zoned memory foam topper for $80 and...

We recently bought a Simmons Beautyrest firm mattress (because our old plush one started sagging in the middle) and instead of getting a built-in pillowtop, we added two toppers to make it comfortable for side sleeping.  What ended up working best was a 3" Invigo Fresh latex topper (consists of a bottom layer of 1.5" regular foam with a top layer of 1.5" latex foam, all in a terrycloth case) with a 2" zoned convoluted memory foam topper under it.  Together, these toppers have turned this painfully firm mattress into the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on!  It's stiill very supportive because of the firm mattress underneath, but it's very cozy and I get no shoulder, hip or neck stiffness.  Both of these toppers are available on Amazon.com.  The 2" Isotonic 6 Zone memory foam topper was less than $80 for a queen size, and the Invigo Fresh 3"...
Help end my mattress search saga! Looking for memory foam with no toxic fumes - mjoeroy

I'm glad I found this site.  It's comforting to know I'm not the only one having problems finding the right mattress.  The long & short of it is that I'm trying to find a memory foam bed with no or little toxic fumes.  Here's my story:

We slept for 13 years on a Simmons Beautyrest.  Only in the last year we would both were waking up sore so we figured it was time to change.  I researched & tried several mattresses.  Ended it up picking the Ava (tight top, plush firm) from the black label collection of Beautyrest (also called Carmen in some on-line stores).  That's really the one that seemed the best to us.  When we first got it it seemed softer than at the store but still comfortable.  Unfortunately I got it only a week before going on a 2 weeks vacation.  My comfort guarantee...

We bought an all latex king bed a few months ago but I'm experiencing

low back pain and pressure point pain (a side sleeper).  We're considering returning this mattress

and purchasing a Simmons Comforpedic.  My big concern is the health risk of sleeping on memory

foam rather than a more natural latex.  Does anyone have any experience with the Comforpedic mattress?

We're considering purchasing this from Sleepy's.  Thanks for any feedback....
