Re: What can I expect on new Stearns and Foster entry level Luxury Plush? - jimsocal

ALL the S Co mattresses will likely break down in a year or two. When they do, do mattress surgery (see highlighted posts at top of the forum re mattress surgery or DIY mattresses).

As to the new Sealys and some others with extra foam in the hip area I really don't know if they work or feel good or not. But in general I'd say the S&F is better than the Sealy. The starter S&F's don't have as many coils as the Simmons but I've not tried either so the S&F may or may not be good coils. Honestly if I were going to buy a spring mattress and couldn't afford too much money I'd probably look for a deal on one of the Simmons close out models. They just came out with new ones to replace their Classics so you could pick up a classic for...

Danielle,

Hi!  I bought a bed from SleepEZ because of all the great reviews here but was also disappointed with my purchase once it arrived and ended up sending it back after only two days.  I know some say you should give it time but it was such a bad experience right from the git go for us (my dh and me).  The day it came we noticed the mattress had some dark moldy looking stuff on it and my dh called to ask about it.  We were told it was common to get that when they are pressing the latex down or something to that nature.  Then while we were laying the pieces out, the dust was so bad that it kicked me and my sons asthma in...

Re: Innerspring Mattress Recommendations PLEASE! - jimsocal

I am one who needs some kind of springiness under latex, and my wife is even more so, so I can understand the dilemma of trying to find an innerspring mattress that might work.

I went through a number of inner spring mattresses years ago and found all of them lacking and returned them all. Nowadays most mattress stores charge around a 20% handling fee for comfort exchanges plus an extra delivery charge that may be around $100. So if you buy a $2000 bed that's around $500 cost to exchange it and most will not take a pure return, only an exchange.

That said, I must say I am leaning towards trying a Simmons mattress at this point. I used to hate them becuase I had one that became very uncomfortable in a short time. But in hindsight, I did move it around a lot...

Does anyone on this forum happen to know what "smartlatex" really is? Just curious why they don't just call it latex. Must be synthetic?

Any help deciphering this buzzword would be appreciated! Myself, I'd prefer it if they'd call a spade a spade, and quit giving things names like "smartlatex." Between that and all the other marvelous undefined enhancements being touted in the mattress industry, like they're supposed to mean something and that we're supposed to know what they mean, I'm getting the shudders. I'm about ready to make my own mattress out of straw.

I did some recent investigating of foams and mattresses from Sealy/S&F and Simmons.

The Sealy literature says that "smart latex" is latex that has soft latex poured over firmer latex, so really it's similar to 2 pieces...

Your concerns are valid and relevant to this forum.  It may seem like a lot of DIY stuff on the forum but its just because it seems to be the best way to go when on a budget because the 'S' Brand stuff rarely lives up to expectations.  I suspect (could be wrong) that your initial love of the mattress is simply the honey moon phase.  Most people do sleep better on a new mattress...its a question of how long before this ends when a lot of polyfoam is used in the mix.  Before you panic or fret...I would try to find the exact specs of the model you got...then perhaps go from there to look at what options you still have.

"I didn't realize this forum was for DIY"

I don't recall anyone saying this forum is for DIY only. I have tested a S&F pillowtop in a store and it felt lovely, but I didn't want springs. IMO you have a good mattress; I've heard mostly good reviews in regards to S&F. Like another poster has stated already, its the foam in the pillowtop that will more than likely degrade first.

I'm not an expert like some of the particpants on this list are. But I have seen some posts from people besides DIY types here. I think I even saw one from a DIY type who is considering getting a Stearns & Foster bed for the springs, then putting his tatex on top, like you're thinking about doing. Depending on your warranty, you could turn in your mattress for a  partial refund if it develops problems later, or you could do mattress surgery when that happens are remove the probably PU foam on top and replace it with latex or some other topper layer(s) that you like at that time. Or you can turn it back in now. So you do have options, and it's not necessarily a bad decision or the end of the road....I think I've read on here that S&F makes a pretty good set of springs,...
Another DIY Latex Bed from FBM - SleepLikeADog

Hi everyone, medium term lurker here who finally registered to ask for feedback on a DIY design.  I found WhatsTheBest forum several months ago while searching for general information and buying advice on latex beds and was floored at the quantity of information to consider.

There are few decisions more subjective than a mattress.  I'm 50 years @ 225 lbs and prefer a firmer mattress, my wife is 46 years @ 145 lbs with slight Scoliosis that doesn't cause her any pain and she prefers a softer mattress.  The good news is we're easy to please as we've been sleeping on a 10 year old Stearns & Foster flippable pillow-top queen without (much) complaint.

Any of the high rated custom shops like Flo-Beds, Custom Sleep Design, Sleep EZ, SLAB, Arizona Premium Mattress, etc would be safe to buy from.  Outstanding customer service comes at a price...

Had to cancel and reorder the mattress last Thursday.  Been sleeping on a twin.  I'm 6'2" and had a Posturepedic regular twin for about 9 yrs.  Obviously I need a twin XL.  I believe S&F has had individual coils in their mattresses for a couple years or so.  The twin has about 450 coils and they're supposed to be double tempered. I hope the foam holds up pretty well.  I'll let you guys know.  It's due to be here June 17th.  Sears S&F Hearthstone Luxury Plush twin XL matt & box, $1,012 + tax....
What can I expect on new Stearns and Foster entry level Luxury Plush? - slpngoc

I have a new Stearns and Foster set due to come in June 10th.  It's the entry level Luxury line Sears calls 'Hearthstone Luxury Plush' without pillowtop.

I plan to protect it right away with a Protect O Bed waterproof cover.  This mattress has the individual coils.

I've heard some posts here about foam breaking down in the center sleeping area.  Is this what to expect in a year or two?

Would it be better to get a Posturepedic with the 'power packed' foam in the middle 1/3 of the mattress?  Or memory foam in that area? Or skip anything with regular high density foam?

Opinions appreciated, thanks.
