Re: help! new mattress too hard. How do I soften it up? - Kait

It sounds like your bed needs breaking in a bit, if it feels harder than the one in the store.  One topper to try meanwhile might be just a cheapie p/u foam one from Target.  I've used them in the past over a Select Comfort bed and it softened it nicely.  Worst part about that stuff is that it works fine and then in the middle of the night somewhere down the line it just stops working.  So if it works for you, try keeping a backup in the closet for that time.  Meanwhile, your bed should soften with use.

Re: Just give up and use a airbed? - Kait

One of my(many) mattresses was a very early Select Comfort air bed.  Mine didn't have the pillowtop, so I added cheap Target foam on top which made it sleep nicely.  However, the toppers seemed to go bad all at once, in the middle of the night, where I'd wake up and be in such discomfort I'd have to get up and go to the couch.  So, I went to a latex bed, and on and on and so forth.  There really was nothing wrong with the air mattress other than that.  However, I found that I liked the feeling of springs better for my back, so later when I slept on a sc mattress in a hotel, in spite of their luxurious mattress toppers, it did not sleep well for me.  This was after my back had started the chronic pain from bad foam on other mattresses.

The best price I found on the Natura washable wool/cotton mattress pad was at Select Comfort.  ......  LL Bean also has a washable wool/cotton mattress pad for $129 (I think?).

Thanks for the tip on Select Comfort. The Web site didn't have a full-size pad (just king & queen sizes), but maybe I'll call the local SC store to see if they have it in stock. Otherwise, the LL Bean one might be worth trying for me (full size is $109).

So I am spending a lot of money, and getting a bit burned out on that. However, the only things I really bought in the last 20 years were sheets, 1 cheap mattress pad, 1 piece of memory foam from Costco, and 1 down comforter. So, I guess I am due for a total makeover.

Funny; I'm doing the same thing (total bed makeover). I...
