I need mattresses for the kids -- help! - stacytr

I haven't been on here for a while since my mattress surgery last year. We are still tweaking, but our sleep is SO much better than it was. Thank you for all the great advice everyone has given me. :)

Now I have a new problem. I've been searching through here for days, but have found very little information regarding mattresses for kids. My 9 yr old son is less than 60 pounds (long and lean) and is on an Ikea foam mattress that looks similar to this one. We've had it for 3-4 years and just put a 2" pink overstock memory foam over it with a Costco cuddlebed on top. We've had the memory foam for a year (just on a different bed), so I'm not too worried about offgasing -- but I don't know if it's a good choice for support and...

Hi!  I would like to add some input here as I've been thru it all I think.

Serta Simmons and Sealy all make a nice mattress.  I like Serta the best because of the coil architecture.  Simmmons, individual springs, there is no support, they will keep sinking, no matter the gauge.  Sealy, never again.  Why? Bonnell coil.

Also to be considered is the foundation.  What happened to the box spring?  Now it's just a cheap structure of stiff wire with no give and nothing more than a waste.  When they made real box springs, the mattress could sink in and it was a system of support.  Not now.

I have a nice Serta mattress resting on a firm foam base with a latex topper.  My solution.

Stearns & Foster Plush Euro-top VS Serta iComfort Revolution - gdulaney

Husband - late 40's, moderate body frame (he's at an appropriate weight for his height)...he has some minor lower back pain (age-related, not injury-related)

Me - mid-40's, need to lose some weight.... I have GERD (acid reflux) and restless legs

Our current mattress is OLD.... it's a pillow-top queen and has been a very good mattress. We recently went on a cruise and the mattress on the ship was so comfy. Neither of us was achy in the morning and both of us slept the night through. It's listed as a Sealy Posturepedic Premium Plush Euro-top mattress.

The closest I've found is the S&F Clearbrook Plush Euro-top. We were about to buy when my husband sat (then layed) on the iComfort Revolution....

I think because the foam layers are weak and have compressed bringing your body directly in contact with the spring architecture.  You may experience a "hammock effect" resulting in low back pain, especially if you side sleep.

I'm new here so I would not suggest surgery but the same thing happened to me years ago with a sealy pillowtop.  After 9 months I ripped the pillowtops off but I still ended up ditching the set.  Plus, I think sealy uses the Bonnell coil.  Not good as they lock up after any amount of compression

Good luck.  I am so glad I found this room because I have gone thru many ordeals just to get a good sleep

The Sealy Posturepedic plush models from about 4 years ago had a LOT of comfort foam on top (the coils were less than 6" in height) measure your old mattress thickness (1" base foam, 5-3/4" coil and the rest is comfort foam and quilting... most sagging in that line-up was in the foams and not the coils... this is why manufacturers usually want about 1-1/2" or more depression to make a warranty claim; it takes at least that much to show the foams are breaking down too fast.

Depending on the soy foam ILD, the in-store model may feel firmer based on the how often it has been tested (broken in)... the coils should not change throughout its life...

You may want to test again and spend at least 20 minutes on each one and see how relaxed you feel after 20 minutes in each one......

Thanks for the reply.  cant dust mites go through the side of the mattress and bypass the latex pillowtop into the coils?

I was just thinking soy may last longer than coils because all the Sealy coils I have purchased, end up sagging in 3-4 years.

As far as the dust mites go... no, they can not move laterally at all, they burrow straight down.

As far as soy based foam vs. coils that would depend on usage, weight, humidity, etc. If the Sealy bed was a "Sealy" line and not a Posturepedic line from Sealy, then the coils were not designed for true adult use for an extended period of time...

After looking at the mattress link to Sears that you posted, I should warn you that the mattress listed is designed in Sealy's line-up as a promotional (albeit, higher up than the first few beds in their line-up) and since you had your last bed for 20 years, you will be discouraged by the duration of the life of this mattress. I sold this line-up (under different names of course, but the specs are the same). The warranty, at least in this case, is a pretty good indicator of the durability of this level of mattress. Since $800 is your budget and you are concerned about the $522 price tag for a mat only, I would tell you a couple of things:

  • The coils used in this bed are actually the same coils Sealy used to use in their Posturepedic line-up (full 10 year warranty...

You seemed to be a little confused about what is used in each brand uses as coil systems.

Serta uses the continous coil which in fact is the lightest spring unit in the industry using the least amount of steel. It does have a decent design and holds up fairly well depending on which unit you get. In their starting line they use the Bonnell coil.

Simmons individually pocketed coil system is great for motion transfer as it doesnt distribute your weight across the bed so you do give up some duarbility. You dont give up support, because you are sleeping on more coils in most Breauty Rest then you do on any other mattress. It just doesnt maintian that level of support as...

Asking for advice between iComfort and Cloud - TrueBlueLS
Feb 7, 2012 3:02 AM
Last night my fiancee and I went out in search of a new mattress. Our current mattress is a Sealy Posturepedic Classic 300 that was "made exclusively" for Montgomery Wards. I'm guessing this thing has to be at least 15 years old and needs to go as we cannot sleep a full night without having to readjust. We decided we wanted a bed that was plush, but not something you would completely sink into and have a hard time getting out. I wanted to look at the Temperpedic Cloud and liked that. The salesman then came over and pointed us to the iComfort Renewal Refined. I understand that your sleep is the most important thing, but I am having a hard time justifying $2,999 for the mattress and foundation with Serta only having these out a year. Can someone give me some insight on the Renewal Refined, what the Temperpedic...
Expecting a baby; switching from coil to memory foam mattress - smariner

Hello everyone,

We haven't shopped for a new mattress in over 10 years, and are looking for some advice.

We currently use a "Sealy Posturepedic Mira Loma Queen Mattress", puchased from costco over 10 years ago. We are expecting a little one in a few weeks, and are shopping for a king sized mattress. We tend to prefer firm/ultra-firm mattresses. Tried a few coil & memory foam mattresses. To give you a sense of what we've like....here are some models that we have liked so far.

  1. Simmons BeautyRest Elderberry viscoplush (at a mattress outlet)
  2. Sealy icomfort Revolution (at Sears)
  3. Memoryworks Olivewood Euro Pillow Top Cushion Firm (at a mattress outlet)

We tried a few plush mattresses, and didn't like it as much (eg: Costco's...
