Initial Mattress Choices - Gardner Mattress - inquisitive
Feb 17, 2013 8:13 AM
For the last 4 years I have slept on a very cheap mattress I bought online from Walmart. While I haven't had any problems I would like to get a quality mattress and hopefully improve my sleep quality. I am planning on going to the Gardner Mattress store in Salem, MA which has been recommended on this forum (unless the Newton or Woburn stores are acceptable, which are closer to me).

What kinds of mattresses should I try out there and how long do I try each one for? I know I need a firm core/certain amount of support but don't know my other preferences (eg innerspring, waterbed, memory foam, latex, topper, etc). Also is it possible to have a firm core and have it be comfortable? I want it to give a lot of support.

My current one is a full and I am 5'7''...

Thanks for the great responses.

Are you familiar with the Newton and Woburn locations of Gardner Mattress? They are closer to me but I could also go to Salem.

Any opinions on toppers, should I consider getting a really firm mattress and then using a topper to try to combine the best of both worlds, that is good support + comfort? Is this possible? I almost always sleep on my back but probably turn a bit during the night.

Also, is there any way to search this forum by just the topic threads? The search functionality doesn't seem that great and I don't want to answer questions that have already been discussed.

Are your shoulders not sinking in enough?

That might be the problem; I'm not sure.

When I'm on my side, the bottom shoulder feels crunched. If I push down on my bottom shoulder to raise myself up, then my spine straightens.

I'm wondering if the springs -- even if they're in relatively decent condition overall -- could have started to wear down unevenly, since the mattress was resting on what is essentially a slatted foundation, not a real box spring. Dunno; just a thought.

The problem might just be that these offset coils are not the right kind of coils for me, and either pocket coils or old-fashioned Bonnell would be better.

Some of the mattresses make the midsection firmer, so maybe that...

Eoren, I bought the Gardner Latex mattress in "medium" then exchanged it for the "firm".   The owner tried to overcompensate for my medium being too soft and made me an EXTRA Firm all latex mattress.  I found this mattress to be way too firm for me but didn't try to exchange it again.   Instead, I purchases another 3 inches of talalay "medium" online, then added another inch of memory foam on top of that.   I'm happy now, but if I had it all to do over again, I'd probably buy that spring mattress with the top layer of latex.  That was the other one that I almost bought.     Just my experience with Gardner.......

Shoulder/hip pain...need advice - eoren1

After a lot of research and sitting on mattresses, we settled on a king size pocket coil with 3" talay latex on top with in ILD of 19.  Bought from Gardner mattress in Salem, MA. My wife loves our new bed.  I have been having shoulder and hip pain though.  I have it a few months but it hasn't gotten any better.  If it helps, I'm 5' 8" and about 160lb.  I'm leaning toward a 1" topper and hoping that will help.  Any suggestions on an ILD for that that will help me and not leave the bed too soft for my wife?  Guess i can get two twin size ones of different ILDs but worry about them possibly shifting over time.

Thanks!

Bought from Salem.  The Gardner happened to be there today.

Our salesman gave us 10% off as the website had been running the promotion as of when I went in there last weekend.  Thought that was incredibly nice as I hadn't mentioned it thinking it had expired.

Thanks Mark

Just ordered the 3" latex over coil in a King from Gardner.  We wavered between it and the 9" firm latex mattress.  In the end, this one felt more supportive.

I was thrilled with their salesman, return/exchange policy and it's nice to support a local business.  Will report back after it arrives this weekend.

Tons of interesting responses in this forum about Dr. Breus' beds. In my experience, the name of the person on the bed (Donald Trump, Vera Wang, Dr. Breus, etc) usually have very little to do with the actual product performance. I will say that Dr. Breus , in the area of the sleep sciences, is absolutely phenomenal... when it comes to the actual mattresses, it seems like it might be a little self-serving. I havenot tried out this line of beds yet, but I do know some of the other reponses have listed some inaccurate info.

Inquisitive,

Here are some suggestions for local mattress makers that make incredibly high quality mattresses and if you were to compare them to the S brands that you are focusing on you will find that the cost to quality ratio is MUCH higher with these folks.

Gardner Mattress ( www.gardnermattress.com ) - I recommend that you visit their showroom in Salem. Their sales staff is incredibly knowledgeable. Spend at least 15 mins lying on the mattresses the way that you would sleep. If you decide to buy - haggle, haggle, haggle.

Worley Beds www.worleybeds.com in New Bedford great products same story as Gardner.

Mystic Bedding in Medford www.mysticbedding.com is a small shop with innerspring options but no full mem foam or latex

The Mattress Maker www.themattressmaker.com in Brockton.

When you are dealing with the S brands the unfortunate...

After years of going to the "sleep stores" or department stores for mattresses I finally did some real research. Local/Regional manufacturers are the best bets for truly high quality bedding. Here in the Northeast you can look at companies like Gardner Mattress, Portland Mattress Makers, Daly Bros (Maiden Maine), Yankee Mattress Factory and many others. They make great products with multiple options from basic innerspring to latex.
