Re: My new Flobed - Lynn2006

I forgot what I have but I have a soft topper over an XFirm, over an XFirm over a Super Firm queen split latex cores (I kept both sides the same) and I love my bed and I love her firm it is with a little give. I initially went much softer but it hurt my back.  I am not quite 5 feet and around 100 lbs so maybe I don't sink in enough to feel the bed being too firm. I always loved very firm beds.  I sleep on a latex pillow as I have all of my life but never had a latex bed until May 2007.  I have all 100% natural Talalay Latex except for the bottom core which is a blended Super Firm since it did not come in 100% natural Talalay Latex in 2007.

I think the pillow is part of the comfort...

why is flobed more expensive? - troof

I am having trouble comparing apples and oranges.  I know 100% natural latex is more expensive than blended and that Talalay is more expensive than Dunlop.  But it seems that especially in the all natural mattresses, Flobeds is considerably more expensive than other sites also offering 100% natural mattresses as well as trial periods with full returns (not just comfort exchanges) like Habitat Furnishings and Plushbeds (which both use Dunlop in the core as opposed to Flobeds).  Is the cost difference just the Dunlop vs. Talalay difference?  Is it worth it to spend so much on a Flobed?  I am afraid I will never be able to compare a Dunlop/Talalay layered mattress with a full Talalay without ordering mattresses from different sites and returning one which doesn't seem practical.  Green Mattress Factory offers both and a 6 month return, but I don't see anything on these forums about the company. ...

I tried out one of the pocket-coil beds: the "Majestic Dream deluxe plush pocket coil w/2" latex/foam euro top (one-sided)." I asked the salesman about the coil gauge and about the description as "Luraflex" (because I thought "Lura-Flex" referred only to Leggett & Platt's open-offset coils). He said there's a Luraflex pocket-coil spring, too. (I'm still skeptical, ...  but whatever). According to the spec sheet the salesman gave me, the gauge is 14 (matches what's on Jamestown's website).

OK, I know I'm being like a dog with a bone here, and I don't mean to be overly critical, but I wanted to know if I could trust the specs I was given the other day, and I get impatient when companies put incorrect info on their websites.*

So I emailed someone in the bedding group...

There have been plenty of people that like talalay latex mattresses.  That is what flobeds uses, and plenty have been happy with those.  100% natural Latex International is a good product.   I use it for top layers over coils.   Dunlop is a denser, firmer feel.   So, in general side sleepers might prefer talalay and back or stomach sleepers might be prefer dunlop.    Of course it depends on quality, firmness, etc., so you can't make any hard and fast rules.   Some people like the latex over coils or with some memory foam added in.  The only concensus is that there is no concensus on what everyone will like.

One more early remark to add to the list regarding this bed:

5. Flobeds do not sleep hot. I've read other posts where people claim their latex beds sleep hot. I'm not sure if it is because of the wool built into the encasement, the St. Dormeir cover, or the fact that I went with 100% natural talalay, but I can assure you that my Flobed does not sleep hot. If anything, it sleeps a little on the cool side.

Thanks, GK. Your "notes" section from an earlier post is very informative. You make the point that "with experience, it's possible to get it right the first time." Well, I suppose that's theoretically possible and certainly desireable. I'd love to do that, but am feeling overwhelmed at the moment with all the options.

GK- Do you know if one can actually feel the difference between a Dunlop and Talalay firm or extra firm when on the bottom layer? I know the blended Talalay is lighter weight (man- I read about one king mattress that weighs in at 170 pounds!) but does it support as well as the Dunlop for that layer? If I could figure that out, at least I woudn't have to fret about trying both, perhaps saving one potential swap.

Thanks.

You are right about the ILD's being different and Sleepez does not have a convoluted layer on top as far as I know.  Here are their ILDs:  http://www.sleepez.com/mattresscomponents.htm

My feeling is that 22 ILD is not soft enough for a side sleeper with my weight (or yours) unless your dimensions for the hip and shoulders (and waist?) are fairly close to being the same.  I believe I have seen complaints about this on this forum in the past about Sleepez being too hard for side sleepers and I don't think they offer a softer "topper" if it is.  I found 22-24 ILD from them to be too "hard" for me but I'm old and more sensitive to the feel....believe me, I've tried many combinations using different...
