I tried using the 2.5" Novaform gel and 2.5" 5lb Aerus.  Both were too soft for me in combination with 3" of latex on top of the Sealy springs.  So, I have been using just 1" of 5.9lb. memory foam and 4" of latex for quite a while.   That works pretty well for me (a side sleeper).   From bottom to top I have Sealy coils (pretty firm - high coil count), 2" of 32 natural talalay, 1" 24 natural talalay, 1" 5.9lb memory foam, 1" 19 blended talalay.  I also cut out a section of the 32 latex under the shoulders and put in a softer piece there.

Personally I like having 1" of memory foam in the mix, but more than that can make it too soft.  However, some people don't seem to like having any memory foam at all.   Generally I advise going in 1" increments for the...

Sandman - did you ever get a chance to take a look at this 1.5" of Aerus?  At $89, I am curious as to what the density is, but I like the fact that it is thinner than the 2.5" we have both tried.

Yes, I have seen that.  At the 12lb.s they list the queen size at, it is 3.0lb density.  So, I personally rule it out on that basis.  I assume it would not last as long and probably be even less supportive than the 5lb.

I probalby would have kept the 5lb if it were 1.5".  Unfortunately, I have never found it less than 2.5" in the 5lb density.   It does not provide enough support for me...

what lb memory foam does Tempurpedic use?

I think most of the Tempurpedic is 5.3.  However, some of the higher end mattresses have some higher density layers as well.  I think the Cloud has some less than 5.3.

Density is not destiny though!  The 5.0 density Sensus seems firmer to me than the 5.0 density Aerus.  So, the feel can vary quite a bit.  Unfortunately, there does not seem to be much data that tells you how it will feel.  My experience has been that the newer "breathable" foams are softer than the less breathable ones.  I guess that is the compromise.  If you like soft and are not too heavy, than the 5.0 Aerus is pretty nice.  I probably would use it, if was not as thick.

I tried the Aerus last night with 1" of 19 ILD latex above it.  I moved the 1" of 24 to the bottom of the stack, so from top to bottom I had 1" 19 ILD latex, 2.5" 5lb Aerus, 2" 32 latex, 1" 24 latex.  Wool topper and mattress pad over everything.

I would say that definitely felt a bit more supportive for several hours.  After everything warmed up, I could still feel a fair amount of sinking in.  I could make a little firmer still by taking out the 1" of 24 on the bottom.  I did not notice any back pain in the morning, so it seems like an okay solution.

However, at this point I feel like I am trying to work around a flaw and will probably return the Aerus.  At 2.5" if is too thick for the support it gives me.  It...

I think a big part of the problem with memory foam, and you have touched on this before as well, is that every company is going in a slightly different direction in terms of how they make it and also that there is nobody that has a range of choices available in the same material so it's difficult to customize. Foamex is a good example of this where they make a good product and yet it is only available in a limited range inside of each "line". I have seen mattresses using 8 lb memory foam for example http://www.ebed.com/mf_luvienna.php and yet it seems near impossible to get and use as part of a layering scheme.

Some companies are experimenting with polyol variations, some with TDI and MDI variations, and some with other technologies (mixtures) leading to differences in heat sensitivity, breathability, ild at the same density, support...

Help w/ Selecting Mattress Topper - sawdin

I could use some advice on selecting a mattress topper.  I’ve read many of the posts on this forum (great resource!) and here’s my very generalized ‘understanding’ of the difference between traditional memory foam and latex (Dunlop or Talalay):

1)     You sleep IN a memory foam topper because memory foam is viscous and thus ‘flows’ whereas you sleep ON a Latex topper because it compresses underneath you rather than ‘flows’ away from body pressure.

2)     Memory foam will sleep ‘hotter’ than Latex; though new types of memory foam such as Foamex’ Aerus will be ‘cooler’ than standard memory foam, and Latex International’s Celsion will maintain a consistent body temperature.

3)     If the memory foam is too soft, it won’t provide much, if any, support (e.g., you bottom out).  If a Latex foam is too hard/resilient, it might not alleviate pressure points.

I’ve...

Please help with topper , wool or foam? - BobKat

Hi,

I have a 4 inch memory foam that I got at overstock about 8 years ago, it has I believe, broken down. It rips easy now and there is a big depression in the center where I sleep that no longer will recover. My lower back is complaining again and I am no longer getting a good sleep. I also have a bad rotator cuff from a recent accident that hurts more if I sleep without the memory foam. I have a gold bond extra firm mattress as a base for the topper that is less than a year old.

I have been looking at the following products:

Aerus Natural 4.0 lb. Plush 2.5” Memory Foam 2.5 inch I saw at samsclub

a wool topper that has 8.33 lbs of wool  from naturaworld

Sam's Club memory foam (Night Therapy vs. Aerus) - Dallasgirl

Hi everyone,

After MUCH additional research and the last ten days piled into the queen bed in our guest room, it's time to make a decision. Of course, given that we've been burned by pillow top sagging, the generally poor quality of a lot of mattresses these days, the pretty much non existent warranties (well, none that will ever be honored), and the general shenanigans of this industry, I am so nervous. I am willing to spend a good amount on a mattress, but given our history, I will be very upset if a new fancy mattress is sagging again in under two years, I cannot return, and I am out $1,000-2,000 for a king.

So- I think I've concluded that I'd like to buy from Sam's or Costco due to their very general and long term return policies.

Please keep in mind that we...
