So, I am going to replace the 1" of HRfoam with 1" of either Talalay or Dunlop latex.
Since I don't know what ILD the HR is that I have used - and at times I've used Firm and Medium with success - I am not sure which ILD to buy to replace it, so would like opinions from those who are sleeping on latex or familiar with it.
Here's how the build will be (what has worked before):
Springs on bottom (Englander 12.5 gauge)
Next (over a very thin 1/4" or so layer of memory foam just to keep the foam from being damaged by the springs): the Talalay or Dunlop I'll be buying (1")(?)
3/4" of soft Talalay (I already have;...

Thank you.
I did find a 1" Talalay place with free shipping, so I may have to go with Talalay; or I may buy 1" of each.

Anyone know how to make links work as live clickable links, here?
I'm going to start another thread to ask for opinions as to ILD's I should buy if I buy one of each.

I would also call to verify what the ILDs are, because the ordering system only says, soft, soft/medium, etc....

You can also by custom size pieces of Talatech from foamonline. One idea is to buy the topper of the right firmness for below the shoulders, cut out a piece at the shoulders, and replace that cut out piece with a softer custom piece of blended Talatech.
It might also help to cut of the top and totally remove the junky foam they put in. Why doesn't any manufacturer just sell an innerspring with a few good inches of latex and/or zoned latex? Maybe they do I haven't run accross it....

The Overstock does seem like a lightweight, if the size and weigth calculated by LEO are respresentative....

Personally, I don't think 2 inches total above the springs will be enough, but I have never done mattress surgery like you. So, I think ordering 2 1" pieces upfront is smart (to help reduce average shipping cost). Then you could try with 1 or 2" below your softer piece . If you don't need both, you could use one on your wife's bed or return one.
Do you think your softer piece is still good? How old is it?
Also, have you checked to see if the springs have shifted around at all? One thing I worry about cutting the top of the mattress, is that it will lose structural support. The tightness of the...

Thanks to all who labor to help the rest of us find a night's sleep. I am a 60 YO male, 170 pounds, 60% side and 40% back sleeper with lower back pain. I am a restless sleeper, toss and turn, and cannot stand heat, so those factors ruled out memory foam. Being old with no muscle covering my shoulders and hips any more, when sleeping on my side I need just enough padding (latex) to accommodate those pressure points. But when I lay on my back, soft enough for shoulder/hip meant too soft to support my butt when sleeping on my back. During the night, my body would apparently sense my butt "falling" and hold it up... and I would crawl out of bed with aching lower back lumbar pain.
I have chased the problem for five years.. probably $5000 worth of mattresses (12, but numerous swaps with each purchase)...

Thanks to all who post here to help others.
I have bought both Foam by Mail's 19 ILD and recently Sleep Like a Bear's 19 ILD on recommendation here when FBM's was not soft enough.
I would estimate that SLAB Talatech product is approximately 40% less dense, and hence 40% softer than FBM.
Sleep like a Bear is a great company providing service second to none and offers a refund, but it comes at a price.
Before ordering a 1% Queen 19 ILD I asked what the return charge would be from Atlanta to SLAB in California.
For a $172 shipping included original price, $36 would be deducted. I was considering returning until I came up with zoning
my bed (wow, another post to explain... the answer to 12 mattresses, 30 toppers and 5 years).. I was about to return it.
Shipping, insured ground by Fedex was going to be $14, so there was a $22...
