Re: Sick from natural latex foam bed - jimsocal

I have some random comments on this:

First, it is my impression that the reason latex gloves are sometimes "powdered" is to make them smoother to get in and out of. I use latex gloves to shower with due to allergies to soaps and shampoos and believe me sometimes getting in and out of them can be difficult due to friction. So I think the powder is to reduce friction.

The OP mentioned putting the latex mattress out in the sun to get rid of the off-gassing or whatever. I wanted to mention that direct sun is very bad for latex, particularly synthetic latex, but I think all latex. It dries it out and when it gets dry enough it can turn to powder. If you go to mattress stores where they have Stearns and Foster latex mattresses on display sometimes you'll find a book next...

Sampled Clarity Latex Bed at The Natural Mattress Store - slpngoc

Ok, so I've heard what many have said about latex on this site and very luckily, we in the SF Bay Area have a local organic mattress maker that specializes quite a bit in all natural latex beds with organic wool and cotton materials.  They have 3 Bay Area stores and manufacter in San Rafael.  This is no vapor store, they are the real deal.  Here is their website which I think you'll find very informative and a bit entertaining too.  Look up the reviews on Yelp, overwhelmingly positive  (btw, I don't work for the store in any way)  -

So, I drive to downtown Palo Alto, little busy with cars.  The gentleman in store recommends their Clarity bed which has individual coils and 3" of 97% natural latex, organic wool for fire barrier and organic cotton cover.  I tried the 'soft' bed and it...

I've been on this this S&F Hearthstone (the entry level traditional line) Plush for 3 weeks now.  It's a good bed no doubt.  There is some indentation that remains after getting off the bed.  I don't have any backaches or neck pain after a night.  But I can't say the bed is spectacular.  I've also tried falling asleep on my back with pillow under knees, but I don't fall asleep til rolling onto left shoulder.  So, I'm thinking, this is it?

So, I went to Sleep Train where a saleslady introduced a Tempur-pedic Cloud Luxe on an adjustable base.  That was an eye opener.  With feet elevated, seems I might be able to sleep on my back.  I can't do the Tempurpedic price now, so had to walk from that.

I suspect this S&F might not flex very well on an adjustable base.  S&F says a...

You can always add or take away layers of latex to suit yourself, and it's a lot easier and cheaper than returning beds or having to discard a perfectly good one due to broken down foam and huge depressions in the  top.

Sounds like good advice.  So much easier to change toppers than mattresses.

As for...

I just started an exchange process at Sears to move to an iComfort Revolution with the standard box spring.  I had a Stearns and Foster delivered June 17th from Sears, it's an entry level S&F called 'Hearthston', non pillow top, Plush.  It's a good bed for sure, but I have a right shoulder that will never be quite the same (old injury/surgery).  And I'm a side sleeper.  If it wasn't for this, I probably would keep the S&F.

I became interested in memory foam due to the reported extra pressure relieving properties and I might get a motion adjustable base in a year or two to facilitate back sleeping (that would be better for my shoulder).

I probably won't get the Revolution delivered until June 12th.  I have laid on it a heck of a lot at Sears, both a twin xl and a queen.  The revolution...

Not to be antagonistic, but from what I've read, stomach sleeping is the least recommended position.  Apparently it can leave one prone to neck and back pain. 2/3 of people are side sleepers.  I know they say you should put a pillow under your hips when stomach sleeping.  If you use some sort of body pillow, it could train you to side sleep and not roll over to your stomach.  I have a spare King size pillow which I put between knees and lay my upper arm over it when side sleeping.  I find the 50" long body pillows a bit too long.

On to mattresses.

I would looking at a number of mattress stores including Sears if they have them nearby.  Each retailer has different selections.  Be very familiar with exchange policies (if they don't have one, find a retailer that does), and return policy.  Very common...

I've been sleeping two weeks on this bed, plenty of time to form a good impression (pun intended!).  It is a good bed for sure, but I won't call it spectacular.  I'm a die hard side sleeper with a tender right shoulder from a bench press injury and subsequent arthroscopic surgery years ago.  There is somewhat more pressure and push back into my left shoulder and of course my right.  I might be turning more often than I would on the right foam bed, so I've been looking again at the iComfort beds at Sears (this S&F is from Sears and I get one free comfort exchange).

The bed is a Plush and thank goodness for that.  The foam layers have of course formed and indentation conforming to my body.  I have no back or neck aches after a night's sleep, but my left shoulder has a good bit...

Hello,

I'd like to put in a request for anyone to give more feedback on the iComfort beds that you are using, particularly the Revolution.  Reason I ask is I am in a 30 day period using my Stearns and Foster from Sears.  It is a good bed, but there is a little more pressure on my shoulders than I would care for.  It is a Plush.  I'm a side sleeper and I naturally turn from my left to my right shoulder which ain't what it used to be due to an injury and surgery years ago (ok, in 1990).

I've tried the Revolution numerious times in the store and it is certainly more plush than my S&F bed.  It gives less pressure on my shoulder and hips too.  It feels good in the store, but as always, no way to tell without bringing it home.  I...

The Stearns and Foster entry level 'Hearthstone' (Sears) Luxury Plush twin XL set came in yesterday.  It's the traditional line, not Elite and does not have the Intellicoils, just double tempered pocketed coils.  Nicely packaged and it looks great.  When I put the bedskirt (dustruffle) on, I stood the mattress on its side.  Won't be doing that again.  I could tell it had a very slightly skewed look when I set it back on the box spring.  I massaged it to get it looking straight and it's fine, but no more standing the mattress on its side.

The Protect A Bed Premium waterproof protector fit perfectly and very snug.  Worth the $55.

I'm not going to comment much on the comfort after only one night on it, but I had no aches or pains after one night.  I'll follow up in a few weeks....
