OK, so I just did some math over at Foam by Mail, and I could get a 6" firm (covered) plus a couple 3" toppers and another cover for probably less than $700. That would leave me extra money for a platform bed frame.

Reasons why I shouldn't this (other than the cover is not as nice as the wool covers, no layer exchange, not certain about the quality of the latex)?

I was in your shoes about 8 years ago. I read this forum and wanted to try latex but didn't want to spend the $ on a flobeds even though I wanted to be able to try various layers.

Here's how I decided to go with flobeds. I thought:

I felt the same way about my flobeds mattress, when I tried one.

It felt like it was pushing back too much and would not let my body relax. I sent it back, got a refund, no problem.

What I finally realized for myself - some people are the same way - is that I need SPRINGS - or "coils" as the industry terms them - under my body. You might be like me in that respect.

But before you decide to re- do your whole mattress which you have a lot of $ invested in, try this:

Try a 1" or so layer of super soft latex. I'm going to recommend that you buy 1" of super soft Talatech latex in ILD 14 from sleeplikeabear.com. Note that it may take you a couple weeks or more to get it because they...

Re: The moment of truth. Overstock.com or foambymail? - jimsocal

If Overstock no longer offers a return after opening, then I'd go with FBM. Overstock in general has really gone downhill in terms of what they offer, so I'm not a big fan anymore.

I highly recommend buying no more than 1.5" of any topper. For me, once I get up to 2" it can hurt my back if it doesn't offer enough support. I actually think 1.5" is a good thickness, but adding 1" and then another 1" if necessary might work. Some people do tolerate up to 3" of soft toppers, so who knows?

With soft Talalay, 2" is probably okay though... but I can't say for sure.

I'm going to try 1" or 2" of sleeplikeabear's super soft Talatech some day, though.

I also have neck issues, numb arm and pain so I can relate. I also had a Sealy. We opened it up and did surgery on it. It worked for awhile; my wife is still using hers and I switched to an Englander and did surgery on that.

I looked for your mattress on the web and thanks to the S Co mattress companies' policy of changing their mattresses' names much like criminals, so no one can figure out exactly what they are or compare them, I could not find any specs on it. If you can find a link or give us the info as to what kind of springs, and more importantly, how many layers of PU foam is on top of the springs, then maybe we can tell you more authoritatively if it's too soft or too firm. Sometimes though, even if it's too firm,...

Re: Does Latex have a break in period? - jimsocal

I am really not a latex expert, but I have been reading about latex and using latex for awhile.

While I would say latex generally does not break down like memory foam - that's for sure - I would also say that latex DOES get somewhat softer with use. Not a lot but SOME. Maybe this is an arguable point but to me it seems that it does get a bit softer, and it stands to reason that it would because it is still FOAM and FOAM does break-in break-down over time.

That said, in this case it may be that you just "feel" it differently, that it's more likely just a perception.

If it continues to feel too firm I would try a softer Talalay topper - maybe only 1" or no more than 2" on top. SleepLikeABear has Talatech latex with something...

Bought and used this topper (in conjunction with the 10" latex mattress from Costco).  Sure feels like memory foam to me.  It's definitely soft and comfortable, but sleeps incredibly warm and doesn't have the typical "springiness" that the latex mattress itself has.  Any suggestions out there on a comparable topper that is truly latex?

Sleeplikeabear seems to have the only VERY soft latex toppers for sale and their price seems fair. But they are Talatech, not natural latex (they are blended).  If you want a bit firmer latex topper and 100% natural Talalay, then you can try rockymountainmattress or sleepez.

I still see the talalay at rockymountain.  They have the best deal on 100% natural by Latex International that I have found, if you want 24 or 32 ILD talalay.  They have dunlop as well.  Cheaper is foambymail, but I  am less sure about the quality there.

Jimsocal:  sleeplikeabear now carries 20 ILD in natural talalay.  But is expensive.  They have softer blends as well.  I am tempted to buy the 19ILD blend, because that is about what I think I could use.

Sandman, I didn't see the "natural" on the Rockymountain page describing Talalay. I see now that it does say "100% Natural". I could have sworn, though, that a coupla months back, they had both 100% Natural and Blended and that the 100% Natural was in bold...

Memory foam is probably around 12-15ILD. The only thing I have seen that soft in 1" latex is at SLAB in Talatech or Celsion.  Let us know how the 1" of queen memory foam works for you.

Okay, so are benchmarks are a bit different.  I was comparing it to blended Talatech latex.   I am not sure what foam would be built into the top of an 8 year old Serta.  If it is PU, then I would agree that the Celsion would probably be cooler.  However, if the Serta is pretty firm with little foam on top, then I would have thought that would have been reasonably cool already.

The real test would be for you to put try a blended latex or 100% natural latex topper, and see if the Celsion is cooler than that.  But, if it is working for you, that is great....

I bought an eastern king 2" celsion topper at sleeplikeabear.com. That's a pricey model but they also sell LI Talatech 1" queen toppers in ILD's in:

Firmness Full range from Extra Plush to Extra Firm (14 ILD, 19 ILD, 24 ILD, 28 ILD, 32 ILD, 36 ILD, 40 ILD, 44 ILD)

Starting @ $172 and adding $15 for the 40ILD and 44ILD versions.

Mine came with free shipping, I did pay $466 though!
