Yes Jim, I agree that the firmness labels the different companies use are confusing! My "medium" topper came from Foam Sweet Foam. I believe their rating system is: Soft = 20-23 ILD, Medium=24-28, Firm= 29-34 and Extra Firm=35-42. My piece has a "medium" sticker on the side....so who knows? All of their latex is the 100% natural which some say is a bit more supportive than the blended. I notice that SleepEZ calls 32 ILD "medium" so it's confusing. My original mattress top layer is "32" and felt quite firm to me so that's why I went one step down for the topper. I figure that I kind of got what Flobeds uses for the soft top layer on all their mattresses.
And you're sure this is Talalay? Those numbers reflect what one would expect from Dunlop process, not Talalay process.
In the interest of completeness, I would like to add one company:
FOAMSWEETFOAM
Natural Plus Special. Three layers of full 3 inch ( 9 inches) plus cotton and wool cover for a total of 10 inches. 100% Natural talalay, 30 year warranty. Choose from 4 firmness levels of your choice. Cost = $1599....
Similar to you, my Gardner Mattress all latex mattress was too firm after I had already done one exchange from their "medium" latex bed. Since I weigh 260 lbs I decided to top off my too firm mattress with another 3 inches of "medium"--24-28 ILD from FoamSweetFoam. I went with them for the 100% natural Latex International product which some said was a bit firmer than the blend. So far I am very happy with my puchase. It's soft but still quite supportive over the firmer base layers I already had. I wanted that "plush" feeling without it being too soft and sagging. I might have been able to get away with only 2 inches but didn't find a source I trusted at the right price. The FSF price for 3 inch toppers is $400. which includes shipping and a 30 year warranty. Sometimes you get what you pay for.
All I can say is that FoamSweetFoam advertises ONLY 100% natural Talalay latex from LI. In fact, they go so far as to "not recommend" dunlop, though they say the "blended talalay" is a good product also. It appears there is no set standard as to what "soft, medium, firm, and extra firm" are supposed to be. Each company seems to pick their own ILD ranges as to how they classify the latex....

You have to look a the cost of the mattress cover and the return policy as well. The cost of the wool filled covers are pretty expensive, I believe around $250-350 (depending in part if you want organic). 100% naturual will cost more than blended talalay or dunlop.
Flobeds has a great exchange and return policy, and more options in firmness to choose from. It comes with a nice cover too. Sleepez, foamsweetfoam, and sleeplikeabear have various return and exchange policies as well. Sleepez and foamsweetfoam will come with a nice cover.
Having said that, rockymountainmattress is a good deal for the 2 and 3" pieces, but you cannot return them. I have purchased from them and the quality is good. My pieces are actually slightly thicker than they were suppose to be. They don't have many options for firmness, but it is possible if you call them you can get some different...
For those that have followed my story, I recently purchased a vzone Flobed with blended latex. I was about 80-90% happy with it, but I did have more heat issues than I use to on an innerspring, and I did not find an all latex bed totally satisfying. Why not totally satisfying? Hard to say for sure, I think a prefer a slightly plusher feel than all latex provides. However, the vzone is great for reducing pressure points, since you can adjust the firmness of the hips and shoulder (and other) areas seperately.
Anyway, a friend of mine recently bought a Sealy Reserve cushion firm. He did not really like it, and went back to to his old mattress after just a few days. He could not return the Sealy (he could exchange but once burned...). So, I made a decision to buy it from him at a discount, return the Flobed, and see if I...
I was considering ordering from sleepez myself and have actually spoken with shawn a couple of times. Looking at the latex you received, I would be very disappointed. In fact I would be on the phone looking for a refund.
Suffice it to say that I am "removing" sleepez from my list. I would definately call and let them know of the quality (of lack thereof) you received. I read in a few threads that foam sweet foam has a good product and fair pricing, and they are within driving distance from me so my wife and I may see them this weekend. If we do make a purchase, I will post a follow-up to let you know of my experience.
I was also considering savvyrest, and may still try their offerings, but their pricing seems a bit high (I assume if it is because they have a network...
