Thanks for the update. Man, I hate waiting that long for anything!

Can you tell me which topper you bought and how it feels? I am considering buying their Talatech 14ILD but wonder if it provides ANY support in that ILD?

Questions re platform for latex, springs under latex, etc. - please give your opinions - jimsocal

Okay, my mattress is just not working out for me and I'm re-thinking it all. My recent trip to my sister's home where I slept on a "regular" mattress for 2 nights and woke up with NO back pain, is making me realize I need to make changes. (I discount the theory that it was better just because I was "on vacation" because actually it was a stressful situation.)

I'm going "back to basics", trying to think outside the box springs.( I know - bad pun.cheeky) Especially those of you who have had or do have springs under your latex, please opine:

1) What is the best platform for a latex+springs mattress in your opinions?

Currently I am using a Sealy box springs (about 8 years old I think) which is made with some more-or-less heavy gauge wire on...

I didn't mean to scare you off of Dunlop, just wanted you to be aware of it's firmness.  I believe it really is for heavier people.  But you will be replacing regular foam like Jim did in less than a year I believe.  Look for his postings on foam under "Highlighted Threads" at the top of the forum, Jims Newbie mattress or something like that.   I suggest you read that, he has used many different foams, and latex, and springs.  The only time I used foam was in a Sealy Trueform, (like TP) and that failed in less than 6 months for me.

I also think if you are picky on latex and want the "best of the USA" then Latex International is the best IMHO, and only MHO.  I have never tried FBM, some people love it and...

Jim, I think the 14ILD would go flat in no time.  I have the Brylane Home which is 1" Dunlopillo blended talalay and I think it is 18ILD (mine anyway).  This goes flat when I lay on it, so I don't think it does much for you.  I know Lynn likes hers, but she is thin in comparison to me, so consider how much you weigh first.  I still think a fluffy wool topper will help your back.

Leo, I have a 2" wool topper already. Sometimes I use it and sometimes I feel it causes lower back pain due to no support.

I'm thinking that surely a Talatech 14ILD will provide more support than a fluffy wool topper. Of course, I have been wrong before and I could be wrong again. But I'd like to try...

Jim, maybe your wool pad is more densely packed then my wool on top mattress pad, it looks like sheepskin rugs.  Of course mine will be going flat in time I am sure.  But yours is inside the cotton right?

Maybe you are right and the soft latex (if only 1") will fill in the small of your back for more comfort.  You got to keep...

I felt the same way about my flobeds mattress, when I tried one.

It felt like it was pushing back too much and would not let my body relax. I sent it back, got a refund, no problem.

What I finally realized for myself - some people are the same way - is that I need SPRINGS - or "coils" as the industry terms them - under my body. You might be like me in that respect.

But before you decide to re- do your whole mattress which you have a lot of $ invested in, try this:

Try a 1" or so layer of super soft latex. I'm going to recommend that you buy 1" of...

I might also through the 19 ILD Talatech into your choices, and compromise between soft and medium.  I worry a bit that the 14 would be too much like memory foam.  I have not tried 14 blended, but I did try 15 Celsion/latex once and it seemed like it would not provide a lot of support.

In terms of box spring, I don't have the expertise to really opine.  My gut instinct is that most of the newer box springs just provide a firm platform and don't make much difference.  Maybe on the upper end innersprings with "real" springs in the box springs it does make a difference.

On the springs themselves, I guess your first decision will have to be pocketed coils vs. interlaced.  If I recall your description of your sister's mattress correctly, I think that was probably interlaced.   I worry a little bit...

I recently bought 1" of 19ILD blended talalay from SLAB.  Took slightly under 2 weeks to get.

It is pretty nice, but the 1" of 100% natural from RMM seems a little nicer.  The SLAB has a definite glue seem, but I put it on the side I don't sleep so not an issue for me.  Don't think I would feel it anyway.   100% natual seems a little nicer (less synthetic - no surprise) than the blended, maybe in part because it is an end piece that is smooth on one side.  The holes seem a little bigger and more definited on the 100% natural as well.  I don't think any of this means much in terms of performance.

As expected, the 19 feels a bit softer than the 24, but more supportive than the piece of memory foam I replaced it with.  Last couple of...

Leo — Forgot to add that we are early middle aged with noticeably more aches and pains the past several years. That's why I'm agonizing over exactly which components to use in this DIY mattress. Been reading on this site pretty voraciously for several weeks now and it's helped immensely.

jimsocal — You're right, LI definitely pours it on with the marketing, don't they? They claim superiority to the European and Asian imports, with "very stringent durability testing to compare its latex to competitive materials". Hmmmm.

Budgy — Why do you believe all-natural Talalay to be superior to blended Talalay (like LI's Talatech)?

OK, I've been lurking for awhile and am about to pull the trigger on building my own mattress. But I am very indecisive and would greatly appreciate input from all of you that have experience with latex.

I am building a 12" Eastern King mattress to be placed upon a 14" solid platform bed frame. I've spent hours reading on this forum and researching assorted options with various online vendors. I've come to the following conclusions thus far.

#1 — I think I'll take a shot at latex (though I must confess I've been very tempted to try to recreate the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme after my wife and I tried one at a mattress store a few weeks ago and she really liked it). I'm drawn by fact that good quality latex mattress components seem to last a LONG time.

#2 — I want...
