Re: Tweaking my toppers again / mattress surgery - Catherine

Haven't yet seen the mattress my friend is selling (she's been ill).

I stopped in at Jamestown Mattress this afternoon, and found the visit sort of useful and sort of frustrating.

I tried out one of the pocket-coil beds: the "Majestic Dream deluxe plush pocket coil w/2" latex/foam euro top (one-sided)." I asked the salesman about the coil gauge and about the description as "Luraflex" (because I thought "Lura-Flex" referred only to Leggett & Platt's open-offset coils). He said there's a Luraflex pocket-coil spring, too. (I'm still skeptical, because I can't find a single reference to Lura-Flex pocket coils on the Internet, and every instance of "Lura-Flex" I find refers to L&P's offset springs [PDF], but whatever). According to the spec sheet the salesman gave me, the gauge is 14 (matches what's on Jamestown's website). The salesman did...

You suggest that we buy a simmons non pillow top mattress and then add latex toppers . It seems to me that if the underlying structure of the mattresses is collapsable because it is composed of polyeurethane , then won't the mattress soon sag even with the latex toppers ?

You can put lipstick on a pig....

Not Jim, but the suggestion is not just to not buy a pillowtop. It's to buy a good quality FIRM mattress with a mimimum of foam padding in the top, then add whatever topper you like. To me, this is the most sensible and economical (if economics are a concern) solution. I did just that, and am very happy with the results. Yes, my firm innerspring mattress will eventually sag...

Without taking up space with too much copying - I'm thrilled to have this much information and get this going

megalops, I agree with you and having been researching this for months I totally agree.  I still like the FloBeds, but when I go testing mattresses I can take my list and hopefully get some idea of price comparison for what is inside.  A few on my short list are similar.

This is why I am looking at latex mattresses - - NOT the S brands and this is why I was surprosed when i discovered that S&F had a latex that has cashmere in the cover etc/  I'm apparently more tired than I thought.   Yes I am aware that S&F is owned by Sealy -...

Normally this occurs from sleeping hot and sweating.  When you sweat on a memory foam mattress, it gets absorbed and sinks to the bottom.  Oftentimes there isnt enough of circulation allow it to dry and it gets moldy, this is well known about memory foam mattresses.  What should of happened when you purchased the mattress was that a salesman should of tried to persuade you to purchase a mattress protector, such as Protect A Bed which is a waterproof yet breathable mattress guard.  Now that this has occurred to you, 99.9% of mattress companies will deny ALL of your warranty claims due to soiling and not properly protecting your investment.  When you buy a new mattress, the 80 bucks for the protector is a must if you ever plan on wanting to have a warranty.  Sorry I couldnt give you better news.

I really hate you had a very difficult time shopping for a mattress, but I can add some advice for comparison shopping to make it a little more simple. If you decided you liked a model at one store then all you need to do is ask for a copy of the specs for that mattress and then go comparison shopping with the spec sheet. The other retailers should be able to show you the same mattress with a different name and different cover if they carry that model. If not they will have something very close or similar. Get Coil type (Pocketed, offset, bonnell, etc..), number of coils, gauge of wire and number of turns in the coil. The lower the number of the guage of wire the thicker the wire and the firmer the coil. The more turns or rotations in the coil the more durable the spring...

I would strongly suggest that you do a lot more research re: finding a decent mattress! (I also agree about avoiding the pillowtops - they get squishy quickly and you sink into the "valley"...it will really aggravate your back then).  I bought a firm Serta several years ago and w/in 2 months it was sagging.  I exchanged two times and each mattress began sagging very quickly.  I have since learned (via all of these forums) to avoid the "3 S's" (I guess that means Serta, Simmons and Sealy plus a lot of folks are not gung ho on Stearns and Foster).  My latest purchase was a sleep by numbers bed since our daugher & son-in-law have them and their guest room mattress was very comfortable.  Another mistake (and $1,200 down the drain).  I'm always having to pump air into it (if you want to pay $159 they'll send someone out...

Catherine,

Thanks so much for your reply. I hope you're having some luck in figuring out a comfortable mattress for yourself!

I've found it difficult to get detailed information on Sealy's "CoreSupport Center with Memory Foam". I, too, think it's a little suspicious that memory foam would be used as part of the support, as opposed to just a comfort layer. (And I love your image of miniature Power Rangers inside the mattress. Gotta love the promotional hype!)

I'm still undecided but am now leaning toward a plush (possibly pillowtop) Simmons at Macy's. My current purchase was definitely too firm, and while the Simmons has memory foam, it's only part of the comfort layer. Macy's versions also have additional lumbar support that Sleep Train's don't, so I'm hoping that will help with the lower back pain I was experiencing. And since Macy's has a...

New Sealy Posturpedic causing back pain - StephanieP

My last mattress (Sealy Posturepedic Montreaux – Firm?) lasted me about 11 years with no problems. Little did I know how much mattresses had changed and that more research would have been beneficial before my recent purchase.

When the one mentioned above began uncomfortably sagging, I began my search with Sealy Posturepedic since it had served me well in the past. I went to Sleep Train (a primary mattress retailer in the SF Bay Area) and tried a number of their options – spent quite a bit of time on each one with a very patient, helpful salesperson. Without knowing what each was when I lay on it, I found I liked the firm best, even as a side sleeper. It felt as if my lower body was better supported. (Though, in hindsight, this may have more to do with memory foam than not being firm enough…?) We...

DIY latex mattress results - way2sleepy

Thanks to everyone who's posted about their latex topper and mattress experiences, as well as opinions on different vendors.  I have now completed my own DIY latex mattress setup and thought I'd post my experiences.  About 6 years ago, I bought a twin extra-long 3" 100% natural Talalay topper from Foamsweetfoam.com.  (At the time, they were selling toppers--now, they don't.)  I bought mine for about $150, because it had some damage to it.  The damage wasn't anything I couldn't live with--a few tears, some dirt, etc.  I brushed it off, put it under a fitted sheet, and placed it on top of a way-too-hard (but very good) new Simmons Beautyrest mattress.  When I bought the topper, I was told it was "medium" in firmness and what most people bought.  I've used this setup for the past 6 years or so but found myself growing increasingly uncomfortable (probably age--late 50s, normal...
