I think you are making this more complicated than it needs to be. Women have curves and aren't as heavy as men are, so need more "cush" for comfort. Your bed has good "bones", or springs, and all you probably need to do is create a topper system that works for her and makes her side softer. Horsehair has no rebound,or bounce, that is why it feels hard once you get in it and settled. Foams are all different in their amount of rebound and and sink. Memory foam has no rebound either, but it does have sink...it sinks in where you are the heaviest, and cradles the body. Latex has lots of rebound and less sink...so they have many different ILD's. P/U foam is cheaper and often has a good sink:rebound ratio...but it won't last as long. Does not mean it isn't worth trying.

I think 3" inches of 24 ILD will be too soft, and I can't even imagine sleeping comfortably on 44 ILD.

Sleeplikeabear has a wide selection of thickness and ILDs, but a bit more expensive. They have blended or 100%. They have a 30 day return policy, but you will lose a bit on shipping and restocking. Sleepez also is a place to try, but they charge $49 shipping.
I think...

This is one more chapter of "I have to laugh."
My current direction is to pick out and buy either a Simmons World Class or Sealy Reserve in plush, because in reviewing all my misadventures back 4-5 years of "new mattress"... they have all been either firm or on the firm side of plush.... not accommodating my side sleep... wake up in pain.
So I track down a "scuff and mark" wholesaling mattress store selling all the S brands and a pretty wide selection through Craigslist and drive 30 miles out to the Burbs of Atlanta.
Most of their product is in stacks in their warehouse with broken AC.. doors open, at least 90 degrees. The owner son pulls what you want to lay on down off the stack and you lie on it on the...

Since the 6 inch exeperiment wasn't very encouraging... the the thought of starting yet another random walk with several different densities and thicknesses and no assurance of any progress scared me out of major DIY for now.
I am back to tweaking the comfort layer, which I deem the most critical part of the equation.
With low back (lumbar, strain 15 years ago but only recently manifesting) and being both a side and back sleeper, I...

We are moving to a king sized bed. We are 165lbs and 115lbs. Need a king because we wake each other up with even the slightest touch. We have a select comfort now and we both keep it at it's firmest. Still get some backaches, but that could be from posture, exercise, etc - not necessarily the bed. So I think we would be fine with ye old firm mattress with a topper on my side. :)
We don't want to waste money as mattresses are supposed to last for 10 years. On the...

If you're still shopping, you could look at Keetsa at 69 Mercer in Soho. They sell an innerspring mattress that uses latex comfort layers instead of P/U foam, as well as several memory foam models. I've never been in but they look like good products on the website, and aren't too outrageously priced.

The only thing I cannot vouch for is it's longevity. It seems like most...

This is the one I'm looking at, It's not a Serta as first described. The reviews are very positive, I just read every one. I'm thinking I need the soft bed.
Also, I am 180lbs, side sleeper, use 1 flat pillow and 1 goose down pillow.
ETA: I have another question on the same topic...do I want to use my existing box spring for a foam mattress or use the coil mattress as the foundation then the foam mattress on top? I don't want the middle to sag over time if there's not enough support with a box spring....
