Re: Getting rid of a Hastens bed - Kait

Rosstamon;

I think you are making this more complicated than it needs to be.  Women have curves and aren't as heavy as men are, so need more "cush" for comfort.  Your bed has good "bones", or springs, and all you probably need to do is create a topper system that works for her and makes her side softer.  Horsehair has no rebound,or bounce, that is why it feels hard once you get in it and settled.  Foams are all different in their amount of rebound and and sink.  Memory foam has no rebound either, but it does have sink...it sinks in where you are the heaviest, and cradles the body.  Latex has lots of rebound and less sink...so they have many different ILD's.  P/U foam is cheaper and often has a good sink:rebound ratio...but it won't last as long.  Does not mean it isn't worth trying.

Re: Latex firmness selection - KimberlyH

I am wondering why those are your only choices.  I am close to 6" tall, weigh >250 lbs., I have three layers of 36 ILD latex, and I find this to be very firm.  Then I have a 2" convoluted topper over those three layers.  Personally I would go with M/F/F which in Sleepez terms is 32/38/38 ish.  My husband, who weighs 180 and sleeps in every position, has this on his side of the bed, and it's firm and supportive.

I think 3" inches of 24 ILD will be too soft, and I can't even imagine sleeping comfortably on 44 ILD.

If your problem is the underlying foam in the mattress, then it might be hard to solve.  32 is reasonably firm, so you may want to try that.  Rockymountainmattress has pretty good prices on 32 ILD 100% natural talalay Latex International (I think you can find a code for 5% off as well, but they do NOT take returns).  They have 24ILD as well in the talalay.  They also have dunlop in lower ILDS than the talalay, but dunlop tends to be a bit firmer.  Most seem to prefer the talalay, especially on the top layer.

Sleeplikeabear has a wide selection of thickness and ILDs, but a bit more expensive.   They have blended or 100%.  They have a 30 day return policy, but you will lose a bit on shipping and restocking.  Sleepez also is a place to try, but they charge $49 shipping.

Sandman, thanks for the continued support.

This is one more chapter of "I have to laugh."

My current direction is to pick out and buy either a Simmons World Class or Sealy Reserve in plush, because in reviewing all my misadventures back 4-5 years of "new mattress"... they have all been either firm or on the firm side of plush.... not accommodating my side sleep... wake up in pain.

So I track down a "scuff and mark" wholesaling mattress store selling all the S brands and a pretty wide selection through Craigslist and drive 30 miles out to the Burbs of Atlanta.

Most of their product is in stacks in their warehouse with broken AC.. doors open, at least 90 degrees.  The owner son pulls what you want to lay on down off the stack and you lie on it on the...

Thanks Sandman.  The 1 inch from FBM is at least a year, I believe the 2" from FBM at least two years.  The 2" really feels firm, the 1" noticeably softer.  The formation holes on the 2" did not go all the way through... so at least 3/4 inch of the 2 inches was solid....  adding perceived density and firmness.  Is that far enough back to be iffy?

Since the 6 inch exeperiment wasn't very encouraging... the the thought of starting yet another random walk with several different densities and thicknesses and no assurance of any progress scared me out of major DIY for now.

I am back to tweaking the comfort layer, which I deem the most critical part of the equation.

With low back (lumbar, strain 15 years ago but only recently manifesting) and being both a side and back sleeper, I...

Please help with mattress selection - need bigger bed, firm, under $1500, no surgery - biggerbed

Hello.  I'm been reading the forums and I'm following on a lot of things like we don't want to get a soft top because it's better to just get it separately.  But I'm lacking on ideas for what mattress to buy if we are looking for innerspring without having to do surgery.

We are moving to a king sized bed.  We are 165lbs and 115lbs.  Need a king because we wake each other up with even the slightest touch.  We have a select comfort now and we both keep it at it's firmest.  Still get some backaches, but that could be from posture, exercise, etc - not necessarily the bed.  So I think we would be fine with ye old firm mattress with a topper on my side.  :)

We don't want to waste money as mattresses are supposed to last for 10 years.  On the...

InsoManiac, thanks for the tip, I'll swing by ABC and check out their mattresses. Where else in NYC would have a diverse selection other than the major dept. stores and Sleepys?

I'm guessing all the foam mattresses will be beyond my budget.

If you're still shopping, you could look at Keetsa at 69 Mercer in Soho. They sell an innerspring mattress that uses latex comfort layers instead of P/U foam, as well as several memory foam models. I've never been in but they look like good products on the website, and aren't too outrageously priced.

I can't comment on the Sears mattress or their customer service, but I did recently purchase an Overstock select-a-firmness 11-inch memory foam mattress in soft.  My husband and I both love it (we actually got 2 twin xls pushed together to form a King so that we could have them on separate Ergomotion adjustable bases).  Get the soft - it is still VERY firm.  Probably the firmest bed I have ever slept on, and I like a firm mattress. LOL  We've had the mattresses about a month and are very happy.  I haven't noticed that it sleeps hot, either, which is a relief.  We've had a few hot nights still here (even in SD) and I am still just as comfortable as I was on our old mattress.   And I tend to sleep hot.

The only thing I cannot vouch for is it's longevity.  It seems like most...

Just bought a new mattress from SEARS and I hate it - wiiztec

I suppose this is my own fault for rushing into it but after going through 2 cheap air mattresses that lasted less than a week I didn't want to continue wasting money. The new mattress I bought is a twin size sertapedic and I can feel the springs when I sit on it almost as bad as I could with my 3 year old sunken in mattress with broken springs, the store model did not feel like that. On top of that I think the salesman may have lied to me about the warrenty, I specifically asked if spills and not using a bed frame would void the warranty and he said it wouldn't but when I got the mattress there was no documentation about any SEARS warranty just a booklet about a Serta warranty that stated that spills and not using a proper bed frame would void the warranty.

This is the one I'm looking at, It's not a Serta as first described.  The reviews are very positive, I just read every one.  I'm thinking I need the soft bed.

Also, I am 180lbs, side sleeper, use 1 flat pillow and 1 goose down pillow.

ETA:  I have another question on the same topic...do I want to use my existing box spring for a foam mattress or use the coil mattress as the foundation then the foam mattress on top?  I don't want the middle to sag over time if there's not enough support with a box spring....
