Re: Back pain starting up again with new latex mattress - KimberlyH

Are you using the foundation that comes with the Sleep Science latex mattress?  By most accounts it's a piece of crap, and if you're using it, you might try changing out the foundation.

Also, keep in mind that with all the buzz about latex, people seem to expect it to solve all our back problems.  It doesn't.  It's one piece of a program of back pain relief, but it can't cure everything.

I've had horrific back and hip pain, and the Flobeds latex mattress has gone a great way towards helping me.  Some days, the time I spend lying on my bed is the only time my back isn't aching.  I'm a side sleeper too, and I have a very firm mattress (3 layers of 36 ILD under the convoluted topper).  It still has enough give to provide good pressure relief.

In the last 10 months i have owned and returned

2 Costcto Foam mattresses by Sleep Science, these are the cheap version of tempurpedic, problem was sleeps way too hot for me (whereever your body contacts the mattress, it is too warm)

2 Tempurpedics, Rhapsody and Bellafina...in both cases too firm, heat issues not as bad but there, just wasnt comfortable

2 hotel mattresses (over a year ago) both thru serta, biggest mistake was returning the hampton suites mattress, it was the best

right now i have a serta perfect day, $2200 ca king, sleeps warm and starting to get back pain so i am about to return it and keep the costco/sleep science LATEX mattress, as that is the best of all...although i am tempted to get a 4...

For static equilibrium the support must push up at each point as the body weight pushes down! - shovel99

The force exerted by your "body at rest" ... downward at each point along the contuinuum of your spine must be counterbalanced by the collective force along the body "pushing upward" by the mattress.   The springs in the mattress or the foam acting like a million little springs... are being compressed some linear amount equal to some force in lb ft or inches so that the total displacement of the springs x lb per inch = your weight.

If those areas arent beefed up, they will sag.  The mattress designers problem is that we are eached shaped and weigh differently, and some lie on side or back.

The biggest issues come from overall weight.. and then side or back.

A heavier person needs either stiffer springs or more of them, etc. or will sink to where you will feel a sag.

Back pain starting up again with new latex mattress - Q119
Aug 15, 2010 4:11 PM
I have had  the Costco Sleep Science latex since May. It was a bit too firm, so after some trial and error, I now have the convoluted latex topper from Flobeds, and a CuddleBed mattress cover. My lower back pain has started again, which I was experiencing with my s-brand mattress after sleeping in the deep middle well. Before we bought this current mattress, I built up the middle of my s-brand mattress to get rid of the center depression. It relieved my back pain. The pain just started back up within the last 3-4 weeks. I've had the Flobeds topper for about 2 months. I have tried both sides of the Costco latex. Back hurts worse with the soft side up, but still isn't completely gone with the firmer side up. And, It's too firm, even with the topper, when I have the firm side up.

There may be a difference in quality. Although, I have only heard positive things about the Legget and Platt S-Cape, Ergo-motion 400, and Tempurpedic Ergo. I have seen complaints about the one that comes with the Sleep Science beds from Costco.

But, there should be no health risk from one to another, unless they are all unhealthy. They all appear to work the same way.

WHY IS COSTCO SELLING THIS JUNK FOUNDATION?

WHY IS SLEEP SCIENCE CONTINUING TO SELL THIS JUNK FOUNDATION?

WHAT SORT OF POLICY IS THIS?

I HAVE TO DIFFER WITH YOU.

THE SOFT SIDE OF THIS SLEEP SCIENCE LATEX MATTRESS SOLD BY COSTCO IS VERY SOFT NOT "FIRM AT ALL LIKE YOU CLAIM IT TO BE.

I just wanted to add my experience to the pile here.  We purchased the Eastern King Costco Sleep Science 10" latex mattress w/ foundation and it arrived about a month ago.  Overall, I have been very pleased with the mattress.  I am a very heavy person and I was getting hip pain from side-sleeping.  I would have to wake and turn over multiple times per night.  In the last month, I can't remember waking before the alarm went off in the morning.  It's so nice! We did not flip, so I assume we still have the soft side up.  I was concerned that with my weight 10" would not be enough or that this particular mattress would be too soft.  I have found neither to be the case.  My 155-pound husband also likes the mattress (but he can sleep on almost anything).

Roy,

We just purchased the Hemnes king frame and the Sultan Laxeby slatted foundation for our 10" Sleep Science latex mattress.  It's a bear to put together, but I really like the Laxeby.  It's got more "spring" than the standard flat slats.  It's also got adjustable firmness levels.  So far, I am really happy with the choice of the pricer Laxeby slats.

The IKEA guy tried to convince me that their latex was 100% natural and that I didn't need 10".  I am not sure I agree with him.

I forgot about the weight issue.  I weigh a lot more than you and have no concerns about the ability of the frame and slats to hold my weight.

I'm not sure why they continue to produce such a shotty product either.  I seem to recall someone on this board saying they called Sleep Science regarding the foundation issues, and SS instructed them to put a peice of plywood on top of the foundation.  This doesn't seem like a reasonable solution, especially when you paid almost $2,000 for the product.

I'm seriously considering the Sam's Club latex mattress now.  It sounds like they use higher quality latex (Latexco?), has a better cover that includes wool, and has 5 zones (which I hear is best for side sleepers).  If I go this route, I will share my experience.  Thanks for all of the adivce, though.

First off, I am new to this forum.  A huge thanks to everyone that contributes here, as most of the information is very informative.  Here's my story:

Had a cheap (no name) mattress given to me about 5 - 6 years ago.  It is labeled as a firm cushion top.  Decided to upgrad to a king size bed, so I bought a Denver Mattress (the name/model slips my mind) for around $800.  It was only 1 - 2 weeks old before it starting sagging in the middle and I was waking up in the middle of the night with numb hands/arms.  Needless to say, I returned it.

Second mattress:  took the advice of many and went the Costco route.  Chose the Sealy Posturepedic Alanson (cheap, cushion firm).  It was supportive, however, felt a little springy and uncomfortable after 3 - 4 weeks.  Sent...
