Re: Too-firm mattress causing back pain - exchange for plush mattress or get toppers? - sandman
Oct 29, 2010 8:18 AM
You are welcome.  Happy to try to help.

So, you have more back pain without the memory foam than with it?   Does it feel too firm with the memory foam or do you feel like your hips are sinking in too much?   You may want to try with just the memory foam and the mattress pad (no eggcrate) to see what that is like.  I would not go with more than 3" of the memory foam you have.  I am probably going to return the 2.5" of memory foam I have because it is too soft for my weight.  In part if may be due to the way the foam is made.  I am pretty sure I would not have a problem with 2.5" of Tempur-pedic foam.

So, I don't think I would buy anymore memory foam unless you plan to ditch the 3" you...

sandman which wool toppers do you have please.

This is the wool topper I bought at walmart.com.  I can't remember who makes it, but it seems okay.  They say 1.5", but I think more like 1".  They also have a 3" one is you are looking for something thicker and more of a breathable barrier.   I think you can return things if purchased on the walmart website, and they might have free shipping to a store near you.

I have not tried any others to really say how it compares.  I was also looking at the Gaiim (pretty good price and I think returnable) and Natura.  It is possible that the walmart one is a bit less flexible than the others, so it might affect the...

Looking for recommendations on a waterproof mattress protector - fvanpelt
Sep 27, 2010 7:40 AM
Hello,

My wife and I purchased a Queen 12" memory foam mattress from Dynasty Mattress on amazon.com, we just have it on the floor for now.

Our 16 month old daughter will sleep in our bed on occasion, so we bought a waterproof mattress cover from Walmart to protect it. It made the mattress very stiff and slept extremely hot, so we pulled that off so we could at least enjoy our new mattress, knowing full well what would eventually happen. Well the inevitable happened last night, our daughter fell asleep in our bed and overflowed her diaper.

I could use some help in selecting a cover that will work for my family and I am hoping to avoid the trial and error process that I am faced with now.

We are looking for a comfortable, breathable, waterproof mattress protector for a...

Re: Mattresses for heavier people - gunman4440

Innerspring mattresses built buy most major manufacturers are designed for the "average person"  The springs are designed to be comfortable for the average person.  This means that the springs are not so soft that heavy people can completely compress them and that light people get some spring comfort with out the spring being un-movable.  Like wise the upholstrey is not so soft that a heavy person can wear it out in a few weeks and not so firm that a light person won't fee it to be rock hard.

If you are closer to one of the extremes you will find a poorer performing mattress.

When presented with some who has a high muscle mass - thus a higher weight to square foot ratio you cause a real problem for most types of mattresses.  I would have you look at a higher end latex mattress.  One...

Sorry, I see by my last posted reply that I didnt post it right so trying again!  Phoenix, I'm wondering who/where you finally bought your mattress layers from??  Can you exchange them at any time if you want to?   I am wanting to do the same as you did...building the layers but, not sure where/who to buy them from?!  I'm finding the whole mattress buying thing as stressful as buying a car and just wish I could be done but want to make sure I am getting the right fit the first time!  What size did you get and approx how much did it cost you?  Did you already have a foundation to put the...

I am getting to the point of being tired of looking at mattresses, and just want to pick one :)

I certainly understand that feeling :)

A couple of suggestions though to make it less tiresome ... and more "accurate".

First, I would use your experience at Sleepy's (and one or two other places) as a testing ground only. If you lay on a mattress that is too firm, then by knowing the stats of what you lay on you would be much closer to knowing what you need. This is why the latex bliss experience is helpful ... not because I would consider buying it. Make the first part of your search about knowing what fits you ... not deciding what to buy.

Second, make a list of several places that look promising and then call them first. Ask them some...

I read recently that the industry average gross margin was 48%. Mattresses are consistently at or near the highest margin in the furniture category. A mattress outlet owner or salesman that had a customer (or even better yet many customers) that didn't negotiate would be making plans for their next 5 star vacation or luxury car. At the very least never buy a mattress at the same time as you are trying them out in the store. Once you know what you like, go home (no matter how "good" their offer to buy "right now"), do some online research into prices and value, and then go back with a clear idea of how much you are willing to pay...

I was confused for a second when you mentioned a link to Sleepez in this thread until I realized that I had linked to the wrong place. The link was supposed to go to the Sams club mattress with 3" of 5 zoned talalay on top over 6" of HR foam. I didn't mean to recommend this but I just wanted to show you a mattress that was very similar but (IMO) superior to the insightful (3" latex over a thicker layer of foam) at a lower cost. The link in the other post is now fixed. Having said that the sleepez special (now it's linked correctly) would also be superior to the Insightful. It is a 3 layer 3 zoned mattress made from 100% natural Dunlop for 1295 so in the range of your budget.

Here are the pluses and minuses of 4 mattresses that are...

Better choices ... step by step - Phoenix

I have read so many different opinions here and seen so many different approaches and levels of success with finding sleeping solutions that I thought I would try to sort of "systematize" the process and add some of my thoughts to the mix. I realize that everything here is simply opinion but FWIW.

It seems to me that if you look at all the experiences here, there are really 5 main components to getting to "your" best decision.

These are 1. Initial feel, 2. comfort and pressure relief, 3. Spinal alignment and support, 4. quality and durability and 5. Price and value. Each of these areas will of course affect the others but you can eliminate some of the confusion in finding a mattress by knowing specifically what you are looking for in each of these areas and knowing why different materials and methods have different...

Walmart Spa Sensations vs Sams Club Night Therapy - livejamie

It seems like they sell these inexpensive yet high-quality memory foam mattresses that come vacuum-sealed in a cube that you open and then they expand to full size over a couple days.

It seems like the best bang for my buck mattress-wise.

Anybody familiar with either, or knows if one will be more comfortable than the other?

They almost seem like they could be the same brand.

Neither store have these in-store so I can't go down and try them.

Any help would be appreciated.
