Re: Can anyone recommend a good experience of 2" Sensus on a firm coil mattress? - sandman
Sep 1, 2010 2:20 PM
I called Overstock, and they could not tell me who makes the Sensus memory foam.  Some other websites that sell Sensus say it is made by Foamex.  It is possible they don't want to use their name at overstock, because they are undercutting the other retailers prices.  There has been some discussion that it comes from a company called Anatomic Global, but some have also said that Foamex supplies them (so maybe they are just a wholesaler).  I think it is possible that the overstock is made by someone else than Foamex or by a different process than when you bought it earlier.  Still, it is 5lb. density and reasonably good.

There is also 5lb. Aerus memory foam around made by Foamex, but I have only found in 2.5".   It would be interesting to try, but risky if it cannot be returned.  Cheaper at Sam's club, but you need a...

Have you tried them out?  The Eco rest sounds like it would be pretty firm, with just 6" of dunlop latex.  Personally I would prefer the Eco with 2" of added talalay on top.  But, I have not tried, so just an educated guess.

You can't have anything shipped to you?  If so, I would consider Flobeds, sleepez, foamsweetfoam which can be customized to your taste, exchange of layers if necessary to adjust firmness, returned if not happy.  They have 100% natural latex option and possibly all organic if that is what you want....

Technically some of these things come out during manufacturing, but you will never be completely rid of it.  You know, really I don't worry about these small things too much myself.  To me its just a bonus if something is certified to not have those materials...my only point is that small amounts of these toxins are absorbed by us transdermally every day and it is far more harmful than inert sulfur ash trapped inside other materials whether it be rubber or steel springs, we can however argue over semantics about the fact that iron ferrite has large amounts of sulfur inside it naturally and rubber does not.  Sulfur, phosphorus, and other elements are found in pretty much everything. Lead and mercury are present in most leafy greens...one could go crazy worrying about every single detail.

To be fair the Hastens beds also have removable pillowtops that can be...

The Eco Rest is going to be pretty firm.  But one thing I think to keep in mind with Natura is that they use more wool than most latex mattress producers and on the top of their mattresses they use a very nice wide and open stitch pattern, its quite luxurious.  This makes them a little bit softer than one might imagine with only a 6" firm latex core.  Both beds are good quality though.

Re: Looking for a non-toxic, PBDE-free, comfortable, durable mattress - budgy

There are many certified organic mattress makers that do not use chemical flame retardants....wool is used as the barrier....if someone was allergic to the wool some companies will allow you to buy the bed without wool with a doctors note.

Royal Pedic, Green Sleep, Natura, I believe Savvy Rest, Organic Pedic, and many others do not use these chemicals in their organic mattresses.

Strobel seems to be marketing hardcore just as much as the S brands....of course wool burns.....but it has a higher burning point than formaldehyde which is the FR of choice in most foams and polyester fibres.  The CFR 1633 regulations that have everyone in an upheaval are simply stating that to pass the fire test that there is a certain rate of heat release...not that a mattress literally be fireproofed.  Also the wool they lit on fire in their test is yarn being...

Thanks to all for your helpful responses. I went to The Natural Sleep Store in Denver the other day and was introduced to their own latex mattresses with organic cotton and wool. Their new line is Bella Sera, and it sounds equivalent to Savvy Rest--96% pure latex in three or four layers, covered with organic wool in an organic cotton casing with a zipper. It is cheaper than Savvy Rest. I guess the downside is that it is new and therefore doesn't have a track record. Here's a link: http://bellaseraorganicmattress.com/

I also tried the GreenSleep mattress at the store, and it was extremely comfortable. I like the idea of the dowel-on-polymer foundation. It is a very expensive mattress, though, and I don't know if it is worth the extra cost. Apparently it has silk as well as wool and cotton in the layers over the latex, and this helps...

Budgy,

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I am glad to hear that there are many good options out there for a cleaner, healthier bed. Jasmine mentioned that when she pressed some of the companies that make mattresses that purportedly meet the flammability requirements through wool, some of them admitted to using chemicals such as teflon, boric acid, and silica. I know that companies aren't required to disclose the composition of their products due to protection of trade secrets. So I worry that their claims may not be totally honest.

How trustworthy do you think the chemical flame retardant-free claims of the companies you mentioned are? Can you particularly recommend one or two that you think are on the high road and make a comfortable, durable product as well?

Thanks for the clarification about the CFR 1633 regulations regarding rate of heat...

Going in a few days to the 'big city' to try out.  Unfortunately, in all the shops, only a couple specific all natural latex models available to check out.  After that, ordering in through the supplier would be no different than ordering direct from a manufacturer i.e. pay the price and then hope/haggle with returns.  I want to avoid cross border shipments (I live in Canada), but have eyed a few national suppliers that could send.  But I'd 'really' like to check out first hand.  Failing that, interested in anyone has tried the Natura Eco Rest because I have found little comment to date.

Eco Rest - terra3

Any owners willing to share thoughts on this mattress?  In my area, 100% latex is limited to Natura products, with one also offering Green Line (?).  Wanting fairly firm with slight comfort on the surface, but firmness the most critical for a problematic spine/neck.  "Humming and hawing" between the Natura Eco Rest and Eco Haven, with a consideration of the Rest and adding a latex/wool topper if need be.

New to this option for mattresses as of the past couple of weeks.  This forum seemed like a good place to start.

thanks

New FloBed and Leggett and Platt Adjustable Foundation ... After 4 weeks - erinate
Sep 26, 2010 11:34 AM
I spent allot of $$$ over the last 10 years on inter spring mattresses, foundations and toppers.  Would be satisfied for a while then the issues would begin. We spent another Saturday afternoon looking at Interspring, Memory Foam, Latex, even drove over to a local Duxiana store.  Never considered purchasing a bed through the internet. After finding and reading through this website, I purchased the Deluxe Posture Flobed with the Natural Latex and an Eastern King Leggett and Platt Prodigy Adjustable bed.

My spouse and I prefer a firm feel.  Because the ordered bed was a Split King,  I was able to order the SuperFirm, over ExtraFirm, over Firm, with the latex topper.  My spouse ordered ExtraFirm, over Firm, over Medium with the latex topper.  (The Flobed website does have the SuperFirm / Natural Latex as an option but they do have it in stock).
