Re: Latex Mattress - KimberlyH

Well, if you want to keep it simple, then choose:

1. A company that offers a 100% natural latex mattress.  Both Flobeds and Sleepez do.

2. Here is the difference in the mattress covers:  Sleepez is a woven cover (you can specify organic cotton if you want) and the top is quilted with wool.  It seems sturdy.  Flobeds is an organic knit cotton cover quilted with wool at least on the top and sides - I'd have to check the bottom of mine to see if it has quilted wool on the bottom too.  The wool is an excellent feature - it will help keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.  There are no synthetic fire retardents in these covers.

3. Another difference between Flobeds and Sleepez is that the Flobeds mattress comes with a 2" convoluted latex topper in addition to...

Hi Alex,

I would trust your instincts and go with what you think would work.  Give it a good try and if it doesn't, get a refund. That's the great thing about Flobeds, and the main reason I chose them over Saavyrest or others. Even though I now like a fairly soft bed because I need it for pressure point and nerve problems, I also need really good lower back support. I went a lot firmer than recommended, and I did the unusual thing of putting a firm right under the first soft layer. You probably have read some other posts here of people who went very firm, even if they were lightweight.

I've slept on Dunlop beds (an original Sears one s a child, decades ago, another one as  a young adult, and then a very thin, very firm one for years before I got...

you mean a salesperson in WA said he designed the natura slatted system used in their slatted mattresses?  I honestly never knew it was someone other than the father/son who started the company as that was the first type of mattress they ever made back in 94'.

OMI is all 'natural' talalay right?  They actually tried to contact us a long time ago to carry their product....how would you compare the product to the Natura's you tried on the overall?

We also had Magniflex contact us to become a dealer....their product seems very confusing and very gimmicky, I really was not interested in it whatsoever.

If this Swiss Rest is what you mean then yes I have quite a bit of information about them.

They are one of a large "family" of websites (at least 20) that I came across often in different iterations in my research. I came to recognize them pretty quickly and kept adding to a long list of sites that was (sort of) the same so I wouldn't keep covering the same ground. At that time most of them hadn't attached the name "Swiss Rest" to their mattress (and I don't think most of them do even now). They have been around for quite a while and specialize in adjustable beds and "medical" applications although they sell to consumers as well. They are all in the electropedic "family" of businesses and to their credit, at least the bbb rating of this site is an A (don't know...

Better choices ... step by step - Phoenix

I have read so many different opinions here and seen so many different approaches and levels of success with finding sleeping solutions that I thought I would try to sort of "systematize" the process and add some of my thoughts to the mix. I realize that everything here is simply opinion but FWIW.

It seems to me that if you look at all the experiences here, there are really 5 main components to getting to "your" best decision.

These are 1. Initial feel, 2. comfort and pressure relief, 3. Spinal alignment and support, 4. quality and durability and 5. Price and value. Each of these areas will of course affect the others but you can eliminate some of the confusion in finding a mattress by knowing specifically what you are looking for in each of these areas and knowing why different materials and methods have different...

Well I just had a long conversation with Ken (the owner) which I must say was very interesting.

He just got them in and he believes that the topper is blended talalay but he read through all the information he had been given with me and none of it said for sure. He said that it did not feel like "slow recovery" latex. The information did use the same wording as the Nuform information but it didn't say anything about what was in it. They call it a "body pillow" (which is probably why it is under the rejuvenite brand). He is sending an email to Latex International to find out. He is carrying this topper because he says it is very nice and has a very nice cover. He usually deals with Radium and has had some problems over the years with LI but he thought this...

Bearing in mind that "softness" is very subjective, the Terra was one of the nicest and softest I lay on. It was very comfortable to me (and my other half) and both of us like soft or plush beds because of pressure issues. It sort of became a "baseline" in the search. I lay on several of the Natura beds as well and none of them came close to the Terra in terms of initial impression. One of the things I found ... and both of us are sensitive to pressure points ... was that beds with 2" of softer latex on top didn't cut it for us. Same holds true for the 3 one inch layers (as opposed to 1 3" layer) which was similar to the 2" tops in feel. What happens is that I tend to "go through" the 2" layer and the transition into the firmer...

I lay on the OMI terra bed and it was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately wonderful here meant insanely expensive. The other OMI beds I lay on were also very nice but I believe also overpriced and not as nice as the Terra. While I acknowledge that their level of "organicy" (if there is such a word) is probably higher than any other manufacturer, their price definately shows it.

I have done a lot of research into latex beds and I discovered that many smaller or medium size mattress manufacturers will sell direct to the public at prices lower even than Sleep EZ which in turn has lower prices than flo-beds and savvy rest. The problem with this is that most of them will make a custom bed for you but they do not have "layer exchanges" like Sleep EZ or Flo beds or savvy rest or foam sweet foam...

Purerest vs. Sleeptek/Naturally Organic vs. Another Dunlop manufacturer that I should be considering? - kirsti
Oct 26, 2010 8:05 AM
My husband and I are buying two mattresses--a queen for us and a twin as our second son's first "big boy" bed. We've considered a number of options and also sent away for a sample pack from Purerest, which consists of 4 pieces of latex rubber and a swatch of the fabric cover.

We live in Boston and have tried a number of locally available options including:

- OMI (hubby thought too soft, leading us to conclude we're dunlop people, not talalay)

- WJ Southard (bought a 6" dunlop for our oldest son; we're just not convinced of the purity based on what we've read online, which is why we're looking elsewhere this time around)

- Habitat Furnishings (hubby again didn't think it had adequate support)

- Natura World (not firm enough, again attributed to the Talalay topper)

Well I contacted SleepEZ and spoke with Shawn, Jeremy and Shawn's father who started the business.  Shawn's father was very knowledgeable (I mean he really knows his stuff).  He said that the flame test is looking more for the amount of heat supression vs not burning/no flames.  He said the wool chars when it burns, and it does burn, but the char creates a very strong insulation later that helps to deflect heat even better.  He continued on stating that when a flame is applied to wool from the top the wool does not burn like wood or cotton, rather it smoulders and creates a char layer that acts as the true heat insulator during a real fire.

Since I did not know if this was true or not I did some research and found this to be accurate.  While the strobel test shows wool burning,...
