My wife and I are out of whack to most as we abandoned innerspring mattresses over 22 years ago and bought a California King waterbed and mattress and we have slept happy ever since.  Over the years, as with most things, waterbed mattress design, engineering and materials have improved and continue to improve.  We bought our latest one almost four months ago - the "old" one was in perfect condition (after almost seven years) but we are older and wanted something 100% waveless and more firm.

As info, we spent four months researching ALL types, makes and models of innerspring and foam and latex just to see what was currently available and at the end of that process we agreed that a new waterbed mattress was the ONLY option - adjustable firmness, impossible to sag or develop body depressions, temperature adjustable and VERY less expensive than the...

cheap mattress - ga99
Jun 2, 2009 12:03 PM
I am looking at purchasing a cheap mattress to use for a couple of years. We had brought an expensive latex and could not sleep on it. We traded it in for a Sealy (the only other brand the place carried). It has been o.k. to sleep on but has indentions where we sleep. We are looking to sell our house and the stager has recommended we use a queen instead of the king. We were planning on buying a really nice organic queen mattress in a few years anyway, but cannot afford it now. So, we thought about buying a cheaper queen to use in the interim. Thoughts on a decent one for a few hundred. The one below is a $300 set at a small furniture store near buy. Thoughts as to how many springs or what I should look for?? I really do not want...

I'm going to recommend the Slumber 1 iCoil Mattress-In-A-Box from Wal-Mart. It's surprisingly way better than my old Sealy Posturpedic was when brand-new. The "iCoil" technology is supposed to be a new innovation that allows the coils to follow the curves of your anatomy, providing extra/less support where needed -- effectively keeping your spine perfectly aligned while you sleep. My experience, having slept on it for a few nights, is that it does what it promises. I can feel it pushing up against my lumbar region while allowing my hips to sink into the mattress just enough to keep my spine in place. To put it bluntly, I'm impressed! I never would've expected to find an intelligent mattress at Wal-Mart, but there you have it.

A side note: They also carry Slumber 1's Smart Base, which is an inexpensive...

I would rate it "medium-firm" on the firmness scale. I prefer softer mattresses, so I need a...

Pah, they're all gigantic rip-offs. My Sealy Posturpedic died after about two years...I managed to eek a few more years of life out of it via a rotating collection of toppers. The Big Name mattress makers can kiss my soon-to-be latex-ensconced arse. I am so through with them!...
Recomend a mattress/Latex topper please for a big guy. $1500 to spend. - nosleepforme

After reading this forum, I've decided I agree with the concept of buying a good mattress without any pillow top and soften it with a  Latex topper. I am 6ft 3in and weigh 250lbs and typically sleep on my side. I have tested various Simmons and Sealy beds at Macy's and have no real preference but do find the latex toppers I have layed on to be very comfortable. I do though only have $1500 to spend and would welcome any recommendations on what mattress/topper combination would be a good fit for me....
Help with new latex/foam mattress from Jamison - Cindy
Jun 6, 2009 7:27 AM
I've had my new Equalizer mattress from Jamison for three nights (which I know is a short time). It is composed of a 3" Talalay Latex (24 ILD) top over a 7" foam core. I bought the box that came with the mattress. I previously had a 10-year old Sealy Posturpedic innerspring mattress that was too hard for me as a side-sleeper.

My new mattress seems comfortable at first but I seem to sink too much, and I am waking up with lower back pain which I did not have before. I sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs. I am 5'6" and about 195 lbs.

I am not sure if the Talalay Latex is too soft, or if the problem is that I am sinking through to the foam core which is too hard.

At this point, I want to know what my options...
Re: Any experience with Simmons Beautyrest Black or Sealy Springfree? - shawnamuffin

DH and I tried a SpringFree for about half an hour at a local shop about a week ago. Very firm initial feel, which we liked, but all of the big S's latex mattresses seem to have PU foam in them or some kind of extra "cushion" on top that isn't latex at all. And their cores aren't usually latex, either. Maybe in a few years, the big S companies will truly go to latex, but for now, it seems like a ripoff. Latex is just a buzz-word for them right now....

I think you are on the right track. I took the top off my Sealy Posturepedic and replaced the 2.5" thick polyurethane with a 1" 32 ILD talalay topper. It was a good move. I went from hating my bed to loving it. I wrote a review and described the inside of my bed here: Sealy Posturepedic Reserve, Firm - Reserve, Queen size, Firm

I'm so glad I found this forum and have been learning a great deal.  Here's my situation and I can really need some help:  currently I and my husband are sleeping a futon mattress that's pretty much seen the end of its life and I have back pain.  I'm a side sleeper at 140 lb, he's a stomach sleeper and weighs 280 lb.  We have a firm inner spring mattress in the guest bedroom and have been sleeping on it.  I like it but since he comes to bed late I wake up every night around 1am when he craws into bed from all the motion ( which I don't get with the futon mattress).  The mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest ultra firm with pocketed coils.  I've been to 4-5 stores and tried Sealy Posturepedic, Tempurpedic, SpringFree latex, Stearns and Foster, Beauty Rest.  I'm getting confused with all the options. ...
