One of you guys wrote me some time back - in a post, not a message - something about how you would have recommended that I use springs under my foam. I did not bookmark that post and now I can't find it via the Search.
After sleeping on foam for the past year or so, with no springs, I am now convinced that I probably do need springs.
Just to update you, I bought an "M-grade" foam mattress from overnightmattress.com and slept on it for 4 months or so and returned it. For awhile it gave me the best sleep I had for ages, but then it seemed to "soften up" too much as foam tends to do. In fact, now that I mention that, someone here also mentioned to me their theory that it does not break down as one thinks. but rather... something or other, which I can't...

"Really, people do this? And really, people actually are interested in what the outcome is. Really? I thought it was bad enough I read through this. Please don't tell me you told anyone else except this forum what you do in your spare time. No offense, but seriously."
Yes, people do this and talk about it because they have limited funds to spend on mattresses and they value a good nights sleep and less back aches upon awakening. My king mattress started having a small crater on each side where my husband and I slept. WITH THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE EXAMPLE OF MEMBERS IN THIS FORUM, I cut open my Sealy Latex recently and removed the top layers of PU padding...about 5 in all with the top one sewn into the nice mattress cover. I then placed two egg crates purchased from a foam dealer which...

>> if I hate this, I'm out $660 (including the Overstock topper), I have a pile of foam, a knife, and I can order more foam. If I hate the store version I'm out $500 and I still am out $4,000 to store credit in a store where I hated their flagship product.
I couldn't agree more. That pretty much sums it up.
Good call giving it a month. Be sure and send us an update! I do think you may find that much MF up top might grow to be a bit uncomfortable after a week or so. I am curious to see what your wife has to say about it after the first week. My experience was similar to yours -- I was good with the LUX with a little something to soften it up. My wife really liked the memory foam at first, but after several days her back...

The problem is that the cheap PU foam most mattress companies use as filler in their mattresses breaks down relatively quickly. The "S" name companies are notoriously guilty of this practice. Anything with "pillow top" or "plush" in the description is likely to give you problems. If you really want to go with a major name mattress maker, get the model with the least amount of foam in it, usually a "firm" mattress, and purchase a topper(s) to make it comfy. When the topper(s) breaks down, it's easy to replace and far less expensive than having to buy a new mattress....

Okay so I was out near a few mattress stores yesterday and used the opportunity to compare a couple different setups. It was funny that at one place the regional manager was there doing sales training and I know he picked me as the victim that he would use as an example of how to make the sale. Anyways, that being said, he was really nice but too pushy for me.
I went in and told him exactly the type of mattress I am looking for, something in the area of plush-firm, and that I wanted to try some foam mattresses and then the comparable spring mattresses starting at most expensive going down.
Like I said he was very helpful and after trying all the foam mattresses, the one I liked the most was a support core with a few inches of memory foam on top of it, then about an...

Thanks for the reply. Thats good advice and I really appreciate it. Seems like picking a firm mattress is easier than choosing a plush or pillow top anyway.
So which of the major mattress manufacturers do you think has the best mattress?
And what alternative mattress makers do you recommend besides the 'S' makers?...

The theory on the egg crate is as follows:
First, I put the order in either just before or just after I found this page, so I knew a lot less than now. A prior link I found claimed to be very similar to the Sealy Tempurpedic Celebrity with this recipe. So I bought it, on the grounds that it was a $600 experiment to duplicate a $4500 mattress, and I would cheerfully start hacking it apart if I felt the need. Given that just buying hating and returning the Sealy would cost $500 it was an easy gamble.
Second, when we tried the Celebrity in the store, it claimed about 5" of memory, and we liked it. I expect I will need some better pad on top to not sleep too hot, but my wife loved it and I liked it. So it was a good starting point, and I...

Purchase sealy posturepedic king mattress 5 years ago. After about 2 years I had warranty problems. Large hill in center of mattress. Mattress firm said they would inspect my matterss for $60.00 .lso gave me a 10 page form to fill out. Every questiion was designed to proCosttect them. I suggest fyou fine another source for your mattress. My experience has been very negative. I am going to\ purchase from Costco sleep science celeste 14" on sale3 in september. .....

Yes, I got a standard. My bed is a full/double, not queen, so I'm sticking with standard pillows rather than queen or bigger. I think if I had two bigger (longer) pillows side by side, they'd both be hanging over the side of the bed slightly.
Firmer: I don't know if thicker would do it or not; maybe it would. I was thinking more along the lines of "less squooshy" (a little less give).
I decided to hold off on buying anymore...
