Re: MATTRESS SURGERY: performing a "foam-ectomy" on my Englander mattress - w/ photos - jimsocal

Not sure how tall the springs are... I am quite sure they are "standard" - all I have seen are about the same.
I am using a box, not really a box SPRING. I think it has a little spring action but is mostly just slats of wood - it's the old Sealy Fenway box spring from CostCo.
Yes, my sleep has been excellent 2 nights now, after the mattress surgery. Understand that I have had major arm, shoulder and back and neck problems for...

I'm going to pull back the curtains and show you the great and powerful "Oz", the Mattress Wizard, the behind-the-scenes look at what's inside your mattress. Most mattresses are the same, especially most S brand or major brand mattresses. What you are about to see here is not just an indictment of Englander but of the entire mattress industry. There is no great "Oz" at all, it's just a bunch of junk under a pretty looking exterior.
Okay, here we go:
We have not done this a bunch of times, so we're still getting the hang of it... It can be done more "neatly" and "nicely" but we're of the opinion that how it looks isn't all that important. No one sleeps on these mattresses but my wife and I. (Well, I HOPE that's the case, anyway...
) So no one is seeing it but us... well, and...

Guess what? Englander is no better than the S brands (imho)...
As you may know, I bought the Englander (Malibu Firm) only for the springs. I PLANNED to give it a "foam-ectomy", getting rid of the junky cheap foam. But I wanted to see how long it might be comfortable before I did surgery on it.
Well, after about 4 nights I determined that it was not good at all for my back.
So I did surgery on it tonight.
I'm going to adda link to or post pictures of the surgery in the near future, right here in this thread.
I did expect more from Englander...
I opened it up and was shocked to see that they had NO - ZERO - ZILCH!!! - good firm foam inside!
What it had was 3 layers of 7/16" very soft, white pu foam...

This US-Mattress website has a handy reference to the components of the Sealy/Simmons/Serta latex mattresses. Of course you have to figure out which mattress compares to the one you are looking at as they are all branded under different names. It looks like the one you looked at might be the Sealy Posturepedic SpringFree Latex Garden Vine Plush on this chart:
US-Mattress is offering this mattress for $1,259 for a Queen and $1,511 for a King, so no, you're not getting a special deal.
FYI, according to Sealy, "SuperSoft SealyFoam" is high density polyurethane foam.

Well it's not 100% latex because the website you pointed to says the mattress includes and inch and a half of "Convoluted SuperSoft SealyFoam" and an inch and a half of "SuperSoft SealyFoam." - that's 3 inches of non-latex foam in addition to 8.9" of latex foam.
This isn't necessarily a terrible thing, just be aware that if you purchase the Sealy Reflexion mattress it is not a 100% latex mattress. There are other foams layered in with the latex....

Custom Comfort in Southern California - KimberlyH

I'm still searching for my mattress but I wanted to let everyone know about a mattress company I visited last weekend in Mission Viejo in Southern California called Custom Comfort. Here is their website:
http://www.customcomfortmattress.com
This is a family owned business that builds their own mattresses in their own factory. We went in to look at the OMI organic latex mattress, but quickly discarded that idea when we saw Custom Comfort's own manufactured latex mattresses. They use all Talalay latex from LI. I'd been to what mattress stores I could find in Southern California trying latex mattresses from various manufacturers (e.g. Land and Sky, OMI, Sweda, Sealy, the Healthy Back Store's latex mattress) and the Custom Comfort line of latex mattresses beat them all by a mile.
The floor models are shown in three basic firmness levels, but they will custom build a mattress with whatever latex thicknesses and ILDs the customer...

I didn't even notice that on their site! Thank you! I just found the mattress online to show what it was we saw in store, and I'm not surprised that they told us it was 100% latex even though their own online info says otherwise. It was very comfy, regardless, but I can't believe I didn't notice that on their site!...

We went back to the mattress store today and tried out their latex beds (all Sealy Reflexion). We really liked the feel of them and we're seriously contemplating going with an all-latex bed, possibly DIY a la Bill (loved his photo thread). We were offered a "deal" (of course) on the Sealy Reflexion Saratoga Springs Plush mattress (http://www.mattressgiant.com/default.aspx?n=69&shop=store&category=MFLX&model=990681) . Now supposedly it is a mattress that is 100% talalay latex. It was incredibly comfy and was priced (regularly - haha!) at $2600. It was on sale for $2000 and they offered to sell it to us for $1425 (the district manager was there and he "approved" it - I feel dirty just going in to a mattress store). Anyway, is this is any way a good deal for just the mattress? We have through labor day to decide. It's much more expensive...

Kim,
I can't speak to the other brands but I can give you a bit on the Sealys. There's virtually no practical difference between the SpringFree and the PurEmbrace lines. It's primarily just a packaging and marketing piece. The PurEmbrace has a flatter top and a beige sort of look, etc.
I can give you a few tips for general latex shopping.
- Shop Talalay. You want a bed that is pure Talalay, no Poly cores or Dunlop layers.
- If it's an option, the type of Talalay you want is blend. Blend is a mixture of manmade and natural latex which provides a better balance of longevity and comfort. The difference between many manufacturers is what percentages of each they use in their cores.
- Shop somewhere that gives you a comfort exchange....

I've spent time on this forum for months soaking up all the information but was nervous about DIY latex without being able to try it out. I went to Sleepy's and Mattress Giant and both told me that mattresses I tried were 100% latex. My own research after the fact showed one small layer of latex. They are just counting on people not knowing and pushing a mattress.
A few months ago I went the DIY route. I have a 3 layer from Sleep EZ and like others found them to be vey helpful and have a good deal. My set-up is 3" firm Dunlop, 3" medium Dunlop and 2" Talalaly soft top. I missed the height of my old battered S pillow top and I love a soft top so I added a Celsion Talalay 3" soft topper. I have never slept better.
