Re: Ikea latex vs. Sealy Embody - jimsocal

Are you SURE the Sealy mattress has 3" of natural latex on top? That sounds very unlikely to me. They make their own synthetic latex and I've never heard of any S company mattress using natural latex. I'm not saying it couldn't be but I'm very skeptical.

I'm also skeptical about synthetic latex being any good unless maybe it is Talatech which I doubt it is. But does IKEA have a "easy return" policy like, say, CostCo? If so, then it wouldn't hurt to try it and return it if you don't like it.

Of these 2 choices, Sealy would be my least desirable choice.

I personally would take the Sealy you have, open it up and put some latex layers on top of the springs instead of the crap foam they have in there. We did that with my wife's bed and she...

Talatech is a blend of synthic and natural latex.  Both are made with a talalay process.

You can google search to find the difference between talalay and dunlop process.  Sleepez has a discussion on it at their website.

Just for reference ... a little more about Sealy's smart latex and a bit of history

Sapsa and Latex Foam Products were partners in 1996 in a joint venture called Latex International. LI produced Talatech from Latex Foam Products and Dunlop or what they call "Continuous Process" from Sapsa. http://www.allbusiness.com/manufacturing/furniture-manufacturing-mattress-mfg/7278767-1.html

In 2001 Sealy purchased Sapsa and became the biggest latex producer in the world.

Also in 2001 a fire burned down the LI factory which was rebuilt within a year. This disrupted the growth of latex products in North America.

Springfree II introduced in 2006 with the same core http://ir.sealy.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=151044&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=885286&highlight=

The smart latex trademark was registered in 2008 http://www.trademarkia.com/smart-latex-77450063.html and this was also when the PurEmbrace line using smart latex was introduced. This grew from the "Pressure Relief Inlay system" that was introduced in the Posturepedic lineup earlier....

I was just doing a little searching around and there are a lot of sites that are selling the rejuvenite brand name and many of them in their description (even now) are saying that the ones that are described on the packaging as latex or natural latex are Nuform latex. When rejuvenite first came out they were all Nuform latex. This is a real example of brand &/or material "confusion" aggravated with non specific information from LI. At one point even the LI site was saying that Nuform was available in their pillow division but I didn't see it now.

The rejuvenite site describes it as "RejuveNite™ is a line of ultra-premium talalay latex pillow products. It offers a superior alternative to  products made with "memory foam" and other synthetic materials." which is similar to how LI describes Nuform "Offers a step-up within a latex or hybrid line-up".  It...

I'm guessing you are correct given his description on the phone, and he thinks it's the blended Talatech as well, but LI is not so good at supplying information sometimes. In looking around more, the rejuvenite brand also has Celsion pillows and Talatech pillows so it's clearly not only Nuform. I'll still post here what I get that confirmed but I think it's pretty certain it's the blended latex.

Thanks for the additional info.  I wouldn't be willing to go driving for hours to try a mattress.  I think I can find something suitable locally or the DIY route.

I went to Walls Mattress, which only sells the Bowles line.  I actually bought my current mattress from a different Walls location (the guy said his parents own the other shop, and he probably delivered my current mattress 9+ years ago!), and now that I look, it's actually a Bowles. I hadn't looked until just now, didn't want to be persuaded in my shopping. Too bad I don't still have the receipt or I'd make a warranty claim against the collapsed pillow top ;)

The three I liked were:

Chantilly - "11" plush top mattress, Visco lumbar support...
