Hi.  I've been on and off this forum for a few years.  In 2007, I bought a Vera Wang latex mattress & box spring, medium firmness, from Sleepys.  My grilfriend at the time loved it.  I didn't find it as wonderful.  I thought it slept hot and I'd wake up with back pains some nights.  Due to handful of moves, etc, that mattress (and girlfriend)is now gone and I'm in need of a new one (on both accounts :).  As I posted in another thread, I'm looking at either the Coco-Mat mattress, which I can pick up in a store locally in NYC, or going with Flobeds.

I've read a lot about Flobeds over the years on this board and the one thing I consistently hear is that the reccomended firmness is often way too soft. ...

Hi Jasmine,

I haven't been to this forum in many months, but just decided to have  a look today. Perhaps you've already figured out what you need. I have posts from a year plus ago explaining the configuration that works best for me. But I'll repost briefly here again. Also if this comes through in one long paragraph, I apologize.  Last few times I posted a year or so ago I couldn't figure out a way to fix (happened when I changed browsers)

Anyway, I'm 5" 51/2 " and weigh 128-130 pounds. Due to lots of pain issues, I need a bed that's very soft on top, but also firm support. I bought a Flobeds natural talalay (3 layers of 3" each with a soft 1" convoluted topper piece over everything) and the combination that has worked best for me is a soft top layer, followed...

Help with Latex topper please - randys

I finally decided (7 mattresses in11 months) on a Costco spring type Cadbury, for now anyway...

First two weeks wonderful, now back  pain, of course.   I want to try a 1 or 2 inch latex topper on it as I really like the way I feel for about the first 6 hours of sleep, and would like to add just a slight layer of firmness...

A.  which site, other than flobeds ($400 for a topper, too much, sorry), would you recommend for latex topper, NOT foam

B. will 1 inch be enough?

SLEEP EZ says 30 day return is an option, that is great news...anybody with any other ideas let me know...for instance, on sleep ez my...

32 is actually reasonably firm.  Flobeds calls it firm.  Their XF is 36.  Alot of people who have Flobeds get the base levels of XF which is 36, so I think 40 is probably firm enough.

If you really want firm you can consider dunlop latex.  I think 6" of around 40 dunlop would be very firm though.

Personally, I stick with talalay with a slight preference for the 100% natural over the blended.

Sleepez might be able to get you something in that firmness (38-40) as well for 6" if you call them.   It looks like SLAB actually has a better price in 6" blended talalay.

It is possible that you might just want to get the 6" and add the 2" you have, and try to decide from that what else you want to add.  I would think that combination would...

@Phoenix: It never would've occurred to me to try a latex-memory foam-latex combo, but it sounds like it could work.  I actually prefer the sensation of memory foam, it's the off-gassing I can't stand.  I'll keep your recommended set-up in mind in case the mem. foam over latex doesn't work out as anticipated.

@Sandman & Mark: The convoluted latex topper is 28 ILD blended talalay from FloBeds, approximately 2" at the peaks.  It's surprisingly supportive and a lot firmer than expected (maybe a cushion firm feel), so I feel fairly confident adding 2" of memory foam on top.  I checked out the 1" toppers at Overstock and it seems like all of them are cut shorter than standard mattress dimensions.  I have a problem with that because even though I'm only 5'6", I like extra arm room at the top of the mattress.  I'm a born sprawler.  Thanks...

Just curious ... how are you making out?

Since it was your post that sort of "turned on the tap" of posting a lot of what I had discovered, I'm wondering how you and your mom are doing with your "research"?

Phoenix

Well, the past couple of weeks I've been mostly dealing with "winter is coming" weather changes and gnashing my teeth down flat whenever I think of mattress shopping.

I believe that the mattress Mom has -- which she loved for a number of years -- is latex.  The tag doesn't say -- doesn't have any contents at all listed in the space for it on the tag at the head of the bed.  There are a number of letters and numbers written on the...

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

We're looking for a new twin mattress, probably extra long, for my 86 year old mother to use on her adjustable bed.  She has had progressive spine problems for about 40 years, somewhat alleviated by the fact that she's always exercised to the extent she was able and by two back surgeries (most recent about ten years ago).  Her mobility has become increasingly limited, so a comfortable bed is increasingly important.

Often firm mattresses are recommended for back problems, but for her, they are miserable.  Last time we shopped for a mattress she was able to get to a large mattress store, tried many, and the only one she found comfortable seemed to me about as firm as jello.  She loved her jello mattress for a number of years, however.  But now she says her bed feels to her as if it...

Thanks Sandman! That's part of the conclusion I was coming to based on reading user reviews - that the S mattress manufacturers (apparently) don't use quality latex or memory foam and that's why so many complain of body impressions, etc.  Good to hear that the 100% latex ones will not have such problems.

As for trying one out, unfortunately, I can't find a place locally that for sure has all talalay latex.  I asked about the Dr. Breus Bed, which we liked, and the salesman told me it's natural Talalay latex, but that it has soy-based foams in the base (not sure exactly what that means).  And he couldn't tell me how thick the Talalay latex was  :(  Returns are exchange only, 15% restocking fee, and can only do one (and delivery is charged as well).  Total cost would be about $3k to begin with.  So, not liking that...

A lot of the mattress manufacturers I talked with ... especially those that had been around for a long time ... seemed to agree that flipping even a latex mattress would add a few years of life to an already very long lasting mattress. While latex is probably the most durable material out there, it is not immune from body impressions although they would be much less prevalent and take much longer to happen. Of the different types of latex (Talalay, Dunlop both all natural and blended) it seems that the all natural Talalay in the lower ILD's is the most likely to wear out or develop impressions. It is really a "green" driven product which is the primary reason they (Latex International) came out with it but does not have the same compression resistence as the blend according to the testing that has been done on it. This information...

I lay on the OMI terra bed and it was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately wonderful here meant insanely expensive. The other OMI beds I lay on were also very nice but I believe also overpriced and not as nice as the Terra. While I acknowledge that their level of "organicy" (if there is such a word) is probably higher than any other manufacturer, their price definately shows it.

I have done a lot of research into latex beds and I discovered that many smaller or medium size mattress manufacturers will sell direct to the public at prices lower even than Sleep EZ which in turn has lower prices than flo-beds and savvy rest. The problem with this is that most of them will make a custom bed for you but they do not have "layer exchanges" like Sleep EZ or Flo beds or savvy rest or foam sweet foam...
