Don't do surgery for a too firm mattress. You would normally just add a topper for a too firm mattress. It might be harder to add a topper if you are using a Murphy bed as it will want to slide when you raise the bed.

Exchanging for a softer mattress might solve the problem. Just stay away from the pillow tops as they are prone to body impressions.

I disagree. I would not exchange for a softer mattress. A softer mattress will no doubt just have more cheap foam inside that will hurt your back due to lack of support.
First I would try adding a good very low ild latex topper. See if that helps. I'd try no more than an inch or an inch and a half. Any more than that can give you back pain due to not enough support. No, latex that soft...

Munnar--assess what firmness your current bed is, and then decide what you need based on it. Most people on this site would recommend one of the firmest Sealys, if you're set on that brand--most of the big "S" companies use cheap foam in the softer pillow tops, and it breaks down quickly.

If you're really set on that mattress brand, get a firm model and then get foam (latex, memory foam or poly foam) toppers as necessary. Lots of threads in this forum about toppers. Sealy also makes some latex models, which i'm not sure are great (there are some comments about them in this forum), but they might be better than the traditional innersprings AND they might give you insight into what latex feels like. ...

Hi - I have fibromyalgia and am strongly considering purchasing a latex mattress in the hopes that I will get more comfortable rest. But before proceeding with what is, for me, an expensive purchase, I was curious to hear from others who have chronic pain. Did your new mattress help you? Did it make things worse? Stay the same? I'd love to know what mattresses chronic pain sufferers think help the most (And if you wouldn't mind sharing, height, weight, and sleep position, that would be amazing).

I haven't found a thread about this on the board - but if I'm missing something, I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

Much thanks!

Need an advice on using a topper on my old pillow top - collieb
Oct 19, 2009 1:11 PM
Hello!

Given what I've read so far, comments are very informative and helpful. Many thanks for your time and effort.

Here is my situation. My wife and I have been using a pillow top mattress (Sealy) for more than 4 years. The mattress started sagging, making us feel uncomfortable and tired even after long hours of sleep (indentations on both sides with a bump in the middle). Unfortunately, I don't think they are severe enough for a warranty coverage. I now realize I should not purchased a pillow top in the first place.

Anyway, I was thinking about getting a topper as a "temp" solution (I don't intend to buy a new mattress within the next year). Here are my questions:

Can I use a topper on top of a pillow-top mattress? If yes, can it be a memory foam or should it be a latex one, or else? (and why?)

If not,...
