Probably too much foam and/or too much old foam and certainly cheap foam that isn't giving you enough support.

Re: Does a latex foam topper ontop of firm innerspring mattress make a good combination? - jimsocal

I think the Sealy coils are too thin gauge. Get the thicker coils.
Get the mattress that has the LEAST amount of foam, because none of the foam will be any good. Chances are you'll have to do mattress surgery on it anyway, but you can try to make one work with little foam (Extra EXTRA firm) and then add your latex topper(s). My advice is to try a 1" latex and a 1" memory foam like Sensus. You can put the Sensus under the Latex so your girlfriend maybe won't feel the memory foam heat (?). Otherwise go with 2 x 1" latex - one ultra soft, and one just soft. THen you can change them around, one on top of the other and vice versa to adjust the firmness you want. Or try it with just one, etc.
Good luck.

Your opinion please - Sabra

I've been greatly helped by many of you on this forum and changed out my mattress a couple years ago to a Sealy latex. Wish now I'd gone with FloBeds but it was not in the budget. I eventually had to do the surgery of removing the cheap top layers because of a dip on each side but the surgery did confirm it had a nice 3" latex top and a 6" dunlop latex bottom. It was way too firm after that so I added an HR eggcrate topper. That worked OK but I still awoke with pressure point pain the the hips. Then I added a Soft 20 ILD FBM 1" latex topper (which was clean and very nice)...again some relief but started feeling slight pressure point pain in the hips by morning since I'm a side sleeper. Researched the forum some more and thought a 22 ILD Sleep...

I feel for your loss of $445...Was your topper blended or natural talalay latex? Just wondering--does your Sealy mattress have any divots? Since blended talalay is supposed to last longer that natural, your report will help in future latex decisions....
Re: New Bed causes lower back pain - Kait

When my mattress(s) caused me low back pain I knew it was the mattress because it hurt the worst first thing in the morning...very stiff, tight low back muscles, spasmed.  During the day, I sorta warmed up out of it pretty well, then when I went to bed, it I felt uncomfortable, but it worsened during the night, repeat, repeat.  I found myself staying up later and later because I did NOT want to lay down on that mattress and start the pain cycle again!
I went through several beds, each of them ended up the same way, dippy under my heaviest part, causing back pain.  I went out of town for four nights and stayed at a lovely hotel and my back was so much improved after the first night, healed after the second, and I just felt great the third.  Wanted to take that mattress home with me.  I...

SleepEZ - 3" Latex Topper - A Total Waste of Money!
Although SleepEZ has fantastic service, and the staff is very knowledgeable, they do NOT have latex toppers worth buying. Since getting our topper in December 2008 and our replacement in March 2009, we have discovered that we would have been better off burning our money in our fireplace. I called SleepEZ and explained that our second topper also failed and is permanently compressed to less than half the 3" it is supposed to be. I also explained that there are large, permanent, uncomfortable 1-1/2" to almost 2" deep divots in our bed (they were measured and photographed). We put the topper on a brand new Sealy Latex Weybridge with matching boxspring (received 4 days before topper arrived), so our mattress was not the problem. We spoke to and emailed Jeremy about all of this, but were told in so...

Thanks for all the info/advice, Jim. There's alot there, so I hope you don't mind if I respond to it in pieces.

I take it that the thickness of the individual coils is more important than the overall amount of steel in the springs? I'll definitely prefer thicker coils in my search, then.

Yeah, that was the basic plan. Hard to figure out exactly what's there, though. According to USMattress, that first Serta I referenced has the following layers (from top to...

Thanks for the anecdote, pralbee. I currently have a very old mattress which I put a 2" memory foam topper on a few years ago. I think the memory foam has broken in too much at this point, and my girlfriend hates it (she sleeps hot, apparently). But, when I first got it I think it helped make the bed more comfortable. Of course now I've got a large sag in the middle of the bed, so it's definitely time for it to go.

Unfortunately there's no Costo in this area, but I think I'll order their Cuddle Bed pad online, which seems like a good deal even for the non-member price.

I've been trying to find other innerspring mattresses that meet the "simple and firm, but good springs" criteria, and I've noticed that Sealys (e.g. http://www.us-mattress.com/sealy-hope-mills-firm.html) have a higher coil count, but slightly thinner coils. Basically 782 14 gauge coils,...

Interesting blog. I noticed he mentions the bankruptcy of Simmons and how Serta came to the rescue. What is also interesting is that in 3 local furniture stores  in my area that carry Serta and Simmons, Sealy is no longer carried.  Of course the sales staff just gives the line "Sealy mattresses just aren't what they used to be, so we no longer carry them". Of course NO mattress is made the way they used to be, but hey, why quibble. Any company that can make a great mattress and be honest about their product is a great new resource for the consumer, so thanks....
