Re: Cut open my Sealy and now its sleeping pretty darn good! - BeddyBye

I tend to think you're right since I had that similar issue with the Marshall coils I slept on. My lower back is what bothered me the most. I felt like the springs were just not holding me up. My mattress guy tried a couple of other things to no avail, until he decided it just had to be the springs. He was right. LuraFlex still helps with decreased motion as do the pocketed coils. But they just feel stronger and more supportive under my back. Even when I took off my latex/foam layers and put my hands on the coils, they just seem to "give" too much. The wire gauge is just too thin for me.

One thing though. I slept one on a Westin Heavenly Bed which is a Simmons Beautyrest with those pocketed coils and LOVED IT! Now I'm not sure because it was just one night, or...

BUT, try to find a mattress that feels mostly comfortable to you WITHOUT the need of toppers or cushy pads. Sure, you can always supplement an already fairly comfy mattress with a little more softness. But if it's TOO firm underneath, you'll still bottom out and feel that hard surface against your hips, back and shoulders. So, my advice is to start out with a comfortable mattress and go from there. That's what I did. And, even then I find myself changing my toppers now and then depending on how my body feels. I think I have it down now, though!

When I went to try out a McRoskey mattress, that's what the gentleman there told me. He said I shouldn't rely on toppers and featherbeds to make the mattress feel perfect if it doesn't feel good on its own. Excellent advice.

I think if you buy any of the S-brands you can expect to have some pretty uncomfortable hammocking by 5 years, if its a king size mattress, you are within your average weight height ratio, and its not a pillowtop.  The smaller mattress sizes seem like they hold up better.  Pillowtops go bad real fast -- I've never owned own but this is what I always hear from friends, family, and this forum.  My advice for buying an innerspring is to buy a firm mattress for as little cost as possible, then plush it up with "aftermarket" items like toppers, pads, or the famous CuddleBed.  This is more or less what I have learned from this forum....

Consider a mattress without the pillow top, and put your own in it to extend the life of the mattress before it hammocks.

I have made recommendations about IKEA products on other posts and they have a sale on spring beds right now until Sept 14th. Many of their mattresses are approved by Canadian Physiotherapy Association for quality, firmness and price....

Hi,

I am currently using a 10 year old Simmons Individual pocket coil and bought the IKEA Tolg and used it on top of the old mattress for 3 fabulous nights of sleep.

We had to return it as it was not a Eastern King size ... it was the wrong size and my store received quite a few shipments of it. My mattress has hammocked and it is time to replace it, so I have been out shopping, researching and reading posts and comparing.

For point of reference, I am 6'5" and 205 lbs and my wife is 5'4" 125 lbs.

I was into IKEA today .... their Erfjord is the greenest and cheapest latex mattress on the market for me in Toronto, ON for a Eastern King mattress.

I tried it with the Tolg and it was very comfortable on my back and side. In the store,...
IKEA Mattresses: Hasselback or Erfjord Does anyone have any experience with them? - Jazzsinger777

Hi All,

I have been flopping on all kinds of mattresses and thought I preferred the latex mattresses due to many of their qualities: mite free; natural etc...

After reading MANY posts from all of you, I have learned that some 100% (which is a marketing term) Natural latex were hammocking and tearing ... after minimal to a few years.

I read a post which mentioned a combination of natural and synthetic latex offered the most durability and one of the individuals quite liked the Erfjord Latex mattress which is 85% natural and 15% synthetic in a Dunlop style mold. It has eco friendly cotton cover with silk/wool wadding. When I sat on it, I bottomed out and hit the slats on the bottom. When I laid down on it, it was quite comfortable with a pillow top on it ... the Tolg.

Also, IKEA has a sale on right...

Re: Stay away from Simmons brand, researching a "Diamond" brand mattress - Kait

Dear Producer;
I will have to check out the Diamond beds, too.  Did you ever open up your old bed to see how it was made that the pillowtop didn't crush?  I have had two beds by Restonic  do this and one by Stearns and Foster, so am very hesitant to go pillowtop anymore.  But I need the cush or my arms and legs get numb.
Thanks,
Kait

As someone who found this forum in my excruciating search for just the right mattress last week, here's my experience and recommendations re: Diamond Mattresses.

I owned and slept on very comfortably a Diamond (model: Spinal Pedic “Prestige”). Bought it 10 years ago, around the time (I believe) the industry started making plush-type pillowtops. Or at least they hadn't been making them for years as it was hell finding sheets that would fit 15” deep mattresses! I was concerned the pillowtop would...

I have been in the bed buying/replacing cycle for quite awhile now.  My main problem is low back pain when I awake.  I finally have cut open my Stress-O-Pedic bed and changed the insides.  I have come to the conclusion that the most important thing to consider is the part of the mattress that supports you...the springs.(YES I have had a latex mattress which did sag after a few years, and I also had a Select Comfort which the kids now own, both don't work for me).  This mattress has a Marshall unit, individually wrapped coils of a 14.5 gauge wire, seems to be 3-5 turns each.  This is the part of the bed that is letting my back down.
What seems to happen is that unless there is pressure pushing up from underneath you, the body sinks and just lays there.  As my butt is the heaviest part of me(and...
natural care latex by simmons - elizabeth

I have been looking into a Natural Care laxtex mattress by Simmons.  Does anyone know anything about this.  I have been told that it is all latex foam, not memory foam.  I had bought a simmons beautyrest a few years ago and was told that it did not contain any memory foam only latex but came to find out that it did indeed contain memory foam.  I hate the memory foam.  It feels soft at first but then in the middle of the night I hit a hard bottom and wake up in order to find a more comfortable spot.  Hoping that all latex will be more springy.  I have always slept with a latex pillow.  I was also wondering if a latex topper would help instead.  I tried an egg crate topper, but just ended up with a deeper valley to roll out of .  I weigh 128lbs at...
