Re: What is the softest mattress (or topper) available? - DianeK

Phoenix is right - a lot is going to depend on what is underneath the topper. But I will venture to say the 15 ILD Celsion will not be too soft for your wife. I have the 14 ILD Talatech from SLAB and I had to put an extra layer of wool on top to make it soft enough - by itself it was a bit too firm. I weigh 105 lb....
Re: Green Sleep Coil + Latex - DianeK

Just thought I would add to this thread that the 14 ILD Talatech topper that I purchased 4 months ago from SLAB still has a strong odor to it. I will only sleep on that bed if we have company and every time I do the smell is quite strong (despite having a Dormeir and an extra layer of wool between it and me) and I wake up mildly congested with a headache. The bed without this topper did not give me headaches, so it is definitely the latex. I also had to return a topper to Essentia for the same reason. I didn't return the SLAB topper because restocking and shipping fees from Canada made it almost a losing proposition. As a veterinarian, I spent over 20 years wearing latex gloves daily so that may have sensitized me. I have also reacted to the horsehair in Hastens and now have...

I really appreciate all of the research that has been done, as well as the solid advice that has been given. I had a feeling all along that I needed at least one layer of firmer latex to keep me off of the springs, and at the same time, didn't want to bypass the mattress with too many layers of latex. When I first tried the 1" of 21 ILD that Evelyn at SLAB suggested, I knew it was too soft and was not helping, so I was confused when she suggested 2" of 19 ILD to begin with. After reading the research (thanks Pheonix) done on my mattress, it makes sense to add a firmer layer since the mattress poly/cotton is soft, so I ordered an inch of 28 ILD from SLAB last night - also was able to get a little bit of a break on the pricing...
Re: Anyone tried the Dream Form Green Tea Memory Foam Topper from Overstock.com? - sleepy_ella

It was a painful decision, I have a feeling I'm going to require another 1" topper, but I opted for the 1" Dream Form memory foam topper. I decided to go with the Dream Form over Aerus because there wasn't a single complaint about odor in the review section...only references to a fresh minty fragrance that dissipates quickly. My latex topper has a slight vanilla fragrance, so put the two together and I suppose I'll have a refreshing vanilla mint aromatherapy experience.
Being a side sleeper, I suspect I'll need more cushioning than 1" of memory foam can provide, so I plan to add in a 1" 19 ILD talatech topper if my suspicions turn out to be correct. That would give me a configuration that looks like this: 1" (compressed) 28 ILD talatech, 1" 19 ILD talatech, 1" 3 lb. memory foam. I imagine I'll lose...

Soft and medium certainly have a different feel (depending on what different people call "soft" and "medium") but how different depends on perception as well. Different people with different weights, weight distribution, and sensitivities/perceptions actually will feel the same thing differently. If you go the topper route, I would probably be looking in the range of 1-2" of "soft" (say 18-24ILD) given your experience and weights. More specific than this or even if you fall outside this "range" with "other than normal" preferences is very difficult to predict without some field testing. Typically a 3" layer is a "rough guideline" for a comfort layer but what is under and over it, using a "progressive" or "differential" approach, differences in weight and weight distribution, and other circumstances and preferences, all play a role that can only really be tested in experience.
In your case, using a soft topper would...

I think I may have found a possible solution for you!
If you go here http://www.mygreenmattress.com/view_products/organicmattress.htm ... you will see some 2 sided mattresses that you can customize. The organic dreams is natural talalay in all layers and the Natural escape is a blended talalay core with natural on each side. I'd talked with him before and found him really helpful so I called him back today to ask some specific questions about your situation. He can customize the mattress pretty much any way you want. The standard soft is 24 24 24, and the medium is 24 28 24 (very similar to mine anda customized OMI in terms of ILD) quilted both sides (2 sided) manufactured mattress (no zipper). If you were willing to wait (about 3 weeks) he could also build it (he's a mattress manufacturer) to any specs you wanted that uses latex that...

I'm guessing that the reason you originally went with the Celsion for your latex was to compensate for the heat from the memory foam (even though this is less of an issue with Aerus). Is this correct?
Do you think you would have heat issues with regular Talalay?
If you don't think this would be an issue now that the memory foam is gone, then I would suggest that you purchase 1" Talatech in 28 ild.
The hope here would be that this by itself over the mattress would solve both the pressure issues and the alignment issues (except for your neck/numbness issues which probably need a change in pillow) in which case you would return the 21 and be finished with 1" of latex.
If this didn't work, then depending on your experience with the 28 by itself, the next step...
Re: Flobeds Firmness Advice for Light Stomach Sleeper - alex

You are nearly exactly the same weight and height as me, and I also sleep mostly on my stomach. I do have a girlfriend that is about 140 and is a side sleeper. I've had a flobeds for 50 days and still don't have it right. We are not very happy with it. It's been very frustrating. I don't know why they recommend configurations that are so soft. Putting the layers together and making changes is a pain in the a**; especially if you are taking something on the bottom and moving it to the top. its easy for them to be misaligned, they are heavy to carry, and if you dont have it exactly right its hard to close the case. we haven't even tried to send cores back yet; it also looks like a pain. If most beds had as good a return policy as flobeds, I do...
Re: Dunlop Vs. Talalay - Bioman

One of the vendors touting the advantages of 100% Natural Dunlop over blended Talalay for heavier people is Sleep Ez. Based on what you are saying, I need to ask him which of the sources he gets his Dunlop from and if it is truly 100% and not blended. It appears he is using 100% Dunlop sourced from Latex Green Aprico; using Sri Lanka raw materials. A quick search of the internet seems to show the importer as Richard Pieris Natural Foams Limited. The interesting part of the conversation is that he also sells blended Talalay from LI (Talatech) and 100% Dunlop for the same price. The 100% natural Talalay he sells costs around 25% more. So there does not seem to be a profit or supply based motive here as he could sell me either of the aforementioned for the same price and he also steered...

Phoenix,
Thanks again. I think I'll stick w/ the Sealy Greenhurst Firm as it should hold up quite well and I'll just consider the extra cost to be an 'insurance policy', lol.
I know that I'll have to wait until I sleep on it for a few weeks before deciding if I need a topper, and what I actually need it for. However, I'm pretty sure I'll get some type of topper and I'd like to continue my research. My guess is that I'll need a bit of 'pressure relief' along with a bit of support under my lumbar region. If I wanted to combine a latex topper (say 1" of Talatech) with a memory foam product (say 1" of Celsion or 1.5" of Aerus, which is quite inexpensive), would I get the benefits of the viscous property of the MF if I put it under...
