That said, the specific model you're looking at is ROCK HARD. It will NOT get much softer. What position do you sleep in? If it's side (the most common) this is likely a horrible choice for you.
The support in the Arrowind is not the question. The concern I have is with the pressure relief. Your best option (short of trying the bed for 30 days) is to wear some comfortable clothes and go lie down on the thing for 30 minutes without a salesguy yapping in your ear. If you can do that without feeling the need to turn that's a good sign.

What about a Comforpedic? Or one of their "NaturalCare" latex mattresses?

I can't say that I have any excellent advice, other than to really test out different beds by laying on them for at least five minutes.
The S-brands (i.e., Simmons, Sealy, et al.) are not favorited on this board, for the most part, based on my searches of the archives, but mainly due to the fact that they fail so quickly after a few years (e.g., sagging, lack of support)
If you search the DIY threads, that may be what you're looking for, especially since you and your wife require different types of support.
My friend has a gel-memory foam topper she got from Costco that she really likes, especially to "chill" the temperapedic she bought (it "sleeps hot" - a common phrase you'll see here). I think people purchase latex toppers from Foam by Mail (FBM) or Sleepez. You...

I'm slowly beginnig to educate myself on mattress (mostly the hard way -- my $2000 piece of junk sleep number is my 3rd bed that I'll be returning and cutting my losses on). I'm finally at a point where I think the best option would be to get a good quality, very firm mattress and then put a high quality topper on it to make it feel softer (which my wife greatly prefers).
Wondering if anyone can offer some suggestions? I've been looking at this one: http://www.us-mattress.com/simmons-tomahawk-firm-queen.html
Not too expensive, looks to be firm, and has lots of positive reviews. Would that be a descent choice?
As for a topper, where's a good place to buy online? Trustworthy with good customer service? I figure there is always the old standby Costco b/c of their great return policy, and they...

My mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest Classic (Gladstone Falls) and it's only 4.5 years old. My wife and I have had back aches that have gotten exponentially worse since the start of this year and sleeping on differnet mattresses and having less/no pain leads us to believe that our matress is the source of these pains. Since my mattress is still relatively young, I'd like to think that I could salvage the "core" of my matress (everything below the foam) without any issue.

I sent them an inquiry yesterday, to which so far no response received. June 24th: Hello, I am doing research to learn more about non-toxic mattresses--which i have deduced are essentially only available outside the "conventional" mattress industry of the "three s's," Sealy, Simmons, and whatever the third one is. I have surveyed the information on your website--and I gotta say, I believe the FloBeds people and I don't believe your claim at all. You are burning wool that probably has too much air amidst the fibers. You gotta pack that wool in more, and start with clean natural fibers. Then, you will find that the FloBeds people were right. Oh, but you already know that; you are merely engaging in...
