Thanks GK - We're thinking along the same lines.  In the end, if the surgery fails, I will ditch the coils and just add a latex base and have an all latex bed.

I did find out that the Bliss Beautiful bed is (from top to bottom):

3" Talalay 19 ILD
2" Talalay 24 ILD
6" Talalay 36 ILD

Because the foam failed in the pillow top so quickly, I think we're looking at getting rid of all the foam, and starting over with Latex.  The brands we're considering are Latex International (as they seem to be a trusted brand), but I noticed others have used FBM / the Foam Factor but the reviews seemed mixed.

Anyone care to comment on the...

From what I know, the only US manufacturer of Talalay is Latex International.  Find a few of the online mattress shops and price what you want.  There is no preferred source, pricing wise.

Looks like LI has updated their website.  This page lists some of their online resellers.

And, review their discourse on 100% Natural vs. Blended Latex... they don't hesitate to recommend Blended.

And, this page suggests that they have abandoned their nominal ILD N-scale used for 100% Natural and now use the same one ILD scale for both Blended (Talatech) and 100% Natural Latex.  This would be a good simplification if you can now spec either product by the same ILD firmness scale, 14-32 for the pressure relief layers and 36-44 for the support core layers.

My thinking is to try it out this weekend and order another 3" of the soft ILD if it is still too firm.  Do you think I'll bottom out the 3" soft layer?

I would try it for a week or more.

The LI Talatech 28 over springs is probably advisable... not too soft.  Three more of 19-22 over that may be too deep (will sag) for you, if you are a front sleeper, but perhaps not... hard to know how the Latex will behave over the springs.  Take it one step at a time.  The basic Latex model is a 2" comfort layer over a 6" core layer.  Given the core is firm springs... and your weight, a little more comfort layer might work out.

For temp trial, you can fold the 3" 28 into 6" 28 and lay on it. ...

I got my extra firm spring mattress yesterday.  Wow is it firm.  My wife said, "People don't sleep on mattresses this hard...its like a board"  I told her, they wouldn't sell them if someone didnt' wnat them.  Luckily we both slept well and no aches and pains this morning.  I get my 3" talatech topper on Friday.  I can't wait.  I got the medium ILD, which is between 28-30.  I hope it is soft enough.  I'm a pretty big guy, about 280 and was afraid I'd bottome out on the soft ILD which is about 20.

Guesstimating here...

The 28 Latex on 'wow' firm spring core will probably work for you... you may want a few more inches of Latex to isolate the springs a bit more. Your wife, typically side sleepers, may find it to be too firm... not enough...

After speaking with a few people at different online vendors, it sounds like I should opt for a medium firmness topper.  I just ordered a 3" talatech topper from FoamsweetFoam.  It was a clearance item, so no returns, but at $299 for a king size, I took the chance.  Wish me luck. I'll post the results after I have it together.

What ILD rating?

I'm happy wiht my setup.  I got an extra firm innercoil mattress, no pillowtop, and very little foam over the springs.  I added 2 - 3" layers of talatech latex.  Medium and then soft on the top.  When I added the soft, which was the last step, I was afraid it was too soft, but I wake up feeling good in the morning and sleeping through the night.  I got the topper layers at FoamSweetFoam.  They are on sale there and there are no returns, so its a little risky.  I was prepared to cut the layers and start zoning if I wasn't happy, but I didn't need to.  Good Luck.

I just bought a very firm "s" mattress from a local company and put a 3" latex topper on it.  I'm just now trying it out.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I got the topper from sweet foam.  It is talatech and they have them on clearance for $299.  No returns though, so there is a bit of a risk if you don't like it.  I'm hoping the coil spring mattress will last since it doesn't have a pillowtop or much padding layer under the cover.

This is exactly what I'm trying.  I just bought the innerspring mattress and ordered the topper today.  I found clearance talatech toppers at foamsweetfoam at a very good price $299 for a king in what ever firmness you want.  It is a clearance though and they won't accept returns...so it's a little risky.  At that price, for a LI manufactured foam, I took the chance.  I was looking at FBM before that, but I was concerned with the inconsistency of their ILD ratings.  Once I get it all together, I'll post my results.

Thanks!  I'll be very interested to hear your results.  What is FBM?  What is LI?

I guess I'm not too current on what all the terms mean :-/

ILD is some sort of density rating right?  Is high density better than low? ...
