Re: The "S" brands? - jimsocal

Dave, thanks for the civil reply. I thought my original reply was perhaps a bit too harsh but I really do dislike the S brands - I have seen so much pure deception going on with them, I could write a short book about it. I feel your idea that it is because of their success that they are disliked is off the mark but you are entitled to your opinion, of course! And 99% of the time I am very courteous here, but I got a little hot under the collar re your "because of their success" comment, as if there are not thousands of other reasons why people don't like them and why this forum in particular has an anti-S Co bias, or at least used to when I was around here a lot... That said,...

I thought Vera Wang was all synthetic latex?

You asked about mattresses that were latex that you could try locally.  There are Natura organic mattresses that are recommended by Budgy (our resident mattress saleperson/expert) as they don't have any PU foam or Boric Acid).   Not sure if you have a mattress store that sells them nearby.  Not sure of return policies.

Do you have a Savy Rest nearby?  Google them for locations.  Some people like those.  At least with those you can change the layers around, but you can return it.  You can only exchange Dunlop for Talalay, no returns.

Hi Leo,
I don't know about all the Vera Wangs. This is pretty close to the one Sleep Train carries, it does have some PU foam in it.

It is interesting that after years of telling people about latex on this site, the S Co's are starting to offer it, albeit synthetic or blended.

This Latex Mattress Comparison Chart may be of interest to you.

Yeah, that's the question I was wondering. Is it synthetic or blended? Do any of the S co's to your knowledge, use blended latex aside from Sealy? And is it comparable to LI Talatech? Or does Sealy make it themselves and "who knows?"?

Don't know about Sealy, but according to their website, Serta uses "Talalay Latex" in their Vera Wang by Serta Specialty® Talalay Latex Foam Beds. But what kind of Talalay? If you click on the link and then scroll down (on...

thanks.  I did visit a local discounter who had a Serta bed that said it was Talalay latex.  The model was Caledonia.  This is from the stores website.

Caledonia Plush - Latex
8" Tallalay Latex Core, Additional Tallalay Latex in Surface, Bamboo & Cotton Blend Cover, 30 YEAR WARRANTY.
The king size was $3,000, on sale for $2,000.  Would be a bargain if it was all natural with no poly, etc.

Of course, no other store carries the "Caledonia" model.  I find on Serta's website they have this bed which they say is Talalay.  Not sure of the details.

"I HOPE you weren't referring to Vancouver Island when you said "Maybe that's part of the price you pay for living in such a beautiful but isolated part of the world" lol."

Vancouver Island is paradise and is the CENTER of the world. If it's not important to us ... it's just not important :)

OK on to some mattress talk ... cause that really important! (laughing)

There's a place on Fort st http://www.goodplanet.com/ and they have a couple of what look like Sueno and Greensleep. They are all very nice mattresses and are also well worth laying on as the Sueno's especially are easy to duplicate and both are good quality.

Sleep country also carries the Zenbody by sealy. One of them is all latex (core and top with no poly believe it or not) and one of them...

I have the stats for the Simmons natural care and even more importantly (they are almost all latex) the natural care elite. How each of these felt to you and the specific model that felt that way can lead to great information about combinations that work for you.

Using more expensive mattresses with higher quality materials in a mattress store can be an invaluable research tool in finding a much much less expensive mattress with similar qualities in a much lower budget.

They are well worth trying out along with the Serta pure response and the Sealy embody just for the information you can gain from knowing which of these fits you. This information could be very valuable in choosing a different (and much less expensive) bed with similar characteristics.

That's too bad. IBC has an origins line which is their latex line so it would have been nice if you could try them. I guess you're back to holder. Have you talked to them on the phone? At least we know thay have all latex mattresses and latex top mattresses and I'm guessing they have decent prices.

Failing that, I would either

1. Widen your search a bit to neighboring states and then do most of the work on the phone before you take any trips.

or

2. Go to local mattress stores and lay on mattresses that are mostly latex (Sealy springfree if you can find them or embody, Serta pure response, or Simmons natural care  and natural care elite, or any other latex mattress that they carry that has mostly latex in the top). Do most of the work...

A few ideas that may help you (gathered from many people who have been around for a long time and validated in my own mattress testing) ...

First of all the difference in feel between Talalay and Dunlop.

Talalay is more "airy" and Dunlop is more "dense". Think of angel food cake vs sponge cake. He might feel it is more bouncy because with a firmer topper, the lower layers of the mattress will have a more gradually rounded curve pressing on them from his body and there may be more springs pushing back at him than if he was compressing the springs with a "sharper" curve. He may in other words be describing a "feel" that comes from the springs but is enhanced by the topper.

Each person will feel the difference differently (depending on weight, weight...

Thanks Dave for your response and expertise. After nearly 2 weeks my mattress has not softened at all. Believe me, I recognize that all mattresses will be an adjustment but sleeping shouldn't be pure torture. Putting the pain aside, I bought this mattress because of the plushness; it has not softened at all since its delivery. I have the Revolution so it should be exceptionally soft. This isn't just a matter of me not adjusting. It's a matter of false advertisement or, unfortunately, a defect in the product. I shouldn't have to sacrifice sleep for weeks or months until the mattress "breaks in."

I am so disappointed in this mattress and I believe that there should be a sort of disclaimer telling people that it may be quite a while for the mattress to soften, that is if it softens at all. I am much too young to...
