One sore mistake

I purchased this mattress for two reasons: 1. I wanted a toxin-free mattress, 2. this was one of the best rated "green" mattresses out there at the time. What a costly mistake! It's touted for being an extremely comfortable mattress, but my back and hips say otherwise every night.

I'm a side sleeper and I am constantly shifting from one side to the other because of sore spots in my hips.(Mind you, I'm only in my 30's.) I did switch layers trying to get the most comfortable combination, but this just added to the cost of what was already an expensive mistake. The layers I received also arrived dirty in places, the wool layer appears very thin, and the cover is rough (I lose skin when I tuck in my sheets!)

When I talked to customer service about exchanging layers the first time, they told me: "Maybe a latex mattress just isn't right for you"--not a problem if they would have been willing to let me return it. As it is though, I'm stuck with a mattress that causes pain and keeps me from getting a solid night's sleep at anytime. (I currently have three dunlop layers: two soft and one medium.) It's too bad because they sounded like a good company with good intentions prior to my purchase.

Pros:

"Green", organic, toxin-free mattress.

Cons:

Uncomfortable, causes pain, cost, no returns.

Layer exchange, while it sounds good in theory, is expensive.

Did I say it causes pain??

My new latex mattress

Before I start to belly ache, let me first say, Shaun is a good and fair business man, so whatever I'm about to say has no reflection on him. I have decided I have a love hate relationship with the mattress, but I am not willing to send it back. (yet) unless our lower backs start acting up again.

I first got soft over soft over medium, and my husband got soft over medium over firm. We soon realized this was way too soft of a combo for us, so Shaun quickly sent us out an X-firm and another firm. I now lay on my husband first configuration, and he now lays on soft over firm over X-firm. He says it's much better, but is unsure now if his is maybe too firm. On some nights I think mine is still too soft, and firm at the same time, which is odd.

So I wonder if we will ever have this layering cake bed figured out ???. I wanted to cry at first because I am the one who pushed my husband into buying this after waiting almost 15 years to buy a new mattress. I even have people lined up to buy latex, but I'm not sure now if I want them to go through the nightmare I have gone through with it. Don't get me wrong, I still love it in some ways, and I'm still glad I got away from coil springs and the dangerous stuff the gov't mandates to be put into mattresses, I just never realized it would take so much work to find the right comfort. Sometimes I think I should have just got a 6" core then started adding the comfort to the top. Shaun did say he could have made mine that way. He even sent me a better cover with the zipper on top to make arranging the layers easier for us, free of charge. He also didn't charge me for the shipping of the new layers he sent out. He told me to take all the time I needed to figure out my comfort needs.

I also just had a baby 21/2 months ago, so my lower back was already hurting from the epidural. This mattress only added to my pain, but I think mainly because I had it too soft in the beginning. I don't have the backpain anymore, it just seems like I roll right off the side of the bed, and if I put my knee into it, I go right down to my foundation.

The bed seems more like a cheap foam in some ways. My husband says he feels better after sleeping on the couch, which has cheap foam in it. that is the part I don't get after spending almost a grand.

I think the top layer is almost too soft, kind like a wet marshmellow. The medium is what I want, but Shaun says it is really no different from the soft. mmmmm

anyways I think as long as my baby is not alergic to this stuff, I'm gonna keep it. It does make my bedroom feel cleaner. I am also getting all 5 of my kids a topper, and maybe the baby a latex crib mattress, but I will probably order from Foambymail or Overstock. They have the lowest prices. And since my bed is blended latex, the kids should be fine with the blended from another company. It can't be as dangerous as memory foam.

So all and all I am still glad I got this mattress, and I love my latex pillows from JcPenny. I had to search for the ones that smelled more like a tire. I wanted to puke when I smelled the ones that some say smells like cookie dough. They smell more like rotten milk!. Sure enough my mattress smells like the rotten milk too, but you don't notice it as much once you put the cover on it, and sheets etc....

Just remember if your cover or sheets, or waterproof protecter doesn't all have a stretch to it, you loose the whole feeling of the latex. It firms it up the more stuff you put in between you and your latex.

one more thing. I find the softer the mattress is, the harder it is to move around on it. My husband and I both prefer super soft, but realized in the talalay, it is best to go firmer.

About the foundation: I ordered a NOMAD bedframe from Amazon, for only $149. It's on it's way. Looks good, and good price, you might wanna check it out.

Pros:

spongy, clean/fresh feeling, I like knowing what is in my mattress. You can adjust it, and always add more comfort. Long lasting. Gives you pride to know you can put together your own mattress.

Cons:

Hard to rearrange the layers, Hard to figure out comfort level, sinks when pushed on by the knee, has slight odor, Expensive for foam that is not even pure latex.

We received delivery of our California King SleepEZ 13000 Organic earlier this week. I ordered over the phone from Shawn, and was not really impressed with the customer service I received. Shawn was professional and friendly, but seemed to rush me through the ordering process. He didn't ask me any questions unless I prompted him and seemed hurried. I hung up feeling uncertain about my purchase. That uncertainty continued when a few days later I had not received any sort of email order confirmation or receipt for my purchase. Given I had charged over $2300 to my credit card, I was uncomfortable having no receipt of my purchase. I did however, receive a email notification of shipping from UPS, so at least I knew something was on it's way to me. I called SleepEZ and spoke to Shawn again to request a order confirmation or receipt be emailed to me. Even though it was only 2 days later, he didn't remember me or my order, but said he would be sure to send a confirmation email. Still, nothing arrived in my inbox. I ended up emailing Kristina after the bed was delivered to again request a receipt (the delivery did not include any paperwork, not even a packing slip) and finally received it later that afternoon.

Now, onto the bed. It is lovely! This is our second latex mattress experience (we purchased Costco's Sleep Science latex mattresses for our kids), so we knew what to expect to some degree. The mattress arrived in 4 large and sturdy boxes. Each box was marked on the outside with which latex layers were inside and had convenient handles for moving them about. My husband called SleepEZ when they arrived and received good advice about assembly. Mainly, to leave our old mattress on the bed and lay the cover on top of it. Then, fold down the sides of the cover over the edges of our old mattress. This holds everything in place and gives a nice flat surface for layering the latex. Once all the layers are in place you just pull the edges of the cover up over them - easy peasy!

The organic cotton and wool cover was folded up inside the two top layers and is very nice. It is extremely soft and appears well made. It looks the same as the cover PLamarine received and posted photos of. It is a nice natural unbleached cotton color. I've heard that the Flobeds covers are nicer, but to be honest, I don't know how much nicer a mattress cover could possibly be. My only criticism is that the zipper they used could have been bigger/sturdier. The zipper head was small enough that it was hard to grip when pulling through the corners. A minor issue in my opinion.

We ordered 100% natural Talalay for all of our layers and have started out with the following configuration (from bottom to top). Husband: XF -XF-F-M, Me: XF-F-F-M. The latex itself seemed to be good quality (as far as I could tell). It was uniform in color and smelled nicer than the Costco beds and JCPenney latex pillows we have. Once the cover and sheet were on I couldn't smell it at all. There were stickers on each piece labeling it's firmness (as well as on the inner plastic bags that contained them). They were glued seams at the very bottom of each piece, which I assume is due to the fact that a Cal King is longer than a standard king.

We've only had the pleasure of sleeping on it one night so far, but we are in love with our new bed. My husband had been sleeping downstairs for the last 3 months because our old mattress was so bad for his back, he found the couch to be more comfortable. But last night he slept like a baby, hardly any tossing and turning. We both commented when we woke up that there was no numb arms or legs, no aching hips, and no back problems upon waking this morning. I only hope it is how we wake up every morning from now on.

In short, this bed is 13" of heaven! Well worth the marginal communication issues we had with SleepEZ. I originally made this purchase wishing I could afford to buy from Flobeds instead. But with the additional cost of the bed, plus shipping and CA sales tax, it just wasn't possible. After seeing and sleeping on SleepEz's product, I can't imagine that Flobeds product can be all that much better.
