Serta Icomfort request for advice

Greeting mattress experts and lurkers,

I am a once-a-decade mattress buyer in need of assistance.  Can anyone provide input for the Serta Icomfort foam mattress line?  Specifically, I'm interested in the Revolution model king size.  My initial search led me towards the Tempurpdic Rhapsody.  However, many reviews suggest Tempurpedic's sleep "hotter" than spring or other foam mattresses.  My wife is furnace so I dare not bring a mattress home which amplifies that issue.  So, my next focus was the Simmons ComforPedic.  My wife laid on every model and said they were "too springy" compared to the Tempurpedic and the iComfort.  So we are down to one option right now, the iComfort.  What I'm asking for help with is advice and comparison.  The iComfort line of Serta is very, very new and this is possibly why there is no data or opinions on the internet.  My heart is not set on the Revolution for $2,000 and I am genuinely interested in hearing advice and comments even if that information leads away from iComfort completely.

Thoughts?

Much appreciated,
Bronson

I bought a queen size revolution with the adjustable base back in May and am so happy I did, it is the most comfortable bed ever. The Icomfort has a different type of foam and does not retain the heat like the tempurpedic does.  There was a very slight odor when they first unpacked it and they recommended opening a window for a bit. The slight odor was gone in no time. Best purchase ever!!

I wanted to leave a quick post to share my experience.  My husband and I were sorely in need of a mattress - likely should have purchased a new one about 4-5 years ago but at that time a new baby put that idea on hold and a memory foam topper extended the life until recently and piqued our interest in a tempurpedic.  The plan was to purchase a new mattress after the holidays, but a "Christmas in July" sale prompted us to go in 'and just look'.

So we went to look at the Tempurpedic and after laying on 4-5 mattresses we told the salesperson we wanted a night to sleep on it before we made the final decision.  I was a bit concerned about dropping about 2k on a quasi-impulse purchase.  That is when she mentioned the icomfort - she must have thought our concern was price.  (It wasn't so much, it is always a habit of mine to sleep on it before making any final decision with my hard earned money).  When she said this mattress was crafted in part to be cooler than the tempurpedic our decision was pretty much made.  My husband sleeps hot and if he is hot he doesn't sleep - which means I don't sleep.  We did go home and talk it over and ended up purchasing the Revolution which if I remember correctly was also less expensive than most if not all of the tempurpedic models we were considering.

First off - absolutely no smell.  Very faint 'new' smell I think from the plastic and that went away in minutes.  The guys from the store came in, removed the old mattress quickly and set up the new queen sized frame, split boxspring (we have a older house with narrow hallways) and mattress.  We bought a water-proof mattress cover as recommended in this thread.  It was expensive IMO (about $100 bucks) but small price to pay for a long-term investment.

From the first night my husband slept soundly and I have not heard him snore ever since.  He has LOVED the mattress since the first night.  I however took about a week before I slept through the night. I sunk into the bed a bit and didn't turn and move during the night quite as smoothly as I did on our old mattress. The first two mornings I didn't feel sleepy but I didn't feel quite refreshed either after waking every 2-3 hours during the night.  My back didn't feel quite right either - not quite sore, but almost as if I had a work out with my back muscles.  But each night and morning this got exponentially better and by the end of the week I pretty much slept through the night (with the exception of a middle of the night run to the bathroom) and woke up feeling refreshed.

Here is the most exceptional thing.  I admittedly had poor posture before our purchase.  I tended to slouch in my chair or when standing - it took a conscious effort to stand straight and tall.  My mid and upper back usually ached by the end of the day.  I no longer have these problems - I stand up straight with no effort and my back feels great from morning to night.  I actually catch myself with good posture and say to myself 'wow - I was just doing that and not even thinking about it.'  I suspect I'm getting the support I need and those "aches" were actually my back getting used to my proper alignment at night.

So that wasn't such a quick post after all!!  I hope you found it helpful though.  Bottom line - we're very happy with the icomfort Revolution.

Two more things to add.  #1: we have had the mattress since July 5th.  #2: My husband is 5"8' 210 and I'm 5"4' 245.

thanks velvet and thanks decisions for confirming no smell on the new mattress - same here, no smell on my Revolution either, something faint, but went away quickly.

I'm still figuring my Revolution out since it is so different than a conventional bed.  I'm 6'2" 195 lbs, had the bed since July 13th, '11.

We are shopping for good matterss for my husand's back pain.  Right now we are thinking either Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme or Serta I comfort Revolution.

Both these mattresses seem very comfortable.  Somehow salesperson scared us that Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme sleeps warmer.

We are very confused about our decision.  Any feedback is appreciated on these mattresses.

Thanks

For back pain I would highly suggest steering clear of a deep-sinking Cloud or Revolution. Just my 2 cents based on what I've heard from others. I would stick to something firmer like a Temp Classic or Serta Genius. They'll soften up a little over time but still provide support.

Just a quick update. Back in May I was going back and forth between Tempurpedic and Serta iComfort, and finally went with a Tempur Classic (cheaper than the Revolution and Prodigy by the way). Got a queen-size and had the bed since mid-June. After reading all these posts I'm glad I went with the time-tested product. First week or two it felt very firm...almost uncomfortably so. But as the guy in the store suggested, I walked around on the mattress a couple times to "open up the cells". That combined with a couple weeks of my body weight on the mattress and now going to sleep is an absolute delight. I'm 5'11, 188 lbs. I mold perfectly into it, but don't sink too far like I would with a Tempur Cloud or iComfort Revolution or Prodigy. I surf a lot which causes quite a bit of strain and soreness on the back muscles so having good support there is essential for me.

Also, I live in SoCal with no A/C in my place and surprisingly the heat factor on this Tempurpedic has been a non-issue this summer. I just sleep with one sheet and I'm good to go. If it's particularly hot I'll use a fan in my room, but that's something I would do on a regular coil bed. With the super soft memory foam mattress (of any brand) where you’re considerably enveloped in it, heat issues will always be more evident. But the Classic is great because you sink in enough so it relieves pressure and conforms to you, but you're still relatively close to the surface and don't have that non-supportive, heat-inducing “sunken” feeling of the ultra-soft mattresses. Don’t get me wrong, the Tempur Cloud and iComfort Revoloution felt wonderful in the store, but you have to think about how your body and back are going to react to it over the course of a 7-8 hour sleep session every night. It’s obviously a very personal choice, but my advice when going to memory foam would be to err on the side of a firmer mattress…based on reviews I’ve read and people I’ve spoken to. The Genius would’ve been my top choice if I went with iComfort, but the risk-adverse side of me won out and Tempurpedic Classic turned out to be a winner. Good luck everybody!

@Decisions or others, which is the water proof cover that you purchased recommended on this site?  Thanks

Poster above - Protect-a-bed premium cover fits well on this iComfort revolution bed.

Thanks for the update, and I'm thinking the same thing you are - maybe better to go firmer on a memory foam.  Genius has the 2" support foam underneath the 2 3/4" gel memory foam.

Also, the regular Tempurpedic Cloud has only 2.8" memory above the 5.x support foam - it is firmer than Could Supreme or Luxe mattress even though the top had 1.2" soft memory foam.

That said, about half the Tempurpedic reviews (150) on epinions are very negative about Tempurpedic.  But many are 5 stars too.

There are going to be good & bad reviews on every product/company out there. That goes outside the mattress arena as well. Gotta take all that w/a grain of salt. I love the Cloud Supreme, but I'm worried that it may not support me enough. However, I am only 130 lbs so maybe that is a non-issue at my weight.

Well like others I wish I had found this before I bought the mattress.  I went in without my fiancee one day since I was just looking around.  I called him at work while I was in the store and asked him to look at it online and he was too busy.  The salesman told me that the price might not last (it was about $1000 less than the tempurpedics) and I was leaving for a week for work.  Long story short, I convinced my fiancee that this one was great and he told me to just get it.  It was delivered this morning and it has a definite chemical smell to it.  I am letting it air out now and have an air freshener in there in hopes it will be better tonight.  It feels about the same as in the store when I first laid on it.  I am just hoping my fiancee likes it.  We had a inner spring pillow top and I could feel every move he made and it kept waking me up.  I was also waking up with bad hip pain and heard the foam mattresses are better.  We do have the option of trading it out after 28 days and have up to 120 days to try it.  I hated the pillow top and will never get another, but I'm worried about the foam.  We have had a foam topper from costco on my previous bed and he hated it.  He always said he felt like he couldn't move and was trapped.  Hope this doesn't happen, but the reviews do not give me a lot of faith.  I will try it out a few days and post again.

jmy75, what model of iComfort did you get?

-----------------------------------------------------

I've been 2 weeks on my Revolution.  Sleeping warm is not an issue any more.  It was 68 F room temperature this morning.  I did have to shelve the comforter and buy a much thinner quilt, so using top sheet and quilt only.... and wearing shorts.

It is more pressure relieving than the Stearns conventional bed I traded for it as it's more comfortable to lay on my injured right shoulder.  Support may not be enough though.  I have the slightest little tweak in my lower back in the mornings.  Will need more time to see if I can fully adjust.

Like most conventional beds where you push with hands in the hips area and it gives a little more, push in feet area, gives less .... this mattress also exhibits that.  I guess you can say it has 'broken in'.

So, I will need more time to see if I really get to like this mattress.  SleepEZ says give it at least 30 days or more to see if it's good enough.  If not, I might try a SleepEZ latex offering.
