My wife and I are enduring this bed until our comfort exchange arrives tomorrow.

We had them come out and perform a factory break in to help soften the mattress. Following that treatment the bed was 5% better. We both are experiencing back pain and restless sleep. The bed in the store was fairly comfortable and NOTHING like the bed that arrived in our home.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from I Comfort!

My wife and I were extremely excited for our California King Icomfort Insight. When it arrived, we were taken aback by the extremely strong smell. It was cold when the mattress was delivered on April 1st. The first 2-3 nights, it was unbearable to even enter the room due to the intense smell expelled from this mattress. We opened the windows completely even though it was 40 degrees outside, turned the bedroom ceiling fan on high, and had a space heater going in the room to at least keep it a little warmer. We did this for about 60 straight hours before finally being able to sleep in our new bed.

We let the bed air out before placing our Protect A Bed mattress protector over it. The smell was still present in moderate strength for the first 10 days then it became less noticeable. Our dog who sleeps with us in our room every night, would not enter our bedroom to sleep with us for 7 days due to the smell.

So once we were able to sleep on it, both my wife and I suffered from neck and lower back/hip soreness for the next 4-5 days(I am 29 she is 27 and we were both Collegiate athletes in great shape with no aches). On about the 6th day it finally was starting to feel comfortable for the next 2.5 weeks. Now at about the 3 week mark of having this mattress, the spot where I sleep already feels as though it has lost its firmness. Right where my buttocks hits the mattress, it now sinks straight in and doesnt provide ample support of my body. I am 6'6 240lbs in case you are wondering. So when I lay in the bed now, it feels as though my legs are elevated, it feels like my butt sinks way too far in and it feels like my head is way too high up even with a flat pillow or the memory foam pillow. It is giving me the hammock feeling most people hate.

Upon going back to our store, we were told that it may of been a manufacturing defect, and in all honesty, it may be. Nonetheless my wife and I decided that with the lack of feedback/reviews on this line and the bad experience we had, it would be wiser to try a more traditional mattress. We were afraid that if this could occur at 30 days with the memory foam losing its support/resistance, that what would it be like in 1-3 years. Also as you should also know, sleep innovations does provide an almost identical memory foam mattress at costco under the brand Novaform for less than 50% of the cost.

Date Purchased: April 2011
Price Paid: $1700
Recommend: No

Pros:

It slept cool....er, not different from a traditional bed.

Cons:

1. The smell
2. Lost firmness/resistance quickly, breaking down.
3. Gave body aches.
4. Price overinflated

Lower Back Pain

Me: 5' 9" and 175-180 lbs.

My perference and sleep style: I perfer a firm bed with just thin soft top cushion layer. I typically start sleep on my sides, but I will end up on my back. Once in a while, I start sleep on my stomach (which helps me when my lower back is really bothering me), but I still end up sleeping either on my sides or on my back.

Past Beds: I have had Simmon Beautyrest pillow top and Sealy Posturepedic Firm from Costo. The Simmon was great and was from 15 years ago. Although it was pillow top, it was quite firm. But after 12+ years, it was sagging. I then bought the Sealy Posturepedic from Costco. The Sealy is firm, but has multiple comfort layers (memory foam, latex foam, other foam). Sealy was comfortable. Unfortunately, it started to sag after 3 years. Once there is some sagging (just fraction of an inch), my butt sinks in and it causes my buttocks and lower back to ache. Due to Costco's excellent return policy, I was able to return this mattress.

While shopping for new mattress, I tried Tempurpedic. It was extremely comfortable. I ended up getting the Advantage bed, because it is the firmest and best to my liking, plus it is the lowest price for Tempurpedic.

My issue with Tempurpedic was also raised by others. My butt sinks into the memory foam and there is no support for my lower back. This causes pain in my lower back when I wake up. The pain moves around, from my buttocks into my lower back. The pain varies from just sore and ache on some days to excruciating pain. It was bad enough that I had to go see Physical Therapy at Kaiser.

Excluding the lower back pain, I did slept better in the Tempurpedic than innnerspring. On the tempurpedic, I only wake up once or none during the night; and I didn't have any neck or shoulder soreness. On innerspring, I typically wake up 4-5 times when I toss and turn; and every once in a while my neck or shoulder is sore.

I thought that my body has to adjust to the Tempurpedic. So I used it for 1-1/2 months. I also tried to use a thicker cushion (mattress pad) to reduce the heat transfer and to firm up the memory foam, but that still didn't prevent the back ache. So, after 1-1/2 months of suffering lower back pain, I cannot stand the pain anymore and I returned it.

As for the sleeping hot, yes, I do feel that memory foam sleeps hotter than normal beds. But that didn't bother me.

It is really too bad that I need more support; so Tempurpedic is not the right bed for me. But this doesn't mean it won't work for you. I think people who likes soft beds probably can find the Temperpedic a good match. Beds are personal preference, so you should try it and decide for yourself. If you are new to memory foam, just make sure you get the return policy in writing before you buy. I believe Tempurpedic has 90 day return policy, but that is with coupon hundred dollars in fees for shipping. I was able to negotiate with the mattress retail store to offer no fee return.
