Not sure how firm I want, I have a new costco/cacburyStearns&Foster mattress which is perfect but slightly not firm enough for lower back, want to make it slightly firmer but not change the feel too much, so I need help knowing which firmness level to get, is 1 inch enough and mostly which of these stores is best, thanks!  If you want to tell me which store is best I can go from there trial and error with firmness and size, thanks!

 

Ok, reading that FBM may be not as reliable as the other two, so lets delete them, which of the other two, one is a lot cheaper than the other, wonder why?

Sounds like sleepez will be the cheapest if you want 100% natural Latex International and some option to return.  If you return it might cost you a bit more, since the $49 is probably not refundable and you probably have to pay return shipping.

SLAB will charge shipping both ways as well (not as much as $49) and a small handling charge for a return.  Probably a smaller loss than sleepez.  SLAB will charge sales tax in California (I think that is where you live?).

yes, calif...ya know my theory, that if we all could afford the adjustbable beds, the electric ones that make the head or feet go up or down, we could use almost any mattress and resolve our problems, especially the ones like me with back aches...the slightest raising of either I think would make a world of difference, i may have to just buy one someday...i screwed up the quotes here, i am in bold, sandman is above that

Hmmm. That sounds like a contradiction, perfect but not firm enough for lower back?

It reads to me like it isn't perfect but is simply too soft and causing you back discomfort. Plus, it looks like they use plenty of PU foam in the S&F, so if anything it's only going to get softer in time. I've read many reviews that state S&F mattresses tend to break down and soften up faster than people expect. 

If the mattress is too soft to start with (and will get softer as it ages and the foam breaks down) will placing a firmer 1" latex topper gain you anything by way of supporting your back? 

I'm not trying to be negative, but I wonder if it's possible to harden a mattress in this manner. I know it's a grand hassle,  but if you are still within Costco's return/exchange timeframe, you may want to consider abandoning it and starting over with something firmer. 

I'm in pretty much the same boat. I have a new S&F 'luxury firm' spring mattress from Sears that is a little too soft for my lower back. I may be wrong, but I don't think either of us will gain much by way of support with a 1" topper. I need a firmer, more supportive mattress so I am returning the S&F. I've not yet sure decided what to replace it with, I'm still researching and demo'ing.

You can put down a "bridging layer" of very firm foam.. but then you have to start from scratch on comfort layer on top of that.

He might just "get lucky" that a piece firm enough to bridge the softer foam in the S&F is also soft enought to lie on, but I would not bet on it.

1 inch of firm poly is cheap at foamdistributing.com    Their HD36 (high density) product is nice quality, cheapl, and firm.  But you won't sleep on it, will need something soft on top of that.  Once you head down that road, you are using your expensive mattress as a substandard box spring.

Overstock.com  offers a (Serta, I think) product called "the rejuvenator" which felt pretty good ... just not to my liking.

1.5 inches of 4 lb memory foam bonded to 2.5 inches of very firm base PU  foam.  Was designed to bridge a crummy worn out mattress.  Friends who slept on that on a guest bed said it was the best mattress they had ever slept on.. and he owns a stearns bought a few years that he raved about back then.  If you like memory foam... not bad.  Think a queen was about $150+ delivered.

Good luck, this is all the Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder Show... like buying a mattress.
