Where can I buy an "old school" flippable spring coil mattress in Socal?

Hi,
I had surgery on on my back 25 years ago so I know what works for me and what doesn't.
I am not sure if what I am looking for has a name so I will describe as best as I can.
I am looking for a soft but springy mattress without the foam padding, where when you lie down your body sinks right in but the springs push back giving you support. The kind you can jump up and down on like a Trampoline - or if you are doing the deed people can hear the squeak of the springs in the next room. None of this foam padding stuff that the newer beds all seem to have.
I had a bed like this in the early 90's that I bought from a hotel after sleeping really wee during my stay, they agreed to sell me one. Kept for 10 years and foolishly replaced with a much more expensive and far inferior product.
I was reminded of just how well I used to sleep on it when I stayed at an older Ramada Inn in Houma LA a couple years ago that had this type of mattress. They told me it was a BEMCO but unfortunately refused to sell me one.
BEMCO does not do business on the West coast and in any case from looking at their web site, they may no longer make the old school mattresses.
Any suggestions on where I could find a mattress like this in SoCal? I would be willing to wait for a custom order.

Many thanks - I watched their video. My concern is in the video they still talk about adding padding to soften as otherwise "too firm" mattress.
For me anyway, this is the wrong approach. They key for me is while I need I soft bed - I need the softness to come from the springs themselves not the padding. My spine is not like normal person's spine - its fused and completely rigid with steel rods through about 7 veterbrae levels, and has a rigid forward kink in the cervical spine - as a result of which I cannot lie flat on my back on the floor like a normal person but rather when flat on my back on the floor I need 6 inches or so of phone books under my head to keep my cervical spine in its natural comfortable alignment position.
So if I lie on a mattress that derives its softness from the springs rather than the padding, my buttocks will naturally push the mattress down several inches compared to my head - the whole mattress should yield, not just a localized area where the pressure point is. Furthermore, it will quickly spring back when I roll over in my sleep which I do a lot = comfortable.
On the other hand with a too firm, or superficially soft due to padding, my head cannot find its normal position relative to my curved but rigid spine, as a result of which I often wake up with uncomfortable muscle spasms in my neck.

Try McRoskey:
http://mcroskey.com
We purchased a McRoskey about 4 or 5 years ago and I love it. When I called McRoskey before ordering, they were more than helpful and there was absolutely no sales pitch what-so-ever. They've been making traditional two sided spring mattresses for over a century. They offer various comfort levels with varying amounts of cotton padding. They are based in S.F., but according to their website, you can see their mattress at the Pacific Design Center in L.A. I ordered mine over the phone and had it shipped to NYC, but their S.F. store supposedly has a mattress on the ground right outside their front door for customers and passers-by to jump up and down on.
Good luck.

I agree that you should consider Custom Comfort. I bought a latex bed from them that I ended up returning, but I do think it's a pretty good company, and since they build everything in their factory, they can make a bed suited to your needs. Another place you might look at is the Escondido Mattress Factory. I visited their showroom while I was shopping for a mattress, and everything they do is custom as well. Good luck!

sager66, are you familiar with this company or their mattresses? They do seem better than average. I wonder how they are...? I may visit their new showroom near here, just to see what they're all about... not that I will buy a mattress right now but maybe in the future... Looking at their site, I am sort of impressed but don't like their "comfort" policy too much. Nevertheless their materials and approach to mattress making seems far superior to most S companies. "The Custom Comfort "Comfort Commitment” 1. We offer comfort adjustments (firmer or softer) on most mattresses (sets) we provide. Individual mattress classifications/types have unique characteristics so they cannot be adjusted to duplicate the feel of another mattress type. We are here to help if your new mattress needs to be made a little firmer or softer. This is intended to “fine-tune” your mattress and is a minor adjustment (one adjustment included with no charge for labor). 2. You must give your body ample time to get used to your new mattress (set). We recommend a period of at least two (2) weeks before you contact us for an adjustment. Custom Comfort reserves the right to postpone service until two weeks from the date of delivery. Custom Comfort will make one adjustment (firmer or softer) with no labor charge within thirty (30) days of delivery. Custom Comfort is not bound or obligated to resolve comfort issues after thirty (30) days from the date of delivery. Services provided for comfort issues will be done at the sole discretion of Custom Comfort. 3. Adding extra padding or a pillow-top, or upgrading to higher quality cushioning materials or coils will incur a charge due before the service is performed. There are no refunds for any services, additions, or upgrades provided. Additionally, there are no refunds when something is removed due to the fact that it has been used. Transportation costs are the sole responsibility of the consumer. This service is available exclusively to the original purchaser."

jimsocal As I mentioned in my FSF rant the other day, my wife and I eventually ended up at Custom Comfort and we were thoroughly impressed. We ended up buying two mattresses from them: the Solace Quilt for our 3 year old and a Royal Elegance for us. We tried the Royal Elegance for several weeks though and were unable to really get comfortable, and I was getting lower back pain (back sleeper). Just didnt' seem like the latex topper was supporting me. Sure feels fantastic though if you just lay on it for ten minutes! So we called them and they came and picked the mattress up and we are going back into the store this weekend to determine how we are going to proceed. I'm not sure they have much of a return policy - but they are very willing to re-work the mattress for us to try and get the right comfort level. I suspect that we are just going to have them remove the topper and then we'll worry about our own topper later if we decide we want one. Unfortunately, it sounds like we are going to eat the cost of the topper as originally purchased. We'll see what they can come up with for us - I'll report back. As far as customer service, friendliness, and pride of workmanship - top notch experience. My expectation is that the mattress is going to be very sturdy over the years, of course time will tell. Worth a visit.

John, Have you considered an adjustable bed? I purchased one from Electrosonic in Burbank (they have one in Orange County too). I got a Leggett & Platt adjustable bed there...many other bed stores carry them too, the model I got though had limited availability. I have all sorts of neck and back issues (very stiff spine), hip and it seems like the whole body problems, and I sleep with my head slightly elevated (as well as my feet) which I really like as it gives me good cervical support. It sounds like it might be a lot easier to manage for you and you also can get a lot of height options for your head that way. The only gotcha is that adjustable beds can't use a springs mattress...they need foam or latex because of the bending motions. I put a FloBeds mattress on top and it really works well for me. The other advantage there is that I bought a VZone so I was able to make the zones under my head and feet very soft while the lumbar and hips remained firm for support. Here's the link to their website if you want to read more about it...http://www.lpadjustablebeds.com/. There are other brands out there but from I what I learned L&P have been making them the longest. Good luck! TJ

I am familiar with the company as I made many visits there and the original latex mattress I purchased was a Custom Comfort latex mattress. I can't really speak to their mattresses with innersprings except for the fact that I did wander around and lie on a few, I watched the videos on how their mattresses are made, and I looked at their sample cutaways of their box springs and mattresses, which all seemed to be first rate construction. Here was my experience with the latex mattress, which is why I wouldn't purchase from them again (the feeling is probably mutual-I don't think they would do business with me either). I visited the store several times while I was learning about latex mattresses, and lay on their latex models for extended periods over several visits. I loved the floor models and decided on their #3 model. They told me the core was 32 ILD with a softer layer on the top and the bottom (to make it flippable). I decided to order the mattress and foundation. When it arrived, it was so soft I was bottoming out badly (remember I'm over 250lb). I phoned them about it, and they looked up the mattress they built for me, and told me the core was 28 ILD. Well that would be way too soft for me at my weight, and probably too soft for most people. I told them I was bottoming out and it was hurting my back. They denied there was any issue with them delivering a bed that was 4 ILD softer than what they told me was in the mattress. They asked me what I wanted, expressing it in terms of 10% harder? 20%? How much harder did I want? They seemed to have little knowledge (compared, for example, to Flobeds) about making ILD recommendations, and as a consumer new to latex, I was at a loss as to how to express how much firmer I needed it in terms of a percentage difference over the 28 ILD. They told me it would take a week for them to pick up the mattress and take it back to adjust the firmness. At that time, I realized that the extended timeframe to get the mattress back to them, have it remade and redelivered, in combination with the uncertainty about how much firmer I needed them to make the bed, meant that their "30 day comfort guarantee" was not a very good guarantee and that I might be stuck with a very expensive purchase that wasn't right for my sleeping needs. I called them back and told them I wanted to return the mattress because they didn't deliver what they told me the mattress was. After some lengthy arguing with the sales manager, he agreed, and told me their delivery people would be there within the next two hours to pick up the mattress. Well this surprised me even further, because when I wanted the comfort exchange, it was going to take them a whole week to get around to picking up my mattress. At that point, I knew I had made the right decision to make them take the mattress back. Sure enough, the guys came within two hours and picked up my mattress, and I received a full refund. Then I was left thinking, "what the hey? they were going to take a whole week to pick up my mattress for a comfort ajustment, but when they finally agree to take the mattress back for a refund, they suddenly have someone who can be there in 2 hours?" I liked the shop, they had a nice setup. I loved the feel of the latex mattress floor models. I was impressed by the quality of the mattresses (latex and traditional spring mattresses) and their construction. I was a lot less happy with the fact that they had poor quality control over the latex they deliver compared to the latex they represent on the showroom floor, and I was a lot less happy with the "comfort guarantee," particularly when I discovered that most of that 30 day period was going to be eaten up with the time it was going to take them to get around to pick up my bed for the "comfort adjustment." I regretted being a coward about ordering a latex mattress from a latex mattress specialty company over the internet. My husband was furious that I fought with CC and returned the mattress without consulting him. We had to kick my daughter out of her bedroom and sleep on her uncomfortable full bed for several days (her cheap S brand mattress has cratered even though it's just a few years old) while we waited for the Flobed to arrive. He was so furious with me he refused to help me set it up and I had to struggle with it on my own. Now, he just loves the Flobed. I could not be happier that I stuck to my guns and went though that unpleasantness about returning the CC mattress, because I have had nothing but courteous, expert and prompt service from Flobeds. Since I ended up with a mattress that's considerably firmer than the floor model CC mattress, I feel I probably would have run out of "Comfort Guarantee" time before getting the CC bed properly adjusted to my needs. Having said all that, I do believe their area of expertise is in the traditional spring mattresses, and they don't use any cheap PU foam in them. I believe they are made the old fashioned way with quality materials and high quality construction, and flippable. If traditional mattress is the way you want to go, I think CC could be an excellent choice! I just think they need to adjust their sales model on the latex mattresses . . .

The last time I was there the 100% natural organic mattresses were made by a company called OMI or something like that. I used to have a link to the website, but I've lost it. They touted themselves as the US's only 100% organic mattress manufacturer. They had insane organic requirements like the workers couldn't wear any shoes or clothes that had leather and I don't remember what else. I was told the factory was clean enough to eat off the floor. The prices matched - a queen bed was something like $5k. And I didn't find them very comfortable when I tried them in the store - I think they were Dunlop. Anyway, not sure if this is the same CC is now showing as their organic latex series.

Actually, you can use almost any Simmons mattress with an adjustable bed. We were told this at two different mattress stores and also at Macy's. I'm sure Budgy will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's do the individually pocketed coils.

Thanks for the info on Custom Comfort. From looking at their site, I was impressed with their mattresses, especially the spring mattresses, but as I noted by printing their "Guarantee" policy, it isn't the best in the business. But actually from my experience, it seems many of the "better" mattress companies do not have very good "sleep trials". I'll be curious how you like your's NoFSF. Please do post a review once you get a new one that is more to your liking. Kimberly and NoFSF, do you mind telling me which branch it was that you dealt with? Apparently they have a number of stores in the SoCal area. If you don't want to state which one publicly you could send me a private message instead and I will keep it to myself. I plan to go into one of their stores soon to check them out.

Thank you for posting about Custom Comfort... I just found this thread. I was kicking myself for not making the 2 hr drive to Orange County from Thousand Oaks to shop for their beds.. It really seems as though nobody likes ANY bed that isn't a Flo bed type where you build your own..

Our experience is also from the Custom Comfort store in Mission Viejo. I must say that from a customer service perspective and just an overall shopping experience rating, my wife and I simply could not be more impressed. As mentioned previously, we did test their 'comfort guarantee' program and had them pick up our mattress to be re-worked. We originally purchased their 'Royal Elegance' model, which is a fairly high-end mattress, but uses a medium-firm coil and has a sewn-in latex pillow top. Super comfortable in the store, but after sleeping on it for several weeks we both realized that we made a potentially costly mistake and should have just went with a nice, high-quality firm mattress and then worried about doing a topper separately if we needed to. That was, in fact, our original plan - but we both liked the feel of the Royal Elegance in the showroom and so we strayed from our game plan. Ultimately we just didn't think we were getting enough support from the Royal Elegance model. They held the mattress for us for a week until we could get back up to the store to figure out how to move forward. A big concern in having our mattress re-worked was that we paid >$500 to go from the Royal Plush (standard plush-top mattress in Impressionist Collection) to the Royal Elegance with the latex topper. At a minimum, we knew that we wanted the topper removed but I would have been rather disappointed if we ended up with a Royal Plush (same bed minus the latex topper), with no adjustment in price. That would have been a fairly expensive lesson for us. But they were very accomodating in listening to our concerns and working with us to determine the right comfort level, and they are re-working our mattress into their Portare model - which is their highest end plush mattress. It has a higher quality and stiffer coil and three layers of cotton batting on each side. This is a very supportive mattress with a soft, plush top - that we can build up from if we need to add more cushion. I think it's perfect as-is, my wife may want to eventually cusion her side a bit more. Time will tell. The Portare is essentially the same price as the Royal Elegance (which had a latex topper) and so CCM is re-working it for us at no charge. We did not go in looking for a refund, we need a mattress and we really like the way that the Trudell family runs their business. So I can't say how that conversation would have went. However, I think that the solution that we reached is more than fair and my wife and I are both relieved that we are going to end up at our original target without any additional expense. And we did not have to argue, complain, write letters, make phone calls, etc. to get from here to there. We continue to be impressed with CCM and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a high-quality inner spring mattress. They do have latex and foam models as well - and they seemed pretty comfortable as well. However, I would agree that inner spring seems to be their specialty and you can probably do better in terms of latex by shopping online. CCM's latex beds are pre-built - not build-as-you-go like Flobeds or SpeepEZ, so you would lose the flexibility of being able to tailor the bed to your specific preferences. To me, this is one of the biggest attractions of the latex layered bed models.

John, I bought a queen size (no topper) flippable inner spring mattress three years ago from a local family owned Newport Bedding Company in Newport Beach. It seems to be a well constructed mattress and is holding up well. I like a firm feel but realized that the bed I bought was designed to support a person twice my size. I have chosen to add a separate latex (removable) topper to give it some cush. Good luck.

I came across this forum and found a question by john960bell. I have been looking for the same kind of mattress for years. I need it so my shoulders have no resistance. John960bell, have you been able to find such a mattress? Does anyone know of an "old-school flippable spring coil mattress" that feels like a trampoline or big rubber band? A mattress that will allow my scrawny shoulders to sink in without resistance? I have tried latex and memory foam, etc. Let me know john960bell if you have found a mattress company. I live near Chicago, if that helps anyone. Thanks so much.

There are probably quite a few custom manufacturers who would build you what you wanted and give you a choice of innerspring and custom comfort layers. I'll take a look and see what is in my list but in the meantime ... your "shoulder issue" seems to be one of the more common issues of the past little while here. There is another solution which works for many and that is a zoning system (not the ones that are usually built into innersprings or latex cores as they are often not "different" enough) where the upper part of the mattress is made softer than the hip/middle area by using two different layers of different ILD's in the upper part and the lower part of your mattress. This gives you a flat mattress but allows the shoulders to sink in significantly more than "normal" and it seems to solve a lot of issues like yours. There are even mattresses like this one http://www.huggingmattress.com/index.php and this one http://www.oromedhealthcare.com/recess-mattress.php that could have some "extra" benefits (smiling). I was on the mygreenmattress site today (they are the same company as the quality sleep link) looking at something else for another thread and they showed this http://www.mygreenmattress.com/view_products/pureecho_illustration.htm for $399 queen which looks pretty "springy" to me. They will also make it 2 sided for 20% more. Of course the quality sleep side of the business would have more options but they don't have specific illustrations of the inside of the mattress like this one so I thought I'd put it here since they are close by in Lagrange highlands and brookfield. They have a 5 zoned innerspring and spring/latex options which may work as well as others so hopefully something there would work for you and they are one of the few from the list that would be close enough to actually try them.
