What is an "S brand mattress" ? And are Macy's beds marked WAY up or are they really higher quality?

I see so many posts were people are refrencing an "S brand mattress".  What is that?

Also, does everyone agree that Macy's prices are marked up about 4 times to much?  Or are they really a higher quality than the individual dealers who sell multiple brands?

'S' brand refers to the big three - Sealy, Simmons and Serta (Stearns and Foster is part of Sealy).

Macy's beds - I've seen Posturepedics, Perfect Sleepers, Beautyrests, S&F's, 'Hotel Collection'.  Around memorial, they had 2011 model Posturepedics up well over $1k in twin.  Then in July, they had same beds well under $1k.  Weird as Memorial Day is thee sales time of the year.

Macy's sells multiple brands.  I don't think they are 'higher quality' than like, Sleep Train here.  Macy's Stearns and Foster's are the same as Sleep Train's, just different names.  That's a well known trick used in the mattress industry.

-------------------------------------

One huge thing about buying a bed ----  Make sure you can get a refund on your first set, know the terms and how much restocking fee if not satisfied.

#2 - If they offer 'exchange' to another set if not satisfied, most likely, that second set will be yours for good.  I would never do an exchange again.  If I don't like the first mattress, I get the money back. Period.  (I have a one monthy old $1500 Serta icomfort sitting in living room I'm going to have to pawn off for hopefully $100, or I may have to pay $80 to dump it, it's too soft).

Neiman, you do have lots of questions.  "S" brands refer What were the top 4 "brands" sold in the US: Sealy, Serta, Simmons and Spring Air.  They are also representative of what are often thought of a "conventional" mattresses.  As to Macys and all department stores in general, they do have to use higher initial markups to off-set their promotional pricing, which is when they sell the majority of mattresses.  They also usually have liberal return policies, although I have heard they are not as liberal as they used to be.  This has to be factored into their pricing.  Unfortunately there does need to be a profit or businesses go out of business.

Got it, thanks.

Some posts say that "all pillow tops" will wear out prematurly because of the cheap, thin poly but then i see posts that say as long as the poly is high quality they will be ok.  I am still pretty confused.  Are Aireloom pillow tops concidered low quality or high quality?  I have verified that the 54% of latex in the bed is high quality so i HOPE the poly foam is high quality too...how do i find out for sure?
