What Happened to Quality? Any Good Brands Left?

Does anybody consistently make a good mattress anymore? Or is the mattress industry just a big joke? Who makes a QUALITY product these days?

It seems like no two stores sell the same mattress. And oddly enough, each store will recommend one brand over another. I just want to know if there is a brand out there still making quality mattresses. Sterns & Foster? Chatham & Wells? Aireloom?

My wife and I will gladly pay $3,000 for a mattress if it means we'll be getting a good night's sleep for the next 10-20 years. But, of course each mattress feels like heaven on the showroom floor. I'm concerned that 6 months down the line, the comfy mattress we loved in the store will start sagging as the foam gives out (and it seems like you can't avoid the foam mattresses these days - even the FIRM still seem to end up with 6 inches of foam in them).

We're looking for...

- Firm to Super Firm
- Cal King
- Durability
- No pillow tops
- Willing to spend up to $3500
- No TEMPURPEDIC

We liked a Chatham & Wells as well as an Aireloom (foam encased model, a step down from their handcrafted product line). Both were pricey. We're wondering if the price is justified or if it's all marketing.

Any feedback is welcome. I'm a stomach sleeper, my wife a side sleeper (which probably rules out the super firm). If you're in a similar situation, what mattress are you happy with?

Even if you find a custom mattress maker in your area that assembles high quality components, only time will tell if the configuration you choose is actually compatible with your personal comfort preferences.  It usually takes several tries to get it right, which is why most forum members choose to assemble their own.

This is the sad, sad reality almost all of us realized and the reason we hang out on this forum even years after our purchase. The current mainstream mattresses are not made as well as they were 5 years ago, much less 20. Just try to buy a two-sided mattress with a real box-spring with springs.

Fortunately there are some companies still making good mattresses. Unfortunately they are way too expensive for the average person and often sold in only one or two stores in the US. The list would include VI-Spring, Hastens, McRoskey, Relyon, the high-end Shifmans and also local brands like Charles H. Beckley and a few others. Most of these are still hand-made and high quality but can easily run $4,000 to $50,000 depending on what your looking at.

This is the reason so many choose to build their own all-latex mattress. I personally don't like latex, but it is the only cheap way to get a long lasting custom mattress.
