I have a king size Sealy that's 10 years old and in great shape still. ....it's a firm or a very firm but think it's a firm and it doesn'thave a pillow top. Over the last few years I been having back and neck problems. I have herniated discs in neck and back. Ibought this mattress when the belief was the firmer the better and have since reliazed this isn't always so.

 I'm 5 ft 7 and weigh about 145 lbs

I want to add a latex topper to keep the spine in line hopefully it helps with the pain.

The thing is I don't know what type of coils or the gauge of this Sealy mattress I have which would help me with choosing what type of

ILD latex to get.. This will help me in making my final decision. I know I want 3 different layers at 1 inch each so I can swap them around. EventuallyI want to build it up to about 10 inches ( I only have funds for 3 inches now ) and use my box spring as the platform.

I need some relief now and can't wait till I have the extra funds for all of it now so 3 inches (layers) will have to do for now.So does anyone know what type of coils / gauge this 10 year old Sealy might have ?

at sleep country they told me that sealy has been usuing the same triple offset coils for 20 years... don't know if that's true or not... and the gauge of my 'too firm' bed is 14. something or other...

Rainer, please consider that it could be possible that your Firm Sealy could still be sagging in the middle and thus your back pain. I'd try a medium topper, something like a 24-28ILD, if you're just buying one inch. If you're buying 3 inches, try a 32, a 24 and an 18. Or a 32, 28 and 20, something in those ranges...

IF the bed still gives you back pain I'd try doing mattress surgery on it and putting 2-3" of latex over the springs, get rid of the 1-2" of pu foam that are in there now, completely spent and likely causing you back pain.

As to what type of springs I have, I need to brush up on my spring knowledge, but if you look at this thread below, it features a Sealy from CostCo that I bought about 7-8 years ago, probably the same springs you have in yours: (As I recall, there is a photo of the springs here) While I don't know the gauge of the springs I would guess they are around 14 gauge, and you have to consider that they also might be worn out after 10 years.

Hi Jim

My back and neck pain is from an accident but the mattress isn't helping due to it being firm.I been OK with the firmness until the accident.

Before the accident I really wanted somehing a little softer but it didn't cause me to lose any sleep but not I need to get my spine in line due to the herniated discs.

I thought of doing Mattress surgery and that will be my next step for sure if the 3 one inch topper doesn't work. I actually really want to do the surgery first (Yes I read alot of the posts here :) ) but don't want to get into that job at this time.

I will look into the ILD's you suggest and will also check out the thread you mentioned.

What about he tag that each mattress comes with that can't be pulled off...shouldn't there be some kind of code that would let the maker would identify what kind of mattress it is ?  If so I wonder if anyone knows how to decode it ?
