Need an advice on using a topper on my old pillow top

Hello!

Given what I've read so far, comments are very informative and helpful. Many thanks for your time and effort.

Here is my situation. My wife and I have been using a pillow top mattress (Sealy) for more than 4 years. The mattress started sagging, making us feel uncomfortable and tired even after long hours of sleep (indentations on both sides with a bump in the middle). Unfortunately, I don't think they are severe enough for a warranty coverage. I now realize I should not purchased a pillow top in the first place.

Anyway, I was thinking about getting a topper as a "temp" solution (I don't intend to buy a new mattress within the next year). Here are my questions:

Can I use a topper on top of a pillow-top mattress? If yes, can it be a memory foam or should it be a latex one, or else? (and why?)

If not, can I use the other side of the mattress (non-pillow side) instead with a topper (and which type?)? How about the option of getting rid of the pillow top and replacing it with a topper?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Most mattresses these days are "no flip," meaning you can't really use the other side of the mattress.

There are quite a few people on this forum who like to perform "mattress surgery," that is, they carefully cut around the top of the mattress, remove the cheap quality and degraded foam the big "S" mattress companies are now using, and replace the old foam with higher quality foam.  The top of the mattress then carefully replaced, and velcro or a mattress pad keeps the whole thing together.  If you do a bit of hunting, you'll be able to find several recent forum posts on this subject, some of them accompanied with detailed photos of the process.

Thanks Kimberly. I was able to decompose the pillow part nicely with no mess. Thankfully, the condition of the remaining mattress was good. It was just the pillow top part that got mostly indented. I tried out a new topper last night. This morning I feel much better :)
