Like some others on this site, I just ordered the Sleep Science Latex Mattress from Costco. The mattress cover is basically all polyester according to customer service. My question is, although Latex mattresses are not supposed to sleep hot, will the synthetic cover trap in body heat and keep the mattress warm? Does it make sense to spend money on purchasing a cotton (or another natural material) cover? I'm not overly concerned about sleeping on the polyester as I will have my own fitted sheets against my skin. I'm only worried about it holding in the heat. Any thoughts?

synthetic is definitely not optimal, but a whole new cover is a pretty expensive way to improve the breathability.  i think what you should try first (if heat becomes an issue) is to get a cotton or wool filled mattress pad/protector to put on top.  for many people that have had heat issues wtih mattresses a good quality pad has made a world of difference.

Hi Becky... mine is on order too.  I had same question, but more concerned about water resistance, so sweat doesn't slowly start to breakdown the latex over time (I want this bed to last).

Claims to be very think and breathable, with moisture protection.

Anyone else have a recommendation or thoughts on the tempur protector?

i sell the tempur protectors as well.  personally I don't think these types of protectors are nearly as breathable as manufacturers claim them to be.  I think they can call them breathable because the cotton terry itself is breathable. but really the polyester cover on the mattress is far more breathable than a completely water proof membrane.  usually a wool filled pad offers plenty of protection from moisture unless you were going to completely spill something on the mattress.  wool will absorb roughly 30% of its weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch, so the perspiration we all give off throughout the night is typically easily dealt with.  I would also keep in mind that latex is not nearly as sensitive to moisture damage as Tempur material.  but if you really want it to be water proof I would actually consider doing the water proof cover directly over the bed and then an additional cotton or wool filled pad over top to actually deal with the moisture.  you don't just want to keep it out of the mattress you want to keep it away from your body as it is actually our perspiration which amplifies temperature concerns and a thin layer of cotton terry with a low GSM is not going to absorb all of this moisture and keep you dry.

personally I think Natura makes a good one, because you can actually machine wash it.  they also have a new version of it which actually has a built in water proof membrane right on the back of it and still has the wool quilted on top.  there are other good ones out there too.  St. Dormier (made by St. Geneve, maker of some of the finest linens in the world) has a non water proof wool pad as well that is also machine washable.

We appreciate the input from individuals who have first-hand experience selling mattresses and their associated toppers. But we just need to know, up front, what their positions actually are. So please, give us some background.

i am a part owner of a small family business (retail).  its just a one store thing for now, we definitely focus on carrying higher end products.  we have a small selection of standard coil mattresses from major brands and a fairly large selection of what most stores would consider specialty is actually our bread and butter.   we also specialize in very high quality bedding (hand made iron beds, custom fine linens, duvets, etc).  For me coming to this forum is like going to any other forum I go to online, mostly to just help out, especially since we are Canadian there are very few products I would actually even be allowed to sell in the US as it would violate dealership agreements with certain brands I carry.   By all means though please let me know if I am over-stepping any boundaries, I really don't want to come across as self serving because in reality I probably have nothing to gain here other than valuable insight into peoples frustrations with mainstream companies.
