I am very frustrutted about the whole mattress buying process.  My daughter developed a back pain problem and can't sleep on the old sagging mattress.  So I first bought a luxury firm mattress from Costco (Springport Firm).  It is still too soft for her and she still has back pain in the morning.  She slept on an old matrress in the guest room that is a little firmer and her back pain problem went away.  So I return that mattress back to Costco. We went to Sleepys and tried a Posturpedic ultra firm mattress.  She seems like that better.  We just got that mattress delivered.  Now this mattress seems a little too firm without much cushion.

 

I read on this forum that it is better to buy a firmer mattress and you can always add topper to make it soft.  So here are my questions:

1.       What is the easiest way to add topper?  I don’t want to do mattress surgery at this point if I don’t have to.  Can I just buy a topper to put on the firm mattress?  What should I buy and where to buy it?  I just want to buy a topper that will make this firm mattress a little soft but not too much soft.  I look at Costco mattress topper and they are all 3” memory type that I think will probably make the mattress too soft. 

2.       I would also like to buy the topper from the source that will allow return if it does not work for her.  There are just too many uncertainties around this whole mattress buying business.

No need to do any surgery on a too-firm mattress. That's reserved for beds like pillowtops where the cheap foam topping is sagging and indented. A firm mattress is a great start because you can add toppers to make it just the right softness, which is what I and many others here did.

There's a huge variety of toppers out there, from wool to latex foam, and in a variety of thicknesses and softness. A very popular choice here is Foam by Mail (the Foam Factory)

They have latex toppers of various sizes and softness levels. You could start with a 2" soft layer, then add maybe another 1" softer/firmer layer if needed.

If you state your general location, someone may be able to tell you where to go to see and test latex toppers.

Thank you so much for the help.  We live in Ellicott City, MD 21042 (just south of Baltimore City).  This is exactly the uncertainty (issue) I have.  I have no idea what latex topper feel like and what level of softness (firmness) I should get.  I also check the foam factory website.  The latex topper seems pretty expensive (about $100 for 1” topper in Queen Size).  They seem also charge 25% restocking fee if you return it.  Is that correct?

I am desperately trying to get this mattress to work for us.  I could use all the help I can get.  Someone please tell me where I can go to test the latex topper.
