Hastens on platform bed

Hello all,

I am shopping for new bedroom furniture and found a platform bed that I like.  I am considering purchasing a Hastens mattress and am wondering if anyone has a Hastens mattress on a platform bed frame (no box spring).  I know the mattress will feel firmer without the box spring, I'm just wondering how different it will feel with regard to responsiveness, etc.  I stopped in at a Hastens store and tried the 2000T and the Excelsior.  The sales person said that they sell many without the box spring and have had no complaints.  I plan to go back to the store and they will put the mattress on the floor so that I can get a better feel.  I appreciate your input.  Thank you.

Karsha, when you're talking about high-end traditional mattresses, chances are slim to none that you'll get the same comfort level without a box spring.  We went the same route with McRoskey (see my other post from today for details), and on a wood slat platform their "Gentle" mattress was simply too firm, and toppers only made the situation worse.

You may be able to get away with it, if you're a back (or maybe stomach) sleeper.  But for side-sleepers, the box spring is what provides that crucial 1-1.5" extra give for your shoulders.  This is what prevents your shoulders from sitting too high (and as a result, your hips sinking too low) on the mattress.

JimBC,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with placing a McRoskey on on a wood slat platform bed frame.  Oddly enough, we have a Queen McRoskey Gentle Firm (from when they had 5 different comfort levels instead of 4).  I love it, but now want to get a King on a slat platform frame, just because I like the low profile look.  Since McRoskey's tend to run firmer than Hastens, I figured it would be too firm on a platform. I was hoping a soft Hastens would be a different story.  I'm afraid you might be right about not using the box spring with the Hastens.  I've also had a shoulder injury since purchasing the McRoskey 4+ years ago, so I think I need that extra give.

Thanks so much and good luck with your McRoskey - I hope you love it as much as we love ours.

Karsha, you're welcome!  When you go back to the Hastens store, if the Excel feels too firm on the floor, try their Superia model.  It uses 15cm, 8-turn springs instead of the Excel's 13cm, 6-turn springs.  The extra coil height in the mattress will probably make much more of a difference on a platform bed.

You can always add a box spring later, if you find you need it.  Hastens was our first choice for a mattress (nothing beats cotton, wool and horsehair for comfort layers), but boy are they expensive!

Good luck, and please let us know how it works for you.

Jim - Thank you so much.  I will certainly add the Superia to my list when I return to Hastens.
