Can anyone tell me how a convoluted latex topper differs from a regular latex topper of the same ILD?

Specifically, the Latex International talalay convoluted topper and the LI talatech topper, both 19 ILD. I'm mostly wondering if the convoluted topper feels softer or about the same.

My new mattress is firmer than anticipated, so I'm looking to add 1" of talalay latex to soften things up. The quest for a perfect mattress is never-ending, apparently.

I'm not an expert, but I experimented with a Flobeds mattress by rearranging various combinations of latex pads. I thought I'd like the latex, and I really want a natural material, but I couldn't get one that felt just right. What I think I want is a firm foundation, with a plush, giving layer on top. I pulled out my old futon which, on its own, is like sleeping on concrete! I put different latex pads on top of it, thinking I might just go with a topper over the futon. I found all the 3" pads to feel too bouncy for my taste, regardless of their ILDs. It seems to be the nature of the 100% natural latex. I tried one of their convoluted pads, but it wasn't enough cushioning. What I did like was two convoluted pads with their molded surfaces facing each other. over the futon. If you're starting with something more cushy than a futon, one might be enough. The convolutions cut down on the bouncy, or rubbery, sensation I didn't like with the solid pads.

To answer your question more directly, about half of the latex is cut away in a convoluted pad (think egg crate instead of solid thick cardboard), making it feel softer, but offering less cushioning, than a solid topper. It feels cushioned without being weirdly bouncy.

I wish you luck. I also found this process a lot more involved and expensive than I envisioned.

Thanks for the response. :-) I believe my latex experimentation phase has come to an end, but I wish you success in creating your perfect sleeping surface with it.
