1-800-mattress double sided innerspring good for DIYing?

I'm looking for a good basic innerspring mattress, in a firm configuration so it doesn't have a lot of crap foam, that I can then customize with a couple latex or memory foam toppers to get my dream bed. After trying a few all-foam beds I find I still like having an innerspring somewhere better than just foam, even if its very good foam.

I notice that dial-a-mattress. aka 1-800-mattress (who have actually recently been bought out by one of the big mattress chains) still carry a line of "CEO's Private Collection" doublesided (flippable) innerspring mattresses, at quite reasonable prices (@$600 for a king mattress alone). They claim these are high quality mattresses, but private label made for them by a local company (Rex Bedding, of whom I can find very little on the net).

These are described as having 312 coil 13 gauge bonnel springs. Anyone know if this is any good or not?

Find out what gauge the springs are if you can. I have bonnell coils in my Englander, but they're 12.5 gauge which is very firm - maybe too firm for me, not sure. But I think usually they are more like 13 or 13.5 which is less firm.

I would say it should work, but if could spend a bit more I might be inclined to get a Sealy (one of the better ones) or S&F because I believe Budgy said they have pretty good springs.

13 gauge. Oh, I don't think Sealy makes flippables anymore.

No, I'm sure Sealy doesn't make flippables. I doubt if any SCo does any more.

I wouldn't be opposed to trying that flippable if I were you. Nothing really wrong with Bonnells. Mine seem like they might be a bit TOO firm at 12.5 gauge, so this one, at 13, might be just right.

if you are going to do a DIY build presumably this will be with better quality upholstery, if we were to assume you are using latex then you really won't have much of a need to flip the mattress.  very few coils (only one that I know of actually) are designed specifically for one sided mattresses, basically all non-flip beds use symmetrical coils that could be used for a flippable build.

Rex Bedding makes an excellent old style handcrafted mattress. Much of what they do is still done by hand in their NJ plant. They have varying quality mattresses depending on your comfort level and budget and are all 2-sided mattresses.

Rex must operate in a stealth mode, since a websearch for them finds only a few listings in net business directories. No retailers, and no company website.

Very old Bedding Manufacturer. They don't spend much on technology but they do however make an excellent bed. They do manufacture for many people but the Retailers use their own private label name. They even make Visco and Latex bedding

and lastly sofa bed mattresses. 1800 and Sleepy's do sell Rex bedding uder the Rex name.

Thanks for the lead for a double-sided flippable firm mattress that won't break the bank.  After a lot of research, I was able to contact Rex Bedding and find out who sells their double-sided flippable mattresses in the NYC area.  There are three stores on the Bowery in Chinatown that sell it, J & K Home Furnishings, Olivia Furniture and International Furniture at 113 Bowery. In the Bronx, Corner Furniture on White Plain Road also sells this mattress.  Based on Yelp/Google reviews, I went to International.  The mattress does not have the Rex Bedding label, but when I asked the sales staffer, Annie, she confirmed it was made by Rex.  It is a very firm mattress. (They also have one that is slightly less firm) and it is a great value. With boxspring and tax it cost $530.  No pain or aches in the AM after sleeping on this mattress for one week.  A true miracle.  Decided to join and post to forum, since the search for a double sided mattress seems to be a tough one.
